After an extended break, Behind The Goals is back! And we're doing it in style - we've taken the podcast on the road again, this time to Warsaw for a beer festival.
Whilst in Warsaw we did a bit of ground-hopping - taking a tour of the national stadium, drinking beer responsibly in the Legia stadium (where the beer festival was being held), and taking in a Liga III match at the Polonia stadium. Polonia won 2-0 against ŁKS Łomża, and even though we wanted to just sit and watch the game we were forced (literally!) to stand up and join in with the chants and choreography!
The last week or two has also been a bit of a media frenzy, with invitations to appear on radio and TV to talk about the potential reintroduction of alcohol sales in football stadia (a subject we're very familiar with!) and also to respond to the trouble at last week's Edinburgh derby match. Faces for radio? You bet.
As always, get in touch with us via behindthegoals@hotmail.com or on Twitter @SuppDirectScot
The podcast has gone yellow this week for a very special episode of Behind The Goals - or should it be Behind The Home Runs?
Jesse Cole (@YellowTuxJesse), owner of the Savannah Bananas (@TheSavBananas) spoke to us about their unique approach to running a baseball team. Playing in the eighth tier of baseball in the US, the team started from scratch in a city whose previous team folded due to a lack of interest in the sport. By focussing 100% on entertaining the fans (do that, and the results will follow, according to Jesse) they've gone from zero interest to sold-out stadiums, winning their league in the process.
Jesse's enthusiasm is infectious, and his insights into creating the perfect matchday experience are worth considering for any sport. Some of these ideas may not translate easily to Scottish football, but the beer festival idea might be popular ("you can't drink all day unless you start at breakfast time!")
Enjoy!
This week we hear one of the greatest but least-known stories in Scottish football - Jimmy Bone's achievements in Zambia with Power Dynamos FC, the first team from southern Africa to win the Cup Winners Cup - a fascinating conversation that could have gone on for a lot longer!
Enjoy.
Andrew and Alan talk about the SD Scotland Index - an overview of the ownership of Scotland's 42 senior clubs, and of their approach to supporter engagement and transparency.
The index was conceived as an extension of the work Alan did for Raith Supporters Trust to improve their members' understanding of the ownership of their club structure. In this episode we talk about the Raith Rovers story, the development of the SD Scotland Index, and our plans for developing it further.
You can view the Index here: https://tabsoft.co/2H9UsRg
A previous version of the Index, which we initially published as a PowerPoint file, can be found here: https://bit.ly/2uUmBa8
The Raith Supporters Trust's "Who Owns What?" document can be found here: https://tabsoft.co/2qiURGB
A PowerPoint slide deck showing how the Raith Rovers ownership structure evolved over the last 35 years can be found here: https://bit.ly/2H742o0

Andrew spoke to John Alexander and Philip Jones about some of the alternatives to limited companies that you can consider for the incorporation of your club.

@SuppDirectScotland
Hibernian Supporters Limited (http://hiberniansupporters.co.uk/) was formed in partnership with the football club at the beginning of 2015. Its purpose is to widen the ownership of the club by purchasing new shares, which would enable the current holding company’s shareholding in Hibernian to be diluted below 50%.
HSL board member Jim Adie joined us to chat about earlier supporter ownership initiatives as well as sharing progress of the HSL campaign and current priorities. The conversation showed that there are many forms that supporter ownership can take, and HSLs aspirations for the future.

Bryan Jackson is too humble to admit it but he is a huge name in Scottish football. As an administrator for clubs in financial distress he has been involved in saving some of the biggest clubs in Scotland from going out of business.
The Foundation of Hearts have credited him as "the man who saved Hearts", and he had just as significant an input at Motherwell, Dundee, Dunfermline, Clyde and Clydebank - who are now preparing for a return to senior football.
Since his retirement from full-time work, he has taken his interest in football in a new direction - his play "The Pieman Cometh", based on his experiences in Scottish football, opens tonight (Sunday 18th March) at Oran Mor as part of the Glasgow International Comedy Festival. The opening night is sold out, but there are still some tickets available for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening.
Tickets can be purchased from the venue or from See Tickets (https://www.seetickets.com/event/the-pieman-cometh-a-cautionary-football-tale/oran-mor/1178392)
Jim Thomson, Andrew Millar and Elaine Millar of the Killie Trust spoke to us about the "Trust In Killie" campaign, which has already invested £100,000 in Kilmarnock FC.
The sharp-eared amongst us will recognise Elaine as a voice from the past. Elaine was a member of the Supporters Direct Scotland team between 2006 and 2012, and it was great to re-connect with her.
The Killie Trust can be found online at http://killietrust.killiefc.com, where you can pledge to Trust In Killie.

Currently playing their first season in the Lowland League, a crowdfunding campaign will enable Edusport Academy to be turned into a professional club with ambitions to progress up the Scottish football pyramid.

In our chat after the interview with Chris we talked about a few other clubs on the rise, including a great article on The Fitba Nomad about Kelty Hearts. Read that article at thefitbanomad.wordpress.com/2018/02/25/kicking-off-at-kelty/

Andrew Jennings is an investigative reporter, best known for his work investigating corruption in the IOC and FIFA. His 2006 book, "FOUL!" and his series of Panorama documentaries exposed the Sepp Blatter regime and was a big part of its eventual collapse.
Now retired, Andrew was an entertaining guest, and we hope you get as much from our conversation with him as we did.

Graeme and Keith Easton, who are the stadium announcer and DJ at Hampden, as well as at many other sporting events, came in to talk to us about how to improve the matchday experience.
The brothers also produce the "Graeme Easton's Playlist" podcast (https://www.woosh.tv/graemeeastonsplaylist) where they interview the stars and business minds of Scottish Sport to find out what music makes their playlists and to take part in the "See You In The Charts" quiz. We turned the tables and put them head-to-head against each other... find out which one of them won!
Chris Samson blogs as Sports Marketing Scotland, where he interviews people from across the Scottish sports marketing industry. We spoke to him about his recent article on what it would mean for Scottish football to adopt a 'startup mentality' (http://sportsmarketingscotland.co.uk/adopting-startup-mentality/)

Portugal-based writer and Hibs fan Edd Norval (@EddNorval) recently wrote an article for Box To Box Football (and since published in the Football Pink) on what Scottish football could learn from companies such as BrewDog about marketing and identity.
And it looks like the BTG guys will be heading to Lisbon for a weekend of beer and football!
