Ryan Murphy is a nine-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer, but it hasn't all been podium glory. At this summer's Paris Games, Ryan missed qualifying for the men's 200 meter backstroke by one tenth of a second. And that was after he had just won bronze in the 100 meter. It's these extraordinary swings between triumph and disappointment that Ryan is so brilliant at managing. Through it all, he's learned to roll with the lows just as easily as he celebrates the highs. There are few endeavours that can match the intense 24-7, 365 day per year commitment and pressure of being an Olympian, and in this episode, we get lessons in stress management and keeping things in perspective that anyone can use. From his early years in competitive swimming when he actually vomited from nerves before every race, to his philosophical views on winning and losing, Ryan takes us through a career that’s been built on family and team support, and incredible focus and drive. He also discusses his passion project, opening his St. Johns. Florida location of Goldfish Swim School, and helping to share the joyful and lifesaving skill of swimming. You don’t want to miss this great conversation as we get an Olympic icon's valuable wisdom on performing under pressure, the power of a team, dealing with the unknowns, and yes, managing the expectations. About Ryan MurphyRyan Murphy began breaking records as soon as he started swimming at age 5. Through dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment, Ryan has fulfilled his academic and athletic dreams. While at the University of California, Berkeley, he won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events at the NCAA Championships for four straight years. He holds the American Record in multiple backstroke events. In his Olympic debut in Rio, Ryan won three golds medals, sweeping the backstroke events and helping the U.S. win gold in the 4x100m medley relay, where his backstroke lead-off set a world record. As one of the most dominant swimmers in the world, the 23-year-old swept the backstroke events at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, won six medals (three gold and three silver) at the 2018 Swimming World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and was named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year by USA Swimming. In 2021, he shined in Tokyo winning gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay, silver in the 200-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. A native of Ponte Vedra Beach (Jacksonville), Fla., Murphy is passionate about giving every young child the opportunity to learn how to swim and being a role model for young swimmers. At 33 years old, Tatiana Miller suddenly lost feeling and movement in her legs, and was lying in a hospital bed. “I had four orthopedic surgeons tell me, ‘this is going to be your new normal’, and at that moment, I remember thinking, no, absolutely not. You're wrong”. When it comes to her health, accepting the status quo has never been in the cards for Tatiana. As a teen, she saw multiple doctors to find help for her autoimmune disease and chronic pain. For years, she struggled to find answers, studying holistic medicine and practicing yoga, but her body kept degenerating, until one day, a bad fall left her paralyzed. In this episode, Tatiana shares how her refusal to accept her doctor's prognosis and her journey to recovery inspired her to found RX for Life, a health consulting business that helps bridge the gap between Western healthcare and holistic medicine. At RX 4 Life, Tatiana helps her clients connect with what’s happening in their bodies, the ways that things like mental health and lifestyle could effect that, and how holistic medicine might help. It’s a fascinating discussion where we dive into how we approach healthcare and why it's critical that we rethink it.About Tatiana MillerTatiana Miller started RX 4 Life over a decade ago. Drawing from her experiences with Western healthcare, and her experience in psychology and holistic practices, her services aim to support individuals, especially those with high-stress jobs, those dealing with burnout and anxiety, and those living with chronic illnesses. Her mission is to offer the real prescription for life – not just pills or quick fixes, but proactive steps to foster enduring mental health. With this crucial election right around the corner, everyone at The Breakout agreed it’s a great time to re-share this interview with Maximina Juson, the director of the documentary, One Person, One Vote? This is a beautiful film that examines America’s Electoral College Voting System, and who it really represents. The movie premiered in September on PBS and it's streaming now on the PBS app. Follow @1person1votedoc on IG, FB & TikTok to stay updated. And of course, check out our interview with the amazing Maximina Juson.Summary: “The electoral college is a real pain point for the electorate. They don’t understand it, and they don’t know why we have it in the first place…So that’s why I made this film.” That’s how Maximina Juson explains her motivation for making the extraordinary, and necessary, new documentary, One Person, One Vote? It's a film that takes a closer look at something that lots of Americans rarely question: the electoral college voting system. If you’ve been listening to The Breakout for a while now, you’ll know that we love guests who question long-held systems or beliefs, and Maximina’s film does just that. One Person, One Vote? explores the electoral college’s not-so-equal representation and its racist origins rooted in protecting the power of slave owners. It’s a must-watch for anyone curious about our democracy. This episode originally dropped on Juneteenth, and we're rebroadcasting it right ahead of the 2024 American Elections - both are great moments to examine the realities of the system we use to elect our president. In this episode, Maximina shares the perspective-shifting moments she had while making the documentary, especially her extraordinary experience when she found herself filming at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.About Maximina JusonMaximina Juson is an award-winning filmmaker and founder of HUMovies, a film and video production company in Los Angeles. The day has finally come! Friends…our book is officially launched! Join us on today’s episode as we celebrate the book, vacillate from excitement to nausea, and look back on the incredible guests on The Breakout who inspired it all.One of our amazing guests once said, “all these rules that have been taught to us? They were not bargained for collectively. We did not actually agree to them”. She was actually talking about monogamy, but for us, that sentiment applies universally to every expectation we live by. It’s also a sentiment that serves as the starting point for our book, Whatever the Hell You Want. It’s a book about the unspoken expectations, the “I shoulds” that we live by, and the secret dreams we’ve tried to ignore. But it’s also a guide for seeing those stifling boxes for what they are, pushing back on expectations, making changes and embracing the life you (yes, you) really want. We know a thing or two about transformations and we know they're not easy. So we wanted to write a practical guide to help people make the changes they are aching to make. And in this episode we're looking back on some of the truly remarkable guests that have broken out of boxes, blown our minds, and inspired us to write the book everyone needs so they can break out themselves.About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Episode Summary: Swimming has always been something that the black culture can do. Trust me, I've been to the Olympics. Team Nigeria, Team South Africa. It's a problem in the U.S. And it starts with the culture. We have to stop saying we don't swim. Yes. We. Do. Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer Cullen Jones’ journey into the sport started with a near drowning when he was five-years old. The experience left him terrified of deep water – as soon as he couldn’t touch the floor he would panic. But his mother was adamant that her son learn how to swim and with incredible determination and against a lot of odds, Cullen became one of the fastest in the world. In this episode, Cullen takes us through his journey from being a kid scared to jump into the pool to facing racism at swim meets and going on to break a world record in swimming. He tells us about Brad the instructor who taught him to love swimming and about the time Serena Williams gave him a shout of encouragement before a big race. Cullen also gets candid about the barriers he faced as an African American swimmer, what he is doing now to change the swimming narrative in the Black community, and his mission to ensure underserved communities learn the life-saving skill of swimming. About Cullen Jones:Cullen Jones is a four time Olympic medalist and the first African American to break a world record in swimming. As a member of Team USA, he made history by helping break world records and winning gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in what many say was the most exciting race in Olympic History. Off the pool deck, he is a passionate advocate for water safety. Cullen serves as an ambassador and board member of the USA Swimming Foundation and works with GoldFish Swim School to help make swimming lessons more accessible to underserved communities.Connect with Cullen: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cullenjones41/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cullenjones/?hl=en Team USA: https://www.teamusa.com/profiles/cullen-jonesAbout The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. When Trauma is Everywhere - Episode Summary: “I had people say, ‘you still have your legs, what are you complaining about?’ It was the worst day of my life, and now people are feeling open to tell me that that experience doesn't count”.In 2013, two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon, a short distance from where Manya Chylinski stood, cheering on the runners. Three people were killed that day, and hundreds were wounded, and while Manya had no physical injuries, she was one of countless bystanders who suffered incredible trauma for years afterwards. As an invisible victim of the attack, Manya was offered no support for her PTSD and zero validation of her experience. That's when she realized how pervasive and disregarded trauma really is, so she decided to change that.In this episode, Manya shares her story of that terrifying day and why she left her career to start educating corporate audiences about compassionate, trauma informed leadership. Manya is on a mission to ensure that everyone is seen and supported in the place where we spend most of our waking hours: the workplace. About Manya ChylinskiManya is a keynote speaker and advocate. But it wasn't until her marriage suddenly ended, and her recovery was put to the test, that she decided to build an alternative approach to recovery. Sonia was looking for consistency, and a place that embraced moderation, as well as total abstinence as legitimate goals. So she founded Everblume, an online support community that meets women wherever they are on their sobriety journey.Sonia is also one half of the fantastic podcast, Sisters in Sobriety, which she hosts with her ex-sister-in-law, psychotherapist Kathleen Killen. Kathleen has also struggled with substance abuse, so when Sonia asked her to co-host the show it seemed like a great way to share some tools for change. This episode is a quadruple threat of co-hosts on co-hosts, with these fun, amazing women who never stop teasing each other, even while they're dropping powerful insights on recovery.About Sonia and KathleenKathleen Killen is a registered psychotherapist (qualifying) and certified coach based in Ontario, Canada. “Anger is telling us something. It's often telling us that something isn't right or that a boundary is being violated”. Cara Tuttle is a lawyer, consultant, and educator focused on addressing sexual assault and harassment in higher education, and she wants us to explore our anger as a key tool in assertiveness training. After years of working on a university campus, Cara found that assertiveness was a major struggle for women of all ages, and that has a lot to do with how women have been raised, and how complicated anger can be for women in particular. As Cara explains, “a lot of the women [I work with] have been raised to be well behaved. They've been raised to be pleasant, which delays them in asserting their boundaries.”In this episode, Cara talks about her important book Drowning In Timidity: Women, Politeness, and the Power of Assertive Living, that she wrote to address the questions she heard from women over and over about how to speak up for themselves. Plus, we do a deep dive into anger, assertiveness and boundaries, to explore why anger is a good thing and why it’s so complicated for women; the small things you can do to create big change; and we even talk about the life-changing power of quality sexual education. About Cara TuttleCara Tuttle is a speaker, author, consultant, and activist-minded educator with over twenty years' experience working in higher education. Cara is the author of Drowning in Timidity: Women, Politeness, and the Power of Assertive Living and has contributed chapters to various books and publications, including The Future Female Leader: Preparing Girls and Women to Lead the World, The Female Code: A Woman's Book for Empowerment and Confidence, The Professional Woman: Pivoting to the New Normal, and Raising Daughters:Raising Healthy Children in an Unhealthy World.Connect with CaraFacebook https://www.facebook.com/102113045263870Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/in/caratuttlebellInstagram https://www.instagram.com/carajtuttle Threads https://www.threads.net/@carajtuttle Website: https://caratuttlebell.comwww.drowningintimidity.comDrowning in Timidity on AmazonAbout The ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “One of the jokes I have in coaching is, the surefire way to kill passion is to build a business around it, or marry it”. Monique Allen will tell you that entrepreneurship is it’s own special kind of trauma, and it needs a special kind of business coaching. Monique is a professional gardener who has spent almost four decades in the industry. Over that time, running her own landscaping business she began to see a crucial need amongst her fellow creatives and trade-based entrepreneurs: they had started a business because they loved their work, and then suddenly they became managers and stopped actually doing that work that they loved. So she developed a fascinating coaching method that focuses on the unique struggles of trade-based entrepreneurs.“Nature is a system”, Monique tells us. “It's the living and non-living things in connection with each other, with the overlay of energy and human interaction. This isn't all that much different than how businesses are formed”. In this episode, Monique shares the story behind “Lifescaping”, her coaching method inspired by the elements of all healthy ecosystems. Lifescaping helps business owners push beyond their barriers and thrive as entrepreneurs.About Monique AllenMonique founded The Garden Continuum - a regenerative landscape design/build and fine gardening firm celebrating its 25th year in business. She is the creator of the Life-Scape Method for land development. As the Lifescape Coach, she's interpreted this simple method into a system to teach service-business entrepreneurs how to develop more satisfying ownership experiences. “I was expecting to feel a certain way about the accomplishments. But it wasn't fulfilling, and I couldn't understand why.” Christine Job was a talented law student and the first Black female president of her class. From an early age, her family had expected her to go into law, but despite her achievements she was terribly unsatisfied. Christine’s early professional life was a series of fits and starts. Big opportunities kept leading to dead ends until one day she had a nagging feeling that would not go away. A friend had told Christine about the Camino de Santiago, an intense 800 kilometre pilgrimage across northern Spain. Hundreds of thousands of people walk the Camino each year, all of them seeking clarity. To Christine, it sounded horrible, but feeling lost about what was next, something in her told her to head to Spain. This is our second of two episodes on The Breakout where we look at the transformative power of the Camino de Santiago. On this episode, Christine shares her Camino experience, her winding road to fulfillment and all the hard lessons along the way.About the ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Really fabulous interviews! Subject matter, guests, advice and guidance... all top notch, thank you for the work you both do! I will mention one thing I found jarring amongst all this brilliant listening, the use of the word "Karen". For any women in the world with that name, and to denigrate women generally with a pointed label, seems against the positive force of the show. That aside, I look forward to many more shows to come. I recommended to a young female colleague yesterday.
