Description

When April Balascio was 40 years old, something she’d feared for decades was finally proven true. Her father, Edward Wayne Edwards, really was a murderer. The Clearing is about what came after April called a detective in 2009 to tell him about her suspicions — a call that led to her father’s arrest and eventual conviction on multiple murders — and tracks the emotional journey as she and host Josh Dean dig back into her childhood, unravel the truth of her father’s life, and overturn a viral online narrative that had turned Edward Wayne Edwards into a kind of serial killer caricature. Produced by Pineapple Street Studios in association with Gimlet.

When John Quinney was ten years old, he took the stand to testify against his own father. He had come to believe that his dad Melvin was the murderous leader of a satanic cult. It would be decades before John would learn that his family was just one of many swept up in a panic that gripped America in the 1980s—one in which hundreds of people were accused of taking part in underground satanic cults that sacrificed infants and sexually abused children. By the time the panic had subsided, scores of people were in prison, convicted on little to no evidence—people like John's father. Conviction: American Panic takes you inside one of the darkest and most bizarre chapters of American history. The next episode of Conviction is available right now for free, only on Spotify. https://smarturl.it/conviction-s2e2
It’s 1990. The Berlin Wall just fell. The Soviet Union is on the verge of collapse. And the soundtrack to the revolution is one of the best selling songs of all time, the metal ballad “Wind of Change,” by the Scorpions. Decades later, journalist Patrick Radden Keefe heard a rumor: the song wasn’t written by the Scorpions. It was written by the CIA. This is his journey to find the truth. Wind of Change is an Original Series from Pineapple Street Studios, Crooked Media and Spotify.
From the producers of The Clearing comes a new show about a very different kind of crime. Pineapple Street Studios and BuzzFeed News have teamed up to bring you this five-part series investigating how the most powerful banks in the world can facilitate the worst of humanity – terrorism, human trafficking, the drug trade – all in plain sight of the government. The next episode of Suspicious Activity: Inside the FinCEN Files is available right now wherever you listen to The Clearing.
From The Clearing host Josh Dean comes a new show about one of the most incredible and baffling true crime stories in recent memory. For the past year, Dean, along with National Magazine Award winning journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis, has been unraveling the so-called Hollywood Con Queen scam—which has baited hundreds of Hollywood gig workers into flying to Indonesia for a movie project that doesn't exist. Listen to an extended clip from the show here, and then join them on the hunt for the masterminds behind it by subscribing to Chameleon: Hollywood Con Queen wherever you listen to The Clearing.

Many Presidents come to mind but most of all is Ronald Reagan.

Great podcast overall, the narrators/hosts are good at holding the story and not leaving loose ends or unanswered threads. It was shorter than I was expecting but I enjoyed it. I am not entirely sure how I even came across it!

Music is a universal language. Hardest thing to believe, for me anyhow, is the fact the CIA had done something positive. Maybe that is why it seems so unbelievable.

The "Satanic Panic" of the eighties was frightening... and actual Satanists had nothing to do with it. Check out the population stats in adolescent psychiatric wards during that time. Parents were drinking the kool-aid while these hospitals were cashing in. Not a great time to be a rebellious kid with paranoid parents.

A Satanist? Human Sacrifice is not what satanists, true satanists, are involved in.

I've seen, heard, and experienced a lot of f***ked-up shit and was shaking my head when April said what she did. In no way she should think or feel in anyway that her actions did or didn't have some part in Danny's death. Her father was beyond f***ked-up and when he set out to do something, he made sure it was done, either to plan or not.

I think it is really important to continue to talk about cold cases, so that those victims are never forgotten and the perp can be caught. Never forget

I ABSOLUTELY loved this podcast!!! Listening I kept asking myself why...why did he pick young couples? I am always interested in the psyche of the killers...the why of why they committed these murders. I kept coming back to the thought...EWE was a bastard child, his mom was very young when she was impregnated. Did he see his mom and dad in these young couples? Was he taking out his feeling of rejection and "basterdness", if you will, on these victims? Just a thought!! Anybody else get that?

This is a great podcast. And I know you needed April to help make it. However, her voice is so annoying and whiny. Every time she speaks it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard. Sorry.
