Before sports broadcaster Jen Mueller could break into sideline reporting with the Seattle Seahawks, win her Emmy, and score a Super Bowl ring (yep, she’s got one), she had to bust through some significant gender barriers. She pushed past that male-dominated world and into a pretty hostile locker room, and it taught her some things. “You learn how to stand your ground, how to speak up, but more importantly, how to make the most of whatever interaction you actually get with somebody”.After 17 years with the Seahawks, Jen uses what she's learned in the locker room to help people communicate effectively, when every second counts.Today we're hearing Jen's lessons on how to use your time to speak up and break out, even if that box seems indestructible.About JenJen Mueller, founder of Talk Sporty to Me, is a business communication expert with 25 years of experience as a sports broadcaster. An Emmy-award-winning producer, she is currently a sideline radio reporter for the Seattle Seahawks and has worked with the Seattle Mariners. She has also worked for the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and WNBA, and was awarded the Keith Jackson Media Excellence Award in 2022.LinksWebsite: www.talksportytome.comInstagramYouTubeLinkedinAbout The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “The only one that cares about the extra five pounds you put on is you…Everybody in your life…should want to enjoy your presence and your photos.” For many women, having their picture taken is an excruciating experience; it’s something they’d do anything to avoid. That intense self-criticism is something that portrait photographer Elizabeth Snyder wanted to address. So, a few years back, she shifted to a unique speciality. Working primarily with women aged 35 years and up she’s developed a thoughtful, step-by-step process that's about learning to see yourself differently and letting go of shame. The results are extraordinary because the thing that makes Elizabeth, the perfect person to help these women overcome their doubt are the incredible trials and tribulations she's endured on her own path to self-fulfillment. About ElizabethElizabeth is a portraiture artist, confidence expert, and workshop leader passionately committed to helping women feel their best. She has helped hundreds of women feel comfortable in front of the camera. Elizabeth has been exploring photography for the last 33 years, starting with working in her family's darkroom at age eight. Since then, she’s won many awards for her artistry, including the Portrait Masters competitions, the Castellani Art Museum's 20/20 vision: Women Artists in Western New York Exhibition, the Wedding Wire Couples Choice award, and the Top 10 Photographers in Buffalo through Expertise. Join us for a bonus episode this month, as we share Keri and Kelly's appearance on Notes on Resilience, hosted by Manya Chylinski! What if the secret to effective leadership wasn't having all the answers, but rather creating space for genuine human connection? In this enlightening conversation with Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther, co-founders of the Abbracci Group, we explore the transformative power of compassion in the workplace. The dialogue begins with a fundamental truth: people want to feel cared for, regardless of whether they're at home or at work. Despite this simple reality, many managers struggle to show genuine empathy and vulnerability—often because they've been conditioned to maintain professional distance or believe they must always provide immediate solutions to every problem. As Keri points out, it is hard to fully listen as humans, especially in our hyper-connected, distraction-filled world. Yet this skill becomes increasingly crucial in times of uncertainty. Kelly emphasizes that managers needn't have answers to every question; sometimes their most valuable contribution is simply acknowledging, "I don't know what's going on, but as soon as I have information, I'll share it with you."The conversation navigates the delicate balance between compassion and boundaries. Contrary to popular belief, these concepts aren't opposites—in fact, clear expectations and boundaries are themselves compassionate acts. Without them, managers risk becoming ineffective "besties" rather than leaders who can guide their teams through challenges.Perhaps most compelling is the business case for compassion. When employees don't feel cared for, engagement plummets, discretionary effort disappears, and eventually, customer experience suffers. It might not happen right away, Keri warns, but eventually you will lose customers, clients, and revenue.Through personal stories and practical insights, this episode offers a masterclass in human-centered leadership that acknowledges our shared vulnerability while maintaining the structure necessary for organizational success.About Keri and KellyKeri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther are the founders of Abbracci Group, co-authors of “Whatever the Hell You Want," and hosts of The Breakout podcast. I had a budding career as an attorney. I was making more money than I knew how to spend. I was living in the Upper East Side. Everything looked promising. On paper, it seemed like Justin Maffett had achieved the life he'd always wanted, but instead of enjoying it, he felt trapped in a career that was making him miserable. Then in 2020, COVID lockdowns forced Justin into a state of physical and emotional isolation, and that simmering resentment he felt towards his work turned into a mental health crisis - followed by arrests and felony charges - that would upend his entire life.May is Mental Health awareness month, so in this episode we're hearing about Justin's long journey back from the brink, and why when it comes to Mental Health, we need radical transparency.About JustinJustin Maffett is a writer, lawyer, and current graduate student at HEC Paris Business School. Previously, he was a New York City and later Washington, D.C. based corporate lawyer at two premier international law firms where he specialized in financial regulations. Hear from amazing people about how they broke the rules and reshaped their lives for the better. We’ll talk about career, ambition, reinvention, relationships, divorce, dating, sex (and more sex), aging, body image and more in a frank, irreverent way that also manages to be deep as f*ck.https://www.hotterthaneverpod.com/About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “You can't think your way out of a body problem…You have to address what's happening in the body and the brain before you can actually take those steps forward”. Deanna DeBara knows all about feeling “stuck”. And, if you're a human navigating life right now, you probably do too. Being stuck is that odd sense of not wanting to stay where you are, but not being able to – or knowing how to – move forward. It’s something that many of us think about as being an individual feeling, but Deanna wants us to know that it’s actually a foundational human experience. After experiencing stuckness at many points in her life, Deanna learned that being stuck isn't just an emotional state. It actually has physiological connections, and there's much more to it than a lack of motivation. So she decided it was time to start a bigger conversation about what being stuck is actually about. And that's when she launched her fascinating podcast, Season of Stuck. In this episode of The Breakout, Deanna helps us dive into what being stuck really means, and what you can do about itAbout Deanna deBaraDeanna is a writer and the host of Season of Stuck.Connect with DeannaDeanna on LinkedInSeason of Stuck websiteYouTube channelAbout The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “While I was in the hospital…people started sending flowers and the biggest bouquet of flowers was from my work. And that is a metaphor for how my life was going”. The week before she turned 50, Erin Keating ended up in the hospital, and nearly died from COVID. That’s when a lot of things in her life became crystal clear. At the time, Erin was the picture of success – but she was also telling herself a lot of lies. It took a dire illness and a mid-life reckoning to launch a complete life reinvention. And she noticed something along the way. That having it all as a woman is a trap, and there aren't enough places where women can talk about that. Fast forward to today, and Erin has started her own media company that makes content for women over 40. She also hosts Hotter than Ever, a podcast that digs into the unconscious rules those women are confronting...and breaking. Settle in for our Valentines’ Day episode. It’s a love letter to anyone trying to find themselves after a long separation.About Erin KeatingErin Keating is an award-winning television development and production executive. “It's very easy to say Gen Z’s and millennials are demanding, they're needy, but if you really look at the core of what they want, they're basic human needs that we all want.”There's a generational divide in the work place that Madeline Miller wants to change. Madeline is a career coach who focuses specifically on Gen Z and millennial clients, who she says are entering the workforce with an entirely novel set of challenges.Madeline’s clients are in their twenties, and grew up in the age of climate change, sweeping tech innovations, and being educated online during a global pandemic. That all amounts to a brand new kind of instability, so it's no wonder they need a unique type of guidance at work.In this episode, Madeline takes us through those shaky work stories - including her own, in her former life as a very successful but very unsatisfied entertainment lawyer (continuing with our over-representation of guests who were once dissatisfied lawyers…there’s something to explore there!). She shares how she helps her clients find their footing, and explains why it's high time that employers respond to the needs of new generations of workers. Reluctant at first, once she started seeing real improvements, she went all in - and today, Ann’s published two books that map out the hard evidence on the profound impacts these practices can have on our health and well-being. In her books Meditation for the Real World and Science of Yoga, Ann breaks down how these practices can improve nearly every aspect of our health, and how anyone can build them into their day - without a complete lifestyle overhaul. It's January, the time of year when everyone hits the ground running. We're setting goals, building new habits, and pushing to start the year off strong. But all that momentum can come with a price. Stress, burnout, and routines that just don't stick. If you're feeling the pressure, you're not alone. So, in this episode, Ann explains how yoga and meditation helped her overcome her significant health challenges, and how they can help you too. She has dedicated her career to helping people harness the power of mindfulness, movement and the mind-body connection in tiny, manageable steps. No need for incense, chanting, or intense, lengthy, cross-legged sessions. It's the New Year's episode you need. We've got 30-second yoga moves, one-minute meditations, and the small, sustainable habits that can make all the difference.About Ann SwansonAnn Swanson teaches meditation to busy people with busy minds. She is the author of the bestselling book SCIENCE OF YOGA, which has been translated into over 15 languages. Her new book, Meditation for the Real World, illuminates the fascinating science behind meditation with step-by-step practices to help you find peace in everyday life. However, Ann wasn’t a naturally “chill person,” and meditation didn’t come easy to her. Overcoming chronic pain and anxiety led her to India to study yoga, to China to explore tai chi, into the cadaver lab to teach anatomy, to night school to become a licensed massage therapist, and, ultimately, to earn a Master of Science in Yoga Therapy. Ann blends cutting-edge research with ancient wisdom, resulting in realistic techniques you won’t just learn – you’ll love to live by! Ryan Murphy is a nine-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer, but it hasn't all been podium glory. At this summer's Paris Games, Ryan missed qualifying for the men's 200 meter backstroke by one tenth of a second. And that was after he had just won bronze in the 100 meter. It's these extraordinary swings between triumph and disappointment that Ryan is so brilliant at managing. Through it all, he's learned to roll with the lows just as easily as he celebrates the highs. There are few endeavours that can match the intense 24-7, 365 day per year commitment and pressure of being an Olympian, and in this episode, we get lessons in stress management and keeping things in perspective that anyone can use. From his early years in competitive swimming when he actually vomited from nerves before every race, to his philosophical views on winning and losing, Ryan takes us through a career that’s been built on family and team support, and incredible focus and drive. He also discusses his passion project, opening his St. Johns. Florida location of Goldfish Swim School, and helping to share the joyful and lifesaving skill of swimming. You don’t want to miss this great conversation as we get an Olympic icon's valuable wisdom on performing under pressure, the power of a team, dealing with the unknowns, and yes, managing the expectations. About Ryan MurphyRyan Murphy began breaking records as soon as he started swimming at age 5. Through dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment, Ryan has fulfilled his academic and athletic dreams. While at the University of California, Berkeley, he won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events at the NCAA Championships for four straight years. He holds the American Record in multiple backstroke events. In his Olympic debut in Rio, Ryan won three golds medals, sweeping the backstroke events and helping the U.S. win gold in the 4x100m medley relay, where his backstroke lead-off set a world record. As one of the most dominant swimmers in the world, the 23-year-old swept the backstroke events at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, won six medals (three gold and three silver) at the 2018 Swimming World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and was named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year by USA Swimming. In 2021, he shined in Tokyo winning gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay, silver in the 200-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. A native of Ponte Vedra Beach (Jacksonville), Fla., Murphy is passionate about giving every young child the opportunity to learn how to swim and being a role model for young swimmers. At 33 years old, Tatiana Miller suddenly lost feeling and movement in her legs, and was lying in a hospital bed. “I had four orthopedic surgeons tell me, ‘this is going to be your new normal’, and at that moment, I remember thinking, no, absolutely not. You're wrong”. When it comes to her health, accepting the status quo has never been in the cards for Tatiana. As a teen, she saw multiple doctors to find help for her autoimmune disease and chronic pain. For years, she struggled to find answers, studying holistic medicine and practicing yoga, but her body kept degenerating, until one day, a bad fall left her paralyzed. In this episode, Tatiana shares how her refusal to accept her doctor's prognosis and her journey to recovery inspired her to found RX for Life, a health consulting business that helps bridge the gap between Western healthcare and holistic medicine. At RX 4 Life, Tatiana helps her clients connect with what’s happening in their bodies, the ways that things like mental health and lifestyle could effect that, and how holistic medicine might help. It’s a fascinating discussion where we dive into how we approach healthcare and why it's critical that we rethink it.About Tatiana MillerTatiana Miller started RX 4 Life over a decade ago.
