The Art of References - Ep 314

There is in deed an art to references! Writing, reviewing or requesting references is not as simple as it may seem, but when done well and intentionally, they can serve as a useful metric. If you are a student pursuing references for scholarships, graduate school or your first job, this podcast will help you better understand how and who to request a reference from and how to pave the way for references that will bolster your chance at success. Professors and hiring managers, we have plenty for you as well from deciphering the “secret language”, as Andrew coins it, to how to how and who you should be providing references for.TranscriptsFor rough transcripts of this episode go to https://www.archpodnet.com/crmarchpodcast/314Blogs and Resources:Bill White: Succinct ResearchDoug Rocks-MacQueen: Doug’s ArchaeologyChris Webster: DIGTECH LLCAndrew KinkellaKinkella Teaches Archaeology (Youtube)Blog: Kinkella Teaches ArchaeologyArchPodNetAPN Website: https://www.archpodnet.comAPN on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/archpodnetAPN on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/archpodnetAPN on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/archpodnetAPN ShopAffiliatesMotion Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Mitigating Illness and Preventative Health - Ep 313

Mitigating illness as an archaeologist is tricky no matter where you are at in your career. This job takes a toll on you physically and leaves little room for R&R let alone the penalties that come with resting when you are an on call employee. Andrew and the sickly Heather, with her best “Kathleen Turner” voice, consider how to mitigate illness before and during the field and care for yourself regardless of budget. Diversifying Your Geographical Skill Set - Ep 312

Ever wonder how difficult it is to work in other states in the US and if it makes sense to take opportunities in different geographies? This episode explores how to diversify your geographical skill set that will in turn improve your short and long term employment prospects. Each state has their own set of requirements, some are much more stringent than others. However, putting in the time early in your career may be the best time to expand your archaeological-geographical footprint. The Potential Future of Vocational Training and Technical Workforce in CRM - Part 2 - Ep 311

We take the conversation we started last episode regarding vocational training of a technical workforce in CRM a little further. Bill provides an excellent perspective on the current role of the academic world in the CRM profession. How the current projections of future student populations provides both a bleak potential for growing numbers of new archaeologists and the promise for job security. A company I worked for recently (Aztec Engineering Group, Inc.) required me to sign the JHA each morning before work began, they updated the site forms each project, and made sure that work was published each time. That is the first company I have worked for that I was given the opportunity to see the behind the scene process, so I don't know how common this is, but I hope it is.
