It gets raucous and rowdy right from the start of the show, as this week Columbus punk rockers MethMatics invade our studio with music and beer. Crystal Price, Byron Weaver, Joey Yates, Billy Spitfire and Chris Cox brought six tracks from their as yet unreleased album and a bunch of cold brews. Just like punk rock, the show is loud and fast. You will hear stories about the music, the legendary Bernies venue, The Damn Yous, The Stalinists, Joe Viers, Sonic Lounge Studios, Joel Treadway, Cringe.com and so much more. Joey takes us down the rabbit hole with talk of masturbation, fleshlights and an anatomy lesson… of sorts. It gets weird with a twist of fun…
On this special 30-minute edition of the show, we did the show “live” in front of an audience at Ruby Tuesday Live for the Columbus Covers Columbus 2019 festival. Our special guests for this episode is the self-described BBQ Rock Band Courtney From Work. It’s amazing how much ground we cover in half the time of our usual show. The conversation ranged from Four Loko and “ballin’ on a budget” to the origins of their name. We discuss their discography and play their latest single. You’ll even hear what local bands get these guys excited.
This week, After-Death Plan joins us in the studio with four tracks from their brand new album, Psycho Social Sexual. Lesley and Constantine join us for stories behind the music, a few laughs and more. It’s cerebral music that will bore directly into your soul. The album was released on January 15 and is available locally at Lost Weekend Records.
This week, we’re joined in the studio by Jeremy Siegrist, Lynne Siegrist and Jeff Brogan of The Typical Johnsons. They’re a band that cannot be pigeonholed into a tidy little box, as they incorporate many elements into their wonderful sound. Place in a bowl The Drive-By Truckers, Neil Young and Frank Turner. Then sprinkle in some Marshall Tucker Band and you’ll have a glimpse of the vibe they exude. We have a hunch that they’re going to breakout on a national level… They traveled from Minster, OH to share the stories behind their songs, how the band formed and Jeremy is put on the spot to give all the fans a nugget of information they don’t know about the band. It’s a jam-packed, fast-paced show that chugs along at warp speed.
As we get ready to close out 2018 and look ahead to 2019, we welcome Columbus singer-songwriter Matt Monta into the studio. As both a solo artist and member of Matt Monta and The Haymakers, his music channels the best of Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, to name but a few. You’ll hear how he made the decision to quit his day job and pursue music full-time as his chosen career. You’ll get the stories behind the songs and share some laughs along the way.
Once again, it’s that time of the year when we invite Josh Kibbey of Kibbey Context into our studio to share with all of you his list of music that stood above the crowded aural landscape. This year’s list comprises the 2018 edition of the 25 Artist of Kibbmas and touches on many genres from within the musical community that vie for a spot on this annual countdown. 2018 marked the fifth year of the 25 Artist of Kibbmas list, and is the second consecutive year that Josh Kibbey has brought the list to us, to be premiered exclusively on our show. With 25 bands vying for the top spot, the decision on where they each would finally place on the list was a hard one, according to Kibbey. And again, with so much music to play, we had to double the length of the show to bring you the list in its entirety. Yes, my friends, that means you get a jam-packed two hour show filled with a ton of aural pleasures and very little talk. We hope you enjoy the twists and turns as we countdown the list to reach the coveted number one spot.
If nothing else, what makes this week’s show a banger is that we have a DJ join us in the studio for the first time in the history of the podcast. We guarantee that no animals were harmed when the beats started dropping, as audio decomposer and mix/mastering engineer DJ Ginsu stopped by. A 20-year veteran of the local club scene and award-winning DJ, he’s been working overtime between djing and audio engineering for some the best in the region. We talk about how he got his start behind the turntables, his work with local event production company My Best Friend’s Party, partnering with DJ Carma in the group Ghost Gardens and more. You’ll hear music he’s produced himself and songs from artists he’s worked with as an mix/mastering engineer. We also touch on his time spinning the music for Ladie’s 80’s Nights at Skully’s over the years, plus we surprise Ginsu during the show…
We discuss the origins of the band and empower musicians to take control of the music industry. You’ll hear the stories behind the songs and experience much laughter throughout the show. You’ll get the scoop on their progress toward making new music and when you can see them next.
We’re honored to welcome Lou Poster of Drift Mouth into the studio this week for an hour of deep talk, music, stories and more. Combining elements of Rock, Country, Americana and the anger of Punk, the music of Drift Mouth appeals to a wide swath of music fans. Poster writes songs that are as real as the West-by-God-Virginia soil upon which he tread as a young boy. He relates the genesis of the music that were a gift to his father, which would eventually lead to the formation of the band. You’ll hear stories from his West Virginia youth to his eye-opening arrival in Columbus twenty-three years ago. We talk about living in dog years, working at the arguably legendary venue simply known as Bernie’s, his time with Grafton, what makes Drift Mouth work so well and the uphill battle to gain traction aurally. The music is fantastic, as well, with four tracks from their recently released debut full-length album Little Patch Of Sky.
This week, Jeff Tobin of The Jeffs joins us in the studio for a fun-filled show full of music, stories and more… Jeff’s unique take on everyday things that occur within all of our lives take on new meaning with the way that he tells each story through song. He relates the gypsy traveling life that he’s lead, which eventually found him settling in Columbus. We have a bit of a surprise for him, playing a song that has elements of Tom Waits, Charles Bukowski and local band Javelina, too!
Bad craziness is on full display as Lustkill join us in the studio for this week’s show. Joey, Byron and Kurt brought their as-yet unreleased split 7-inch (with Mummula) containing three newly recorded songs that we premiere on the show. You’ll hear the stories behind the songs, musings on the varied sound quality of venues around the city of Columbus, and bear witness to grown men diving headfirst into teenage humor. We do manage to make the case for a comparison to Weezer, too.
Veteran’s Day honors all who have served, in every era and in every role, from keeping the peace to wartime. As we celebrate our heroes, let us not forget those who are struggling. It is our collective duty to ensure no veteran is left behind. On this special edition of the show, you’ll hear music from local bands and musicians, as well as a few select tracks from national acts that we believe fit with this show’s theme.
The positive energy is overflowing on this week’s show, as The Late Crew join us in the studio. Combining elements of R and B, Jazz, Rock and Fusion, their sound strikes a chord that will move your very soul. Gregg Swan, Tia Stewart and David Hampton sit down with us to discuss their debut EP, Just Doing Us, and how multiple members of the band have battled through being diagnosed with cancer with positive energy and their faith. You’ll hear stories of members touring with Gerald Levert and Rick James over the years, among others. And lest we forget, you’ll hear four tracks that showcase the wide range and depth of these musicians.
On this week’s all-new episode of the show, the wild and crazy guys of Columbus Post-Rock outfit Something Else join us for music, stories and cocktails. Aidan Hall (vocals/guitar), Landen Gruszewski (guitar) and Colin McMillen (bass) stopped by the studio in advance of the release of their latest single Purpose, scheduled to drop on Friday, November 2. In between mixing drinks and laughter, the guys talk about where they came from, where they are now, and where they hope to be in the future. You’ll hear the stories of the songs we play on the show and get the 411 on their upcoming EP release party in January at the Big Room Bar in Columbus. The conversation shoots off in myriad directions, of course. Plus, you’ll get an exclusive “First Listen” of their latest single Purpose ahead of its November 2 release.
What happens when you combine a dash of 1950’s rockabilly with a heaping dose of 1970’s punk? Find out on this all-new episode of the show, as The Molars flood our studio with the wonderful sound of punkabilly. Jimmy, John and Mike dropped by to regale us and you with stories of the band, bygone Columbus venues, quite a bit of laughter and, of course… lots of their music. They also lay some old-school knowledge on you.
This week, the show shreds with Post-Hardcore aural goodness when Columbus band A Decade Apart join us in the studio. Josh, Sean, Donnie and Travis invade our space to premiere new tracks from their as-yet unreleased EP Premonitions Part 1 (due to be released on October 19). There is much laughter, especially when the conversation delves into the correlation between ancestry and adult beverages. We also deal with some dark and serious issues in relation to suicide. Plus, Josh regales us with his impression of Macho Man Randy Savage. Their new EP, Premonitions Part 1, available October 19 on their website (physical or digital copies). They next play on October 18 at Skully’s Music Diner and then on October 19 as part of a fundraising event for Hayley’s Angels at Flannagan’s Pub.
What makes kolache so awesome? This week on the show, we get the answer. Doug Sauer, co-owner of Columbus eatery Kolache Republic and bartender at the High Beck Tavern, joins us in the studio. He dishes on the origins of the eatery, how Sean Eden of Luna wound up playing Doug’s Gibson ES 335 guitar, his short stint touring with Aether, and why their Thanksgiving kolache sells out every year. You’ll also hear music from the bands that had a profound effect on him throughout his life and so much more.
Calling themselves The 1984 Draft garners a certain level of curiosity, for sure. Make no mistake, their music is full of rock riffs and cerebral, at the same time.
“Emo” is a terribly misconstrued, and often misused term to incorrectly describe so-called “depressing” music. This week’s guest on the show, Saltlick, are not an “emo” band. Rather, they have a sound that is more accurately described as “lo-fi apathetic rock” in the vein of Ohio’s own Guided By Voices.
On this all-new episode, three-fifths of the Columbus pop-punk merry pranksters We Are The Movies join us in the studio to premiere four new songs from their forthcoming EP “…Or Get Busy Dying.”
