The Book of Ruth

This is the companion discussion to Ruth chapter 4. In these chapter by chapter discussions, Elijah and I will discuss the narrative and theology of the book of Ruth. In this episode, we explore the importance of the other, nameless Kinsman-redeemer unwilling to bear the cost of redemption, the rich blessing of Boaz and Ruth by the elders and people of Bethlehem, the final restoration and filling of Naomi, and the incredible ending of the book of Ruth with a genealogy leading first to King David and ultimately to the King of Kings. In this beautiful finale to the book of Ruth, Boaz wants to marry Ruth and be her kinsman-redeemer. But there is a major roadblock: there is a nearer kinsman who must be given the first opportunity to perform this sacred work. In the epilogue to the narrative, the author of this book telescopes outward to the major significance of these "small happenings" in the little town of Bethlehem. This is the companion discussion to Ruth chapter 3. I am joined in these episodes by Elijah De Jong, recent graduate of Mid-America Reformed Seminary. Elijah has served as a pastoral intern at OPC churches in Joliet, IL, and Concho, AZ. He is currently serving as a yearlong intern at the OPC church in Grant’s Pass, Oregon. In these chapter by chapter discussions, Elijah and I will discuss the narrative and theology of the book of Ruth. In this episode, we explore the Old Testament law of the kinsman-redeemer (its importance in the Ruth narrative and its dark history in Boaz’s ancestry), Naomi’s ambiguous plan to move along God’s providence, and why Ruth asks Boaz to “spread out” his wing over her. After learning of God's providential leading of Ruth to Boaz, a kinsman of Elimilech, Naomi sends Ruth to Boaz's threshing-floor in an attempt to move God's plan along. Ruth pleads for Boaz to "spread [his] wing" over her, and the incredible movement of God's dealing with Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz comes into further focus. This is the companion discussion to Ruth chapter 2. In these chapter by chapter discussions, Elijah and I will discuss the narrative and theology of the book of Ruth. In this episode, we explore the character of Boaz as a man after God’s own heart, God’s providence in the “happenstance” of Ruth’s faithfulness to God’s provision, the Old Testament laws of gleaning, what Boaz sees in Ruth, and how God’s "hesed"--His loving-kindness--bursts forth in this chapter.
