In the episode we talk about his latest work with Boy Pablo, the Instagram algorithm, Questions from the Listeners and his growth over the last year since we last recorded an episode.
After leaving school and deciding not to go to University, I worked my arse off for a few months working for nothing for a multitude of TV production companies as a glorified dogs body, Literally starting from scratch, learning what I could when I could, in an extremely competitive industry. 6 months down the line, one morning i saw a job for a researcher position with Fflic, a TV production company run by a formidable business woman by the name of Gwenda Griffith. Without thinking too much about the job, or who Gwenda was, I wrote my covering letter, updated my CV and sent it in. Miraculously, I got an interview and I prepared every line, every possible answer and envisaged every possible outcome. BUT, the day of the interview, after a good 20 mins of selling my soul to the interview panel, Gwenda stopped me in my tracks, took her glasses off, slammed the table and told me "Cai, STOP. You're talking to me as if you've worked in this industry for years. Do you think you're acting like a know it all?" I jumped out of my seat and it felt as if time had stood still.. After an awkward 15 or so seconds, i somehow wormed my way out of an awkward situation explaining that I was just desperate to prove a point that I was capable of doing the job advertised, even though I had just turned 18. Gwenda's straight talking, no bullshit approach was quite eye opening as a fresh faced 18 year old, but I learnt so much from that interview and continued to do so for another 3 years, as she took me under her wing and offered me the job. Also known as 'The Big G', Gwenda is a badass business woman and creative that I can now call a friend and I'm so happy we're finally recording this conversation, it's been something I've been keen to do for so long.
It's fair to say that true crime content across the web has exploded over the last 5 years. The dawn of high end Netflix productions such as Making a Murder, The Confession Tapes , and a raft of podcasts such as Serial have wet our appetites for a glimpse into a deep and dark underworld of murder and injustice. Almost like a vice to the law abiding citizen, within the comfort of our own homes, and within the confines of our comparatively stable lives, we learn about some of the most horrific acts a human being can carry out. The genre has taken the world by storm, but as a keen viewer of such content, never did I imagine that I would be so engrossed in a series that was based on a truly tragic event that took place less than a mile from this very studio in Cardiff. This week I'm joined by Ceri Jackson, the producer and writer of Shreds: Murder in the Dock, one of, if not the best podcast I've ever subscribed to. If you haven't listened to Shreds, before you go any further listening to me on this series, please listen to Ceri's jaw dropping 13 part podcast , and come back to listen to this.
The last few months have been a whirlwind of creative experiences for me, from completing my first solo podcast series, starting up my own photography based Youtube channel and continuing my endeavours with my wildly creative video production team in Boom Cymru to produce content for some of the UK’s most successful online video channels. It’s been the busiest and the most exciting part of my career yet. But in that time, there has undoubtedly been one seriously significant opportunity that catapulted me, for at least a weekend, into a group of creative’s that are breaking the mold for online media production across the world. This my experience visiting the busiest creative Crossroad' in the world, New York's 368.
