Me, MI-self, and I

The boys discuss Motivational Interviewing (MI), which is a client-centered approach, used for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. Oh, and in case you were wondering, it is indeed true that the Human Torch could not get a bank loan...
In their triumphant return to the Podcast universe, Joe and Shawn discuss the influence the media has over the public's view of the criminal justice system.  They discuss the fact that the news media in particular is not focused on the evidence and research when it comes to crime, but instead portrays the world as much more dangerous and crime-ridden than it actually is, based on ratings and profits.
Joe and Shawn discuss the cognitive-behavioral approach to assisting clients with behavior change.  They talk about how virtually everyone that works to help justice-involved individuals is using this approach, from therapists, counselors, and program staff, to Probation Officers and Correctional Officers.  It is truly an evidence-based practice!
Season 2 kicks off with a bang!  Joe and Shawn discuss Desistance Theory, which is much more exciting than it sounds!  As exciting (at least in their opinion), as a rock star running from the law with a car full of drugs!  Enjoy!
As a late Christmas gift, we offer you an episode full of advice for people interested in working in the field of Corrections.  We share our own journeys, and offer our thoughts on some things you can do while to help increase your chances of getting hired.
Please excuse the technical issues with this episode. We inadvertently recorded  not knowing our handheld mics were not plugged in. Thankfully, the boys brilliance was picked up by the PC mic!  Listen as Joe and Shawn discuss the failed American experiment with mass incarceration. Turn it up and enjoy!
R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me. Sorry Aretha, it’s R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-V-I-T-Y, discover what it means to this guy.   Or these guys, as Joe and Shawn tackle the third leg of the RNR triumvirate…the Responsivity Principle. The trilogy concludes as we put a bow on these foundational concepts of correctional treatment. No Ewoks, we promise. But the we mention The Smiths, and later you can enjoy Shawn’s bemusement at Joe’s unwitting outlier reference work their way into this episode. Criminogenic needs won’t stand a chance….
Joebi-Won Kenobi and Shawn Solo party on the desert planet of Tatooine, all the while discussing the Need Principle, and avoiding the Rancor.  The Need Principle helps guide what programming is recommended for a client, based on their individual risk and areas of concern.
Joe-Joe Binks (yes, that's a cheap shot) and Shawn Solo (I wrote the description when Joe wasn't around), take a trip from Alderaan to Hoth.  They forego any real adventuring, instead taking a deep dive into the topic of Risk....

RNR Wrap Up

Enjoy a wrap up of Joe and Shawn's 3rd episode, where Joe possibly blames his daughter for a head injury he sustained in the risky business of podcasting!
Joe and Shawn give an overview of the Risk - Need - Responsivity Principle (henceforth known as R-N-R), including a history of how this evidence-based practice came into existence.  Joe gets injured twice, once with a swift kick to the shin for using a terrible example, and by a piece of falling equipment.  Give a listen, and see if you can find the exact moment he dented his own forehead!
Listen to a wrap-up of Episode 1, and a Preview of Episode 2.  We discuss trilogies, and cursing.  Something for everyone!
Joe and Shawn travel through time on the Criminological Theories ship, launching from Beccaria Bay in the 1700s and landing on the shores of Risk - Need - Responsivity.  They managed to squeeze in the fact that Shawn has never seen an episode of Friends, and Joe jonses for more serotonin...
