Description
Hosted by Courtney Liso, The Book of the Dead is a true crime podcast that focuses on the victims of lesser-known crimes. Each episode presents a deep dive into a case from around the world, dissecting the details to tell the whole story of who each victim was, in addition to what happened to them. Formerly hosted by a mother-daughter team, the podcast has evolved with one host, taking the care necessary to ensure each victim is honored as they should be. Join Courtney every Wednesday at 12am EST for a new chapter in The Book of the Dead.

On a cold night in March of 1976, a young couple was brutally murdered in an apartment in Chicago. The murders were as violent as they were baffling. Who would want to hurt them, and why? At the same time that police were investigating the scene, Gregg Owen was taking the bar exam and would go on to become a prosecutor. 4 years later, Gregg would take the case, determined to put the man guilty of killing the couple behind bars when no one else would. The case was, seemingly, unwinnable: no evidence, no motive, and the only witness was prepared to take the 5th, but, against all odds, he was prepared to do what no other prosecutor would. Decades later, the story of the Messina/Moore Murders and the trial would be immortalized in the book Convergence-written by Gregg Owen and Jonathan Dixon. They sat down with me today to break down the incredible trial, Gregg's journey from rockstar on stage to performing for a jury, and what it took to bring this story back to life. In Part 2 of my coverage on the McStay Family Murders, I cover the trial of Chase Merritt, the man arrested for the murders of Summer and Joseph McStay, and their two little boys, Gianni and Joey Jr. The case against Chase Merritt was built entirely on circumstantial evidence, and three years after my original coverage, I'm still not entirely sure police got the right guy. From the discourse between the prosecution and defense, cell phone and computer records suggesting Chase Merritt's movements were not as straightforward as the police would have you believe, and PayPal records suggesting another suspect stood to gain from Joseph McStay's death, I went over it all, putting together a picture that suggests that someone, somewhere, may have gotten things wrong. Three years ago, I explored one of California’s most tragic true crime cases: the disappearance and murder of the McStay family, Summer and Joseph McStay, and their two young sons, Gianni and Joey Jr., on February 4, 2010. While there have been no major updates since my last coverage, I’ve gathered additional details about the case and trial that shed new light on the events. In Part 1, I follow the timeline from the days leading up to the McStays’ disappearance to the shocking discovery of their bodies three years later, including the suspects and eventual arrest.Part 2 will dive deeper into the case against the man currently on death row for the family’s murders, examining the evidence and legal proceedings that brought him to justice as well as whether or not I still believe police may have gotten the wrong man.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comFeaturing a promo for And Then They Were Gone:Listen HereAradillas, E. On August 7, 1972, 16-year-old Jeannette DePalma left her home in Springfield, New Jersey, to go to work, but she never made it back home. Six weeks later, Jeannette's body was found atop Devil's Teeth, a cliff in Houdaille Quarry. With very little evidence, no clear suspects, and rumors of her being the victim of a Satanic Cult, her case has gone cold with no answers to be had for any of the countless questions left in the wake of her death. 53 years later, the mystery of what really happened to Jeannette DePalma has continued to baffle those who still remember her. Today, I am joined by Brian Santana to break down the case file and walk you through one of my home state's most baffling crimes. As I work on a case that is far more involved than I originally thought, dive into the chilling legend of Hannah Cranna, often called the Wicked Witch of Monroe in this episode hosted by Raven of Rogue Darkness. Feared throughout 19th-century Connecticut, Hannah’s reputation was built on tales of witchcraft, curses, and paranormal misfortune said to befall anyone who crossed her. Even her death and burial became the stuff of haunted New England folklore, cementing her place in history as one of the region’s most infamous legends. Was Hannah Cranna truly a witch—or just a woman condemned by rumor and superstition? In the 1970s, New York's LGBTQ Community was gripped by fear; from a string of grisly unsolved killings known as the “Bag Murders,” to the shocking murder of film critic Addison Verrill, and whispers of a Hollywood curse surrounding The Exorcist. At the center of these intersecting stories stands Paul Bateson, a man described as handsome and charismatic, yet linked to both cinema lore and real-life violence. In one of New York City's darkest chapters, fact and fiction collided, spawning an evil that was very much rooted in reality. In March 2017, the quiet Alaskan town of Ketchikan was rocked by the sudden death of beloved surgeon Dr. Eric Garcia. Found in his home under suspicious circumstances, his death would devolve into a mystery that was truly stranger than fiction. Journalist Chris Connelly, host of Cold Blooded: Mystery in Alaska, joined me to discuss his investigation and shared what it was like to walk the streets of Ketchikan, speak with Dr. Garcia’s grieving loved ones, and sit face-to-face with the detectives who brought his killer to justice. From Alaska to Washington, Chris told me all about the twists and turns in a case that, on the surface, had seemed so straightforward, and how a remote community still grapples with the loss of one of its own.You can hear all about the murder of Dr. Eric Garcia, including details not shared today, by listening to Cold Blooded: Mystery in Alaska every Tuesday, wherever you get your podcasts.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comIf you enjoyed the episode, consider leaving a review or rating! In August 2005, 20-year-old U.S. Army soldier Joshua Bennett returned home to Illinois, grieving the unexpected loss of his father. Ne reconnects with his mother, who invited him to stay the night at her home, but within hours, Joshua would be murdered in his mother’s home by a group of people who believed they were under the influence of a witch’s curse. The murder of Joshua Bennett is a senseless killing fueled by occult paranoia, the power of influence, and a revenge plot gone horribly wrong. At the center: an alleged hex, a woman obsessed with retribution, and a small-town “coven” convinced that violence was their only way out.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comFeaturing a promo for A Hateful HomicideA Hateful Homicide is a true crime podcast launched on March 31, 2021, by Transgender advocate Mallery Jenna Robinson. Today I sat down with Clara S. Lewis, author of American Infanticide: Sexism, Science, and the Politics of Sympathy, to examine the deeply unsettling and complex case of Emile Weaver, a college student convicted of killing her newborn in 2015. Clara walked me through how the legal system, media, and public perception often fail to grasp the complex realities behind neonaticide and infanticide in America. From the influence of a long history of stigmatizing young mothers that shape how we respond to these tragedies, the systemic forces that leave young women isolated and desperate, we discussed why these cases are far more common and more misunderstood than many realize. This is a conversation about stigma, silence, and the consequences of a justice system ill-equipped to reckon with maternal trauma.Get American Infanticide: Sexism, Science, and the Politics of Sympathy hereConnect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comLearn more about Clara by checking out her Guest Bio at www.botdpod.comIf you enjoyed the episode, consider leaving a review or rating! In the late 1990s, Italy was worried that Satanism was on the rise. There were whispers of cults and worshippers performing dark rituals to appease the devil and citizens were flocking to their churches worried about their immortal souls and the safety of their loved ones. This fear was not completely unfounded. In the outskirts of Milan, in Busto Arsizio, was a heavy metal band that had taken the idea of Satanic worship and twisted it until their desire to appease Satan turned them into killers. The Beasts of Satan terrorized the community from the shadows for years, and at least 3 people were killed in the name of the Devil, until it all came crashing down in 2004. In 1995, 15-year-old Kiplyn Davis disappeared in broad daylight from her high school in Spanish Fork, Utah. Her belongings were abandoned in her locker, and she never made it to her afternoon classes. No one has seen her since. Thirty years later, the mystery of what happened to Kiplyn has endured in a community that refuses to forget her. However, as the years have passed, the ties that have bound family and friends together have begun to come undone, and secrets have started to emerge, which begs the question: how long can someone stay quiet when what they've done starts to come into the light? Anyone who has any information that can lead to the discovery of Kiplyn's remains is asked to call the Spanish Fork police department at (801) 798-5070 or (801) 804-4700. Alternatively, you can call the FBI field office at 801-374-5332.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comFeaturing a promo for Tragedy With A View:What is life without close calls with disaster?Hosted by Kayla, Tragedy with a View is an outdoor lover's podcast for those who love true tales of tragic loss and unbelievable survival involving the wilderness, wildlife and weather. Join CJ from Rainbow Crimes as she tells the story of the Highs Ice Cream Store Murders. On April 11, 1967, in Staunton, Virginia, Sisters-in-law Constance Smootz Hevener and Carolyn Hevener Perry were shot and killed while working at the Highs Ice Cream Store. While a prime suspect was arrested, charged, and tried, he was ultimately acquitted, and the mystery of who killed these young women went unsoled for over 4 decades. Finally, after the case had long gone cold, someone came forward with the answer as to who the killer really was.Find CJ and more information about her podcast hereConnect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.com If you enjoyed the episode, consider leaving a review or rating! Among the legendary singers of the 27 Club who captivated the world with their music and lyrics, is a woman who is not as well known—one whose powerful voice and thought-provoking lyrics set her apart from the men dominating the industry. Mia Zapata and her band, The Gits, were on the verge of becoming a household name in Seattle's grunge and punk rock scene when everything was ripped away one night in July of 1993. Mia Zapata's violent murder shocked Seattle as a whole. As summer drew to a close in September of 1966 in Cincinnati, Ohio, something terrible was happening at 3381 Greenway Avenue amid another killer's reign of terror attacking women. The Bricca family, Jerry, Linda, and their little girl, Debbie, were brutally murdered in their own home as their neighbors gathered in their homes, settling in to watch TV on that rainy evening. Decades later, the mystery of who committed this heinous crime and who was responsible remains unsolved. Today, I am joined by Brian Santana as my cohost as we sit down with the one man who has spent his life investigating this crime. J.T. Townsend walks us through the crime that has had a hold of him since childhood, so much so that he compiled his research into a comprehensive look at the case in his book Summer's Almost Gone. J.T. takes us through it all, from the timeline, the possible motives, and the person who he believes got away with murderJ. T. Townsend is a freelance writer, armchair detective, and lifelong resident of Cincinnati. He is the author of the 2009 regional best-seller Queen City Gothic, and 2014’s Queen City Notorious, and his work has appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Magazine, Word Magazine, Crime Traveler, and Clews. He has presented over 300 programs in the Cincinnati area as part of his True Crime Lecture Series, including Jack the Ripper, Lizzie Borden, and the Lindbergh Kidnapping. He teaches his Cincinnati True Crime Detective class for the University of Cincinnati Communiversity division. In 2018, he was featured on WCPO News, 700WLW Radio, and the Cincinnati Enquirer while promoting his new book Summer’s Almost Gone, a regional bestseller! When 19-year-old Shana Grice reported her stalker to the police, they didn’t just dismiss her—they fined her. Months later, she was found murdered in her bedroom, her throat slashed, and her home set on fire. The man responsible had a documented history of harassment, and Shana had done everything she could to be heard. In this episode, I tell the devastating story of Shana Grice—a young woman who was failed at every turn by the very system meant to protect her. I'll go over the red flags that were ignored, the chilling behavior of her killer, and how one police department’s negligence became a national scandal. This is more than a true crime story. Many guests say being on the show felt like chatting with a friend who truly understands. As a survivor of physical, financial, sexual, and psychological abuse, I know what it’s like to feel silenced, devalued, and lost. Back then, terms like gaslighting, narcissism, and love bombing weren’t common, making it even harder to spot toxic patterns. My mission is to empower others by sharing my journey and helping people recognize the critical difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. listen hereAnderson, S. (2019, April 13). In Today's episode, I am joined by veteran investigative journalist Mark Pinsky to unpack the decades-old mystery of Nancy Morgan, a young VISTA volunteer found brutally murdered in Madison County, North Carolina in 1970. Mark walks me through the corrupt local politics, suppressed leads, and the lingering questions that keep this cold case unsolved more than 50 years later. He also reflects on his storied career in crime reporting, including his explosive jailhouse interview with serial killer Ted Bundy. Today, I sit down with Tess Korth, the whistleblower who exposed rampant abuse and systemic corruption at FCI Dublin, a federal women’s prison in California once dubbed “the rape club” by those who lived and worked within its walls. Tess shares her firsthand experiences working inside a prison where the power dynamics turned predatory and silence was enforced through fear. Throughout her 25-year career, she witnessed not only the abuse of incarcerated women by staff but also the institutional cover-ups that followed. Tess faced retaliation, ostracization, and threats when she decided to speak out, but she didn’t back down. In our conversation, Tess walks us through the moment she knew she had to blow the whistle, the emotional toll of breaking the silence, and the slow grind for justice in a system stacked against transparency.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comFeaturing a promo for Mountain Murders:East coast murders covered by Appalachian folks, Heather & Dylan. hmm. Yes, little kids can be fast but that's not what happened, is it, this child didn't disappear because "little kids can be fast", this child disappeared because she was TAKEN by a predator. I know you didn't mean to make excuses but that sounded a bit victim blamey to me. Children should be safe in their worlds no matter how fast & curious they be and it falls to us adults around them to make sure that they are. My heart goes out to all child victims everywhere xx
