Jeff Hoemann, president of the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Des Moines chapter, joins Bo Bonner to talk about a need many people never think about: children without a bed. Sleep in Heavenly Peace began in 2012 when one man built a bed with leftover wood, offered it on Facebook, and found as many people wanting to help build as families needing beds. Today the nonprofit has more than 420 chapters across the country, and since 2018 the Des Moines chapter has built 4,500 beds for kids in the metro.Jeff first heard about the ministry at a Knights of Columbus meeting, began building beds about two years ago, and stepped up as chapter president last year as he neared retirement. He describes the joy of delivery day, when a child who has been sleeping on the floor gets their very first bed, and explains why better sleep means kids who are more rested, more active, and better prepared for school. Growing up as one of five boys sharing three beds, Jeff says the need hits close to home, and he encourages listeners to find something they're passionate about and get involved. How to help: sign up for a community build (they're designed to be fun, and groups are welcome), donate, or apply for a bed for a child in need through the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Des Moines chapter page. You can also drop off new twin sheets, pillows, and bedding at Integrity Printing, 1923 NW 92nd Ct, Clive. Learn more about the national organization at SHPbeds.org.Heard on the Catholic Morning Show, weekdays at 7 a.m. Central on Iowa Catholic Radio. Brian E. Lau, a convert, Catholic artist, and creator of graphic novels, joins Bo Bonner to talk about Blood of the Baptist, a historical-fiction graphic novel about the life and death of John the Baptist, told through the eyes of a displaced rebel and a tormented soldier who arrests John. The book includes a pull-out poster that tells part of the story and an original soundtrack featuring Reina Özbay, who played Abigail in The Chosen, along with Grammy and Dove Award-winning musicians and Fr. Hyacinth, a priest and drummer respected by elite musicians worldwide.Brian shares how a sermon he heard as a young man first drew him to John the Baptist: the rock-star prophet who humbly said "He must increase, I must decrease," then sat in prison while Jesus worked miracles and ate with sinners. John's story, Brian says, shows us how to hold on to hope in suffering, and his whole purpose was to point others to Christ. He and Bo discuss the contrasts between John and Jesus, from John's birth to elderly parents to the fasting and feasting of the Christian life, and why one of the greatest saints is so often overlooked.Brian also explains his approach to historical fiction: fictional characters with their own story arcs, and invented details that always serve and emphasize what Scripture tells us is true. Catholic Answers senior apologist Jimmy Akin serves as the project's biblical and historical consultant. The Kickstarter isn't a donation: backers pre-order the book and collectible CD, preview music clips and videos, and help fund printing and shipping. Bo Bonner and Deacon Mark Campbell open Tuesday of the Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time, with Mass today at 12:05 p.m. at Holy Family Parish in New Hampton (89.3 FM). Deacon Mark also marks his baptismal anniversary, and today's saint of the day is Saint Lubentius, the priest educated by Saint Martin of Tours and Saint Maximinus of Trier. With Pope Leo XIV undergoing surgery today at Rome's Gemelli Hospital to remove an early-stage growth from his lung, Bo and Deacon Mark offer practical ways to pray for the Holy Father: offer your daily rosary for him (and invite family or coworkers to join), attend an extra daily Mass (find one near you at MassTimes.org), make a small sacrifice or fast, unite your own sufferings with his, and extend that prayer outward by visiting someone who is sick or homebound.Brian E. Lau, creator of Blood of the Baptist, joins Bo to preview his historical-fiction graphic novel on the life and death of John the Baptist, told through the eyes of a displaced rebel and a tormented soldier. The project pairs the book with a story-driven pull-out poster and an original soundtrack featuring Reina Özbay (Abigail in The Chosen), Grammy and Dove Award-winning artists, and priest-drummer Fr. Hyacinth, with Catholic Answers apologist Jimmy Akin serving as biblical and historical consultant. Brian shares why John's humility, suffering, and hope speak to today's world, and how backing the Kickstarter pre-orders the book and helps finish production. Back the project on Kickstarter and learn more at BloodOfTheBaptist.com.Jeff Hoemann, president of the Des Moines chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, shares how a single bed built in 2012 grew into a national movement of more than 420 chapters, and how the Des Moines chapter has built 4,500 beds for local children since 2018. Jeff, who first heard about the ministry at a Knights of Columbus meeting, explains why a good night's sleep matters so much for kids at school and how you can volunteer at a build, donate, or apply for a bed. For Respect Life Month, Mary Wolf of Indianola joins Deacon Mark Campbell to talk about the dignity of every human life, from womb to tomb. A homeschooling mom and choir director, Mary lost two babies to miscarriage, in 2021 and 2023, and shares how deeply that loss hits when it's your own child. She describes how her family keeps their babies part of daily life: praying for their intercession by name at bedtime, keeping ultrasound pictures among family photos, and remembering them at the family prayer table.Mary explains why the culture around pregnancy loss has changed. Women once grieved in silence, and some older parishioners have told her they were told their loss "didn't matter" or had no place to bury their baby. Today, Mary is helping launch a miscarriage support group at her parish.Join the Wave of Light on Thursday, October 15: at 7 p.m. your local time, light a candle for one hour to remember babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss, in the quiet of your home or together with friends and your parish. If you're walking with someone through a loss, Mary recommends the "For Family and Friends" section at Catholic Miscarriage Support. Her advice: don't minimize the loss, say "I'm sorry for your loss," bring a meal, mark the anniversary and due date, and say the baby's name.Heard on the Catholic Morning Show, weekdays at 7 a.m. Central on Iowa Catholic Radio. Fr. Donald Haggerty, a priest of the Archdiocese of New York, spiritual director, and author of books on prayer and the contemplative life, joins Deacon Mark Campbell to discuss Cardinal Robert Sarah's newest book, 2050: Prospects for the Church (Ignatius Press). Fr. Haggerty places it alongside Cardinal Sarah's landmark works God or Nothing, The Power of Silence, and The Day Is Now Far Spent, and explains why he considers the cardinal a brother in spirit to Pope Benedict XVI, both optimistic and realistic about the state of the Church. The title isn't a prediction, he notes, but a nod to the next Jubilee Year.Fr. Haggerty walks through the book's central claim that the Church does not need to be reconstructed but purified and sanctified. Real reform, he says, happens in the soul rather than in committee meetings: a return to the sacredness of the Mass, a sacrificial priesthood, a life rooted in prayer, and the faithful handing on of authentic tradition. He also discusses Cardinal Sarah's emphasis on the Eucharist and the liturgy as the measure of the Church's health, drawing on the cardinal's years as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship.Despite serious concerns about fragmentation and disunity, 2050 is not a book of despair. Fr. Haggerty highlights its closing chapter on Pope Leo XIV, the enduring witness of contemplative life, and why the work of holiness begins with each of us. On the Memorial of Saint Carlo Acutis, he also connects the young saint's witness to his own book The Hour of Testing, on living faithfully and drawing others to Christ in a darker culture.Get 2050: Prospects for the Church from Ignatius Press and Fr. Haggerty's The Hour of Testing from Ignatius Press, or find both on Amazon or at your local Catholic bookstore.Heard on the Catholic Morning Show, weekdays at 7 a.m. Central on Iowa Catholic Radio.
