My guess is that you’ll see at least a few perfectly edited shots of people you follow — all living perfect lives.If only your life could be like that, right? And herein lies the problem.Instagram and social media, in general, offer a fantastic platform for sharing your message and creating an audience. But there’s a dark side to all this relentless posting.Comparison.Living for the “Likes"”Unfortunately, we now live in a world of constant comparison. We are so obsessed with getting likes, followers, and comments for social validation and gratification that it’s fucking with our minds.Literally.When you get a like on Instagram, your brain releases a little hit of dopamine, just as it does when you use cannabis, alcohol, or most other intoxicating substances. This can become addictive. You never know how many likes you’re going to get on a post and there is something in this unpredictability that makes the process so irresistible.The Highlight Reel of Your LifeWhile you sit there scrolling through your feed and feeling like your life is inadequate, you’re forgetting one really important thing. That glamorous fashion blogger has probably spent the last 30 minutes taking hundreds of photos to get just the right angle, lighting, and framing to make the photo pop.They might have even paid for a photo shoot in a private jet! Yup, that’s a thing now. You can read about it here.When you start comparing your life to those you “follow,” you stop creating the life you want. You get sucked into feeling like your life is inadequate in some way, and the gap between where you are right now and where you “think” you should be, widens. But What About Inspiration? Looking at buff gym freaks will not give you six-pack abs. Liking that smoothie bowl photo will not make you healthier. Seeing the cute, lovey-dovey photos of that photogenic couple will not make your relationship any better.This is not inspiration. It is a distraction.Take a mental snapshot of how much content you consume versus how much you create. If you are spending more time consuming than creating it should be obvious that you’re heading down a slippery slope.How can you decide on the direction you want to go in life if all you’re doing is filling your mind with unrealistic snapshots of other people’s carefully curated lives? This clouds your vision and robs you of your motivation to actually do something meaningful.The Kind of Comparison That MattersComparison can actually be a good thing. When you compare yourself today with the person you were yesterday, you can figure out if you’re trending in the right direction.Have you put a stop to the endless worrying thoughts about failing that class at university or college, or meeting your clients’ lofty expectations on an important project?Are you able to respond with patience when someone slams on their brakes in front of you? This would indicate you’re now better able to take control of your mind and the unconscious behaviou

Music, clubs, and drugs were my passion and I took every opportunity to indulge in these hedonistic pleasures as much as humanly possible. Partying two or three times a week was the norm with the usual session lasting well over 24 hours.It’s hardly shocking to hear that a two-time university dropout turned up-and-coming DJ was living this kind of lifestyle. I had no direction in life and the only thing I was certain of was that I didn’t want to be in a classroom again.I was naive, reckless, and lost. Had I continued down this destructive path, I probably wouldn’t be writing this post right now.In just a few short weeks, I will turn 30 years old. Unlike my 20th birthday, which was fuelled by drugs, alcohol, and deafening electro-house music, this time I will be running off a mountain with some fabric and string above my head. I do this fun thing called paragliding, where I attempt to fly like bird. On this particular occasion, I’ll be cruising around an active volcano called Mount Bromo, on the island of Java in Indonesia. Pretty wild, I know.I’ve changed so much in the last 10 years. Although I’m still the same old Tom, my thoughts, feelings, and actions are dramatically different. I have taken full responsibility for my life and have been able to do and create some rather special things. I’ve built a successful online business and travelled to over 20 countries learning exciting sports like rock climbing, skydiving, freediving, and paragliding.When you look back and consider all the experiences you’ve managed to squeeze in over the last decade of your life, you really can see how far you’ve come. This helps you realize that change takes time. The idea of an overnight success is complete horse shit. The life you’re living right now is a reflection of who you are. And so, to change your life, you must change who you are at a very fundamental level. This process takes years.The obstacle in your path, that devil on your shoulder, is your ego. It doesn’t like change because change is uncomfortable. Your ego wants to keep you in the familiar and known — and it’s not going to go down without a fight. But when you struggle against it and win, a whole new life will open up right before your eyes, and you’ll be laughing at all the silly decisions you used to make.My 20s were a wild ride that I wouldn’t change for the world. Here are 9 important life lessons I learned on the way: 1. Life Is Not All About Partying to ExcessIt doesn’t matter which college or university you go to, everywhere you look there is a strong culture of drinking to excess and partying hard. While most of us pass through this phase and have a lot of fun in the process, it’s important to remind yourself that there is more to life.When you’re staying up past 6 am absolutely off-your-face, you are borrowing precious energy from your future. Sooner or later you’re going to have to repay this debt. We all know the effects of too much alcohol and sleep deprivation, and hopefully, you’ll realize this is not a sustainable way to live. Perhaps you feel as though each day is drifting by like dead leaves tumbling along in the breeze. It’s like your life is stuck on repeat. You get up bleary-eyed and foggy from the drinks you had the night before; you shovel down the same food for breakfast, scroll your social media feeds, compare your boring life to everyone’s exciting highlight reel. And then, leave for a long day of work. You drive the same route to your job every day, hardly conscious of the twists and turns in the road.  You get dragged into the worry-land of your mind as that constant nagging thought bubbles up again: “I’m not happy.” Fed up with the same boring routine, just living for the weekend. You try to cover this up with a fake smile at work, pretending everything is OK.You’re in “clock-watching” mode. Waiting for the magical hour of 5 pm to roll around. You look forward to getting home and pouring that glass of wine or cracking open a beer as you dive headfirst into some new series on Netflix. That warm fuzzy feeling hugs you tightly as the alcohol kick in and drowns the worries rattling around your mind.And so, the cycle continues.If you want to continue living this kind of life, stop reading here. But, if you want to break out of this prison-like existence, please keep reading. The only prerequisite: You must continue with an open mind.Dramatic Change Requires Dramatic ActionThe plan I’m about to share with you is going to require some bold action. It’s going to be scary and uncomfortable. But this is exactly how you develop a strong, resilient character that allows you to face your problems head-on.This plan may not work immediately for everyone. Perhaps you can scale it down and not make such a big commitment all at once. But first, I want to ask you a question.What’s the worst that could happen? You decide to quit your job, buy a one-way ticket to a different country, and start a new adventure in life with no pre-planned path to take.You’ll lose your job.  You can get a new one, right? Do you have some experience and skills that would be valuable to someone else? It may take some time to find a new gig, but the idea is NOT to go back, not to return to the prison.  The whole purpose of this decision is to expand your view of what’s possible, not to create a cushy back-up plan if it doesn’t work out.Your family and friends will think you are crazy and urge you not to make such a “silly” decision.Sure, they have your best interests in mind, but they don’t know what you “really” want. Instead, you do things to impress other people and not for your own enjoyment, constantly feeling like you’re not good enough.You hopelessly cling on to the “good times” from your past and never feel worthy of the successes you have achieved.Life is passing you by every day and you have no creative outlet, hobbies, or meaningful interests to pursue.If you identify with any of the behaviours above, don’t worry. I’m going to share three tips on how to break free from them. How to Start Living AgainWhen the weekend rolls around, I want you to go to a playground where children are running, jumping, and having a great time, and witness what being ALIVE is all about. Children don’t dwell on their worries, fears or doubts. They live in the present moment and do what feels good to them. If that involves screaming gibberish at the top of their lungs for no reason, so be it!You’ll see their curiosity, energy, and excitement, qualities we need to get back in touch with. We need to be more childlike. To try new things and not be afraid to fall down and scrape our knees.Stop for a moment and think back: When was the last time you spoke to a stranger? It’s a little uncomfortable at first, but right there in front of you is another amazing human being with their own unique set of stories and life experiences. Being curious about other people, instead of making snap judgements about someone you know nothing about, is one of the wonders of life.When was the last time you picked up a good book and got lost in the story for hours? Or how about walking into a restaurant you’ve never visited before without looking at the reviews on TripAdvisor? Doing things just because you’re curious about them, for the pure enjoyment of the experience, is what living is all about.3 Steps to Start Living Again1. Start more conversations with strangers I’m sure you are faced with many opportunities every day to interact with new people. On your commute to work, at your favourite spot for lunch, or at the coffee shop.Just say “Hi”, and if a conversation develops, great. If not, don’t judge yourself or the other person — just move on. You’re not going to hit it off with everyone you speak to.2. Try something you’re curious about There must be something you can think of that you’d love to try but have always been too afraid to jump into. Buzz Lightyear, the space-travelling superhero action figure, is convinced that he’s a real space ranger, not just a toy. But when he tries to fly out of the window, he falls and breaks his arm.This sends Buzz into a deep depression. He is really just a toy.But soon enough, Woody, a floppy pull-string cowboy doll and the leader of the toys, convinces him that this is not a problem, and encourages him to try again. The next time Buzz tries to fly, and fails, he calls it “falling with style”.And that is the message right there.How to “Fall With Style”Buzz finally came to terms with the fact that he was just a toy and he learned to “fall with style”.Sometimes you have to take that leap of faith. But gravity is real and it’s going to affect you, no matter what. So, instead of being defeated when you hit the ground, use the experience as an opportunity to learn and grow as you try to fly again.We Are All “Just” ToysWhen you believe, like Buzz, that you’re something you’re not, you have a tendency to overestimate your skills and shoot for the stars, sometimes ignoring reality. Big goals and healthy optimism are essential to success, but self-delusion is certainly not. You must recognise that you are human and failure is always possible.Those who win at life are the ones who remain calm and centred in defeat. They frame failure as a “learning opportunity”, not something that defines who they are.Identifying and focusing on your strengths, while understanding and admitting your weaknesses are the first steps in this direction.To Infinity and BeyondThough we may have our limitations, the truth is we all have a superpower.Do you know what yours is?Steven Kotler, author of The New York Times bestseller “The Rise Of Superman”, has created a method for finding your “sweet spot of life” — that is, your superpower.Here’s what he suggests:Write down a list of 20 things that you love to do and that bring you a feeling of joy.Then, list 15 things that you are curious about.And finally, list 10 problems that you would like to solve or improve. Examine your lists and you should find points where three or more of your curiosities match at least one problem or area you’d like to improve, and at least one thing that you love to do.Then, go deep.Invest as much time and energy as you can into expanding upon these areas and using them as a force of creation in your life. This is your superpower. Use it wisely.And as Buzz would say, “To infinity and beyond!”
