Don’t avoid your responsibility to make tough decisions. I think some entrepreneurs push decisions off in the name of employee empowerment. Whether that’s fear, indecision, or just a blatant misunderstanding of what employee empowerment is, it’s bad for the business.
Every single time you compromise, or allow others to compromise, the vision, mission, or purpose of your business, you piss on your company flag. Fiercely defend your organizational philosophy and require the same from your team. It’s not against the rules to demand loyalty and buy in.

This topic keeps coming up in my conversations with professionals. I think that today, we are struggling as small business owners trying to figure out the balance between employee satisfaction and enforcing a standard. And unfortunately, I think too often, leaders are shying away from being tough on their employees fearing the employee will quit.
Here’s the thing, you can be tough and have high expectations and standards, without being an a%# hole. In fact, not being tough is the equivalent of not caring about your team member. If you avoid the tough conversations you are not only hurting your business, but you are hurting that employee too.
If an employee continues to fall short, even after you have had serious conversations (not weak attempts at being Mr./Mrs. Nice Guy), then remember, career transitions are not always a bad thing. The emotions wrapped around family and financial responsibilities may cause the employee to think that being terminated is a bad thing, but sometimes, it’s the best thing for them and your company.
Being tough is not bad, in fact, it’s one of the best things you can do as a leader.

It’s become popular to poo poo on corporate profits, especially in politics and academia. Yet, these two groups are the first to expect business to step up and pay more taxes and support their many different causes. Is it really so complicated to understand the only way for a business to keep their people employed, to pay taxes, to fund initiatives; is for the business to make a profit?
The foundation of a business is profitability. Social responsibility, ethics, sustainability; these are all great things and businesses must pay attention to them. However, they are not foundations for which a business should be built. Without profit, the business closes, and those things really don’t matter much.

Proper communicate is so off the scales important, it can’t even be measured. Not just communication with clients and vendors, but just as important, internal communication with your employees and team members.
Too often, we think just because our employees are at work every day, they know everything that’s going on. Unless you have communicated it to them, assume they don’t know. And then, communicate it again and again. Reinforce your message with repetition.
And communicate their performance results. Let them know what they are doing good and acknowledge them very publicly. Also let them know where they are falling short but do that very privately. Communication from leadership is one of the most sought-after staples for employees today.
Build a culture that communicates.

There is a significant difference between sales and services. It takes two very different strategies and thought processes. Sales is a short-term process. Our goal is very simple, turn the prospect into a client. So, our activities and strategies are centered around this transaction.
Once the transaction is complete, we then have to shift gears into service. This is a long-term process. Our goal is retention of the client over time, ensuring they continue using us into the future. So, our activities and strategies are centered around client loyalty, upsell/resell, etc.
In an ideal scenario, these two roles would be filled by different people. It’s very difficult, and generally unsuccessful, to ask a hunter to be a farmer and even harder to ask a farmer to be a hunter. It takes two completely different types of people to be great at these roles.
At the end of the day, you can have the best marketing and advertising, the most beautiful store, and the greatest products or services; however, if you can’t convert prospects into clients, all of those things are a waste. And then you have to be able to retain those clients or, at the very least, turn them into evangelists for your business; or the sale was a waste.
Make this a focus of your business, trust me, you will be glad you did.

A bucket list is fun to dream about, but I think it is crucial for entrepreneurs and professionals. It gives you something to strive for that lies outside of your business goals. If the only goals we every set for ourselves are business related, we are missing out on a very big life laying in front of us.
