Want to write a book? The best way to get started is to kick off working your blogging muscle. Truly, be sure not to overlook the power of blogging especially right now at a time when content marketing is Queen. In this episode I discuss my blogging story and how and when I started blogging and how this easily led to writing a book. This episode is brought to you by my blogging planner that helps you discover 15 blog topics in 5 minutes so you can be well on your way to creating over 3 months worth of contact! Download the planner here to get started: http://www.beautifulbloggingplanner.com/
When it comes to writing a book, you can take as long as you like however what usually happens is that most books never get written following this pattern of just an 'open ended' time length. The solution is to institute a few simple things and stick to them and your book will get written. YAY! I like to make things as simple and uncluttered as possible.  These 3 points will help you write your book 1. A Time Frame. You want to set a time frame that feels realistic but at the same time allows for you to get the book written. Common time frames are 3 months, 6 months or 12 months. Think about your business and what important things are coming up, if you want your book released at a certain time to align with an event or program for example you want to make sure it gets written within that time frame. 2. Production Schedule Let’s look at how a simple production schedule works. Let’s say you wrote just 100 words every day for a whole year. That’s about 8 lines at Arial 12 pt single spaced typing. 8 lines! That would give you 36,500 word book manuscript. Let’s say you wrote 3 x 500 words pages a week (1500) this is about ¾ page of 12pt Arial single spaced typing it would take you about 20 weeks to write 30,000 words. Work out what kind of schedule you need to deliver the word count you want. 3. Accountability Accountability is another major thing that stops people from getting projects done. A large proportion of the people who hire coaches and personal trainers do it mainly to keep themselves accountable. They are basically hiring a boss to psychologically and emotionally put themselves in a position where they feel they have to meet their targets - week in, week out. Projects, pitches, books and businesses do stay on track with external accountability in place, work out how you can incorporate this into your plan for your book. 4. Little wins When you have met your word count for a week, reward yourself in some small way. It's really important to acknowledge your work along the way. Who's your host? What is Conscious Reading? Conscious reading as I call it is where we read consciously. You know how when we read we often can’t remember what we just read, or we skim over the words or we read with other people around while we’re eating or with fiction we get really lost in the book. That’s all fine, in fact it’s great but conscious reading is different. Conscious Reading is part of our practice to become better at writing. When you read articles about writing you’ll often see mention that writers need to read. You need to read in the genre you’re writing in, you need to read in genres you’re not writing in, whatever - you need to read. I do agree because when you think about it, reading is the flip side of writing. We read what other people have written so we take it in both consciously and unconsciously. We take in how they’ve done it, whether we like it, whether the writing is boring or confusing or fascinating or moving, we either engage or disengage with the writer’s voice. Conscious reading is where we read without distraction. Here’s how to do it: Set up - Set yourself up for conscious reading by making sure you’re in the right place, you’re physically comfortable. Focus - Take a few long slow breaths or do a very short meditation to calm your mind and remove yourself mentally from your surroundings. Ponder – As you start reading the book, really think about what you’re reading (ponder on what the writer’s saying and what it means to you - do you agree or disagree? how does what they write make you feel) Notes & tabs - Take notes or make notes in the margin and tab certain pages that resonate with you. Journal - Journal during or after reading a chapter to deepen your thoughts and reactions and see what creative ideas come to you that you could add to the concept or story you’re reading about. Reading as a Writer - Reading as a writer is noticing HOW the writer has written the work - what style they’ve used? What structure they’ve used? What’s the level of complexity? where have they used stories? images? how have they got their message across? Conscious reading helps you become a better more adept writer. Who's your host? Boundary setting in our lives and businesses is about the awareness and the development of an understanding of our personal limits to ensure we don't zap our energy or become misaligned in service to others. Boundary setting is a surefire way to ensure we don’t become overwhelmed so that we can keep our energy and integrity and creativity intact. Sometimes we can think setting boundaries might stifle our creativity because a fair amount of it is about saying no to things and requests. This might feel like it’s a retracting approach instead of an expansive approach but it’s the discipline of setting boundaries that actually gives us the energy to be more creative. Mastering the art of boundary setting sees us go from feeling frazzled, split and fragmented to feeling more focused, more clear and more calm which helps us be more creative. We can set boundaries in any area of our lives for example: Business - You can think about setting boundaries around when to work and not work? what types of clients do you serve and not serve? How does your delivery look? Do you over deliver? Relationships - Our love for the people in our lives often tests our boundaries and energy balance the most. Think about your clients, your family and your friends. Where do you need to set boundaries around your relationships with others? A lot of boundary setting is about valuing time and energy and managing these to the best of our ability. We all have the same amount of time so we have to use it wisely and the practice of boundary setting is one of the best ways to make sure this happens.
