Owen is joined by Jake Nielsen co-owner of Lint, a vintage clothing store in Corvallis, Oregon. To most people the word "trash" means a waste product or something that's reached the end of its usable life. Jake capitalizes on this when he goes dumpster diving. Used clothing is also sourced from estate sales, storage shed clean outs, and an assortment of other ways that Jake calls "picking". Though still very young he's had a wide array of jobs, few of which relate to his English degree that he plans to use to teach. In the meantime, he's become an entrepreneur operating in the fascinating world of the secondhand market. Listen to Jake and Owen go into detail about how this world works, and the philosophy of a non-traditional career.FIND Jakehttps://www.instagram.com/lint/?hl=enhttps://www.depop.com/shop_lint/TIMESTAMPS(0:00) Intro(0:29) What Jake does(7:31) Work life crossover(9:38) Lint's market(14:15) Jake's career(22:16) Meeting his business partner(25:36) How the reselling business operates(29:48) Japanese buyers(36:07) The military clothing market(40:35) Pricing used clothing(45:30) Bleed between work and leisure time(56:38) His career in education(59:21) His future(01:03:54) Jake's advice for a Bossless path(1:14:52) How to find Jake(1:15:25) Wrap up(1:15:46) Outro#bosslesspathpodcast, #podcast, #videopodcast, #bosslesspath, #interview, #selfemployed, #lint, #picker, #jakenielsen, #vintageclothingstore, #corvallis
Owen is joined by Cecilia Mihaylo a freelance Spanish interpreter. A self-described talker and seeker of new things Cecilia loves serving her local Hispanic community with interpreting services. From a young age she found herself interpreting for her mother, and soon after others too. It wasn't until her twenties that she discovered the certification process for interpreting which transformed it into a career. After landing a "secure" job with the state courts and laboring there for a decade Cecilia suddenly discovered that being an employee isn't always as secure as one might think. She was forced to turn to freelancing in the interpreting world because of a layoff, which at the time wasn't celebrated but years later she found to be a preferable situation. Cecilia not only enjoys her job but says she'd do it even if she won the lottery. Now that's passion to serve!

Owen is joined by Nate Barrios, owner and operations Manager of Beaver Town Movers LLC. Nate's entrepreneurial journey begins in high school by buying used clothes and reselling them on eBay. During these teenage years he was first exposed to the moving business too. He briefly worked for his friend’s brother’s moving company and was so inspired by that business model that Nate decided to start his own moving company shortly after. He wasn’t even 18 years old at the time. Not long after graduating a year early from high school, he moved from his hometown of Chicago to Oregon where he concurrently went to Oregon State University while slowly building and operating his moving business. During this conversation, Nate shares his story and helpful advice to others who might be inspired to start their own business.

Owen is joined by Kiko Denzer, a man of many talents and vocations. His gigs have included writing, editing, managing a community newspaper, and building a homestead, as well as his current array of teaching, publishing, building, homesteading, and producing various arts and crafts. A move into a tar paper shack outside of the city during Kiko's mid-adult life opened his eyes to a different approach to life. A way that involved focus on community and having closer ties to the land. During this conversation with Owen, ideas are exchanged about consumerism, the dichotomy of making a living from the creation of art, among other philosophical topics making for an engaging dialogue that's relatable to anyone considering self employment.

Owen is joined by Craig McPherson, owner of CNC Wood Cutters. Job and career hopping aren't always seen as a good thing, something Craig acknowledges in this interview. But this is exactly what Craig has done from starting as a machinist journeyman, to large project management roles, to selling window blinds just to name a few jobs. It's within this diversity and hunger for new challenges and skills that Craig says his strengths lie. Every job and shift gives him new (proverbial) tools. This combined with his networking skills and positive attitude has helped him have a successful career.

Owen is joined by April Hall Cutting, owner of Wild Yeast Bakery, which she runs with her husband Craig. Unlike many other entrepreneurs, April and Craig's path prior to transitioning a hobby into a business was preceded by work in the church. Further unlike many other entrepreneurs the wife and husband team were fast approaching 60 years old when they changed paths. Needless to say, her life experience and circumstances make for an interesting and unique story. One that demonstrates a Bossless path isn't dictated by your age or experience, instead it’s about your mindset and goals.

Owen is joined by Peggy Perdue, a self-employed writer and editor. Summarizing who a person is and what they do in a sentence is often asking the impossible. This is one of the many topics Peggy and Owen have during their conversation when discussing her unconventional career. Working in the broad world of the written word, she's done many things - worked as an editor for a law firm, been a writing coach, and self-publishing a book of her poetry - just to name a few. Peggy's thoughts on not only her own Bossless path, but also life view are both insightful and interesting. Which seems quite fitting for someone who once (also) worked as a journalist.
