Jobs are gone, but the rent is still due

As March turned into April and the Houston stay-at-home order was extended to the start of May, renters who found themselves suddenly unemployed by the coronavirus outbreak have been left to wonder how they will pay for housing. Landlords have their own concerns: without the expected rent revenue, how will they be able to pay their own bills? Some states — including Texas — have temporarily stopped evictions from going forward in court. But what does that order really mean? Reporter Sarah Smith, who covers housing, homelessness and poverty for the Houston Chronicle, joins host Ferrill Gibbs to discuss the dilemma facing tenants and property owners alike. Editor Steve Riley: Crisis coverage and the virtual newsroom

As Houston Chronicle executive editor Steve Riley said recently in a letter to readers: Quite suddenly, your lives have changed. Your health, or the health of someone you love, could be at risk. Your job seems shakier than just days ago. Your church isn’t having services, your favorite bar has closed, and the gym has locked its doors. And there’s no baseball, no March Madness. At the Houston Chronicle, we feel it, too. So as an introduction to our new daily podcast, host Ferrill Gibbs talks to Riley about the differences between the coronavirus crisis and other recent catastrophes, and about the unique challenge that covering it presents to local newsrooms. Is it time to impeach?

Special Counsel Robert Mueller testified before two congressional committees Wednesday, mostly underlining the conclusions that were present in the 448-page report made public in April: Investigators did not find evidence pointing to conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, but the president could not be exonerated when it came to obstruction of justice. No, America isn’t full. But is the president on to something when he plays to the fears of his most loyal voters. What does the MAGA-kid story tell us about America?

When we look at the videos of the white Catholic high school kids in MAGA hats in the National Mall, we see different things. Cruel hecklers disrespecting a Native American veteran. Innocent victims of a black hate group spewing toxic insults. Pawns of a biased media hellbent on smearing Trump supporters. In the end, what we see comes down to who we are. “How should the Catholic Church address the sex abuse scandal?”

We explore this question with Houston writer Claudia Kolker, who wrote a recent op-ed for the Houston Chronicle about what she saw at the border as a volunteer translator for migrant mothers separated from their children. “What I saw at the border was far worse than I imagined,” Kolker wrote. “Not only because of what these families experienced, but because of what had happened to the American workers guarding them.” Kolker talks to us about the traumatized children she saw and the stories she heard from mothers recounting cruel conditions and guards put in an untenable situation.Support the show: https://offers.houstonchronicle.com/?offerid=125&origin=newsroom&ipid=podcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
