Everyone is going wild for The Game Changers, but is the doco really bringing about change for animals? Or is it just encouraging people to be more self-centered? How many chickens do we award the film out of 7?Plus get the latest scoop from the coop and find out about the newest member of the boyz only club and the liberation of 20 hens from battery cages. In news we chat about the devastating bush fires currently burning Australian wildlife and how the police continue to let down the animals. On this ep of the podCARst join me and Ben Johnstone as we drive to and from Liverpool Local Court to find out if myself and the other Lakesland activists are being found guilty or not guilty of theft and aggravated trespass. I committed the so-called crime of attempting to rescue starving and dehydrated hens back in June 2018 and after plenty of legal faffing, we have finally reached verdict day. Find out why myself and other rescuers are pleading not guilty despite the fact we were clearly trying to rescue hens and what exactly does the magistrate say when handing down her ruling. In this episode I'm joined by special guest and all around top bloke Ben Johnstone to discuss the ethics of buying animals to save them. When I am confronted with an animal in need my first reaction is to try and help that individual. But if we are paying money back into the animal exploitation business is it really helping animals at all? We also catch up on the latest scoop from the hen rescue coop and celebrate that we have 4 new Hen Heroes (regular donors). Hen Heroes mean so much as they are the ones who help us to plan how many hens we can afford to feed and provide vet care for. This episode comes straight from the NSW Hen Rescue chicken coop and I'm joined by 18 special little co-hosts. As I chat to you about our most recent liberation of 26 battery hens, you can hear their contented little chirps for yourself as they perch on the log next to me and peck at my shoe laces. I chat about their first week of freedom and why liberation is so important. On the show this week we have special guest, David Kelaher, to talk us through our news story and then we chat to animal activist, Ben Johnstone about why and how he liberates animals. Welcome to another action packed episode of The Cluck. This ep I'm lucky enough to be joined by non-stop animal activist Jayson Sim. Jayson is a co-organiser of Sydney Animal Save and Sydney Climate Save as well as a volunteer for the Animal Justice Party and Animal Liberation. If you attend any Sydney animal rights event it's likely you'll see Jayson there, usually as an organiser. I talk to Jayson about why he felt drawn to his work with the Save movement and the power of bearing witness. His recent work with Sydney Climate Save has led him to look more deeply into the environmental devastation caused by animal agriculture and he chats to me about how we can change our path away from climate disaster. As always I'll fill you in on the latest scoop from the coop including an update on the Lakesland Hens court case, our plans to rent land for the rescue and the awesome fundraiser open mic night I attended that raised over $460 for the hen rescue. I realise that the title of this podcast is only very loosely related to the main topic of alternatives to zoos and petting zoos for kids, but...owl well. We have so much news to catch up on it's otterly amazing! So prepare for a koalaty podcast... Okay I'll stop now. For our main topic we are taking a look at kind alternatives to zoos and petting zoos. We want to teach compassion and kindness to kids whilst they spend time with animals but we don't want to give money to people who exploit animals. We also want to avoid teaching children that animals are to be used for entertainment. So what alternatives are there? Have a listen to get more ideas for you and your friends or family. Here's the live sheep cam I mention:https://explore.org/livecams/farm-sanctuary/sheep-barn-farm-sanctuaryWe have some interesting news stories this week too including:Platypus milk? It's been such a busy week at NSW Hen Rescue. I probably could have made a whole episode just from Scoop from the Coop! I'll fill you in on all the new arrivals and what I've been up to.I'll also chat about that news story that the carnist public seemed to think would be the downfall of veganism: Australia's Vegan Lie Revealed. Growing Vegetables Kills Hundreds of Thousands of Animals. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7194701/Australias-vegan-lie-revealed-growing-vegetables-kills-hundreds-thousands-animals.htmlThe anti-animal public and media were truly reaching with this one. Tune in to hear me explain why.Our main topic this week is Speciesism. What is it and how can we as animal rescuers and activists, challenge our own speciesism? Why is it that many people think of 1 dog as worth rescuing, but not 1 chicken?I talk about the strange case of speciesism where an animal rescue serves animal flesh in their rescue cafe:https://www.raystede.org/And we take a look at how we can tell the story's of animals in a way that encourages others to see them a individuals, not as faceless members of a flock. Here are a couple of the accounts I mention that challenge speciesism effectively:https://www.facebook.com/BeckyBroiler/https://www.facebook.com/Melbournechickenrescue/Joanne Lee's post on anti-speciesism:https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw74ZbwANNX/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_linkCards Against Animalilty:http://www.anti-speciesist.com/cards-against-animalityOh and maybe you want to follow me too?Insta: https://www.instagram.com/veganhen/Get the latest scoop from the coop here:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/nsw.hen.rescue/facebook: http://facebook.com/nswhenrescueWeb: http://henrescue.orgYour Kindness Challenge:I challenge you to find me a vegan rescue for fishes. I'd love to speak to someone involved in the rescue of fishes in a future episode. I challenge you to share a post on your social media about the lesser respected species such as squid, octopuses, fishes or crustaceans. These animals are individuals. They have the capacity to feel pain. It's important we do not use and exploit them. And whatever else you do listener, for cluck's sake, be kind to animals.
Grab a vegan hot chocolate, pop on your slippers and settle down on the sofa with a blanket and your foster lambs. This episode I'm chatting about winter lambing. Why is it even a thing when 25% of lambs born during the winter will die of exposure? And what are people doing to help sheep suffering out in the cold this winter. Plus celebrate with me as the clock ticks closer to midnight and (drum roll) my birthday! Yes, I've made it through another whirl around the sun. More importantly it is Maddie's 4th rescue anniversary. She fell off a truck onto the M1 motorway rupturing her inner and middle ear back in 2015 and is currently my highest needs hen in the special needs flock. She's also one of my best friends and I can't wait to tell you about her. I'll fill you in on the latest scoop from the NSW Hen Rescue coop and catch you up on the latest animal rights news. Today I was lucky enough to have a volunteer squad from Sydney Boy's High come and help out at the hen rescue. It inspired me to make this episode where I chat about how volunteering can change the lives of animal and people. I'll tell you my story of how I got started with my first volunteering role (where I unknowingly contributed to a place that exploits animals) and how a later volunteering experience helped me find my life's purpose. I'll also share how volunteers have made all the difference at the hen rescue and how it could change your life too. Here are some of the volunteer abroad opportunities we mention:https://www.soidog.org/content/volunteerhttps://www.volunteerworld.com/en/volunteer-abroad/orangutanI'll give you the latest scoop from the coop including some progress from Rafael our ringneck parrot and we'll dive into some news about a happy rescue story as well as the inconsistencies between sentences given out to dog abusers vs bird abusers. Anger is an emotion that I am over-familiar with. After watching footage of what animals go through, I find my heart pounding, hands shaking and steam coming out of my ears - at least that's what it feels like. Whilst I try to use that outrage to propel me forward in my activism, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by it. In this episode, I share how I am learning to harness my anger with a little help from Roald Dahl's short story - The Magic Finger. (https://amzn.to/2IHl7og).We also get some inspo from Charlene Carruthers, a black, queer, feminist community organiser who spoke about anger and activism here: https://medium.com/anxy-magazine/community-organizer-charlene-carruthers-on-anger-activism-and-how-to-stay-outraged-yet-remain-341d57f0fee2I'll fill you in on the latest scoop from the coop, with Rafael the Indian ringneck's progress and my search for a friend for him. I mention http://petrescue.com.au which is an excellent place to find new rescued friends. In news, we take a look at Senator Bridget Mckenzie's rather odd reaction to the release of new plant based meat, Sunfed chicken free chicken in Coles. The release is covered here: https://www.smartcompany.com.au/startupsmart/news/sunfed-coles-plant-based-meat/ and the tweet in question is here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2395868920434989&set=a.691899377498627&type=3&theaterDon't worry, not all plant based food is that pricey. It's the week of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival where I think vegans and non-vegans alike feel like they are carrying around an extra weight just thinking about the suffering going on. In this episode, I chat to you about what Chinese activists are doing to save dogs and how we can help them. I also take a look at the similarities between what is happening to dogs in China and what humans are doing to animals right here in Australia. We also chat about my vegan adventures in Bondi, the hole left in my life by one of the most beautiful chickens I've ever met and vegans planking their way to world records. My kindness challenges:Sign up for Challenge 22 to try vegan for 22 days:http://challenge22.comand Spend time with your companion animals and do something to make their life better. I'll also fill you in on the scoop from the coop and give you the latest updates on the Bridgewater Poultry expose. To be honest, I wasn't going to publish this episode.
