The Daily Practice

The Daily Practice: a devotional tool from Platt Park Church for developing the habit of daily time with God Learning to love God takes practice. Just like exercising a muscle, our hearts are trained to love from the bottom up, through the formation of our habits and practices. Discipleship is about curating our hearts to love God and the things that God loves. Forces of our culture train us to love things other than God all the time, but spiritual practices help us to be attentive and intentional about what my heart really loves and desires. Following Jesus is more a matter of hungering and thirsting than of knowing and believing and it is our habit forming practices that form our desires over time. May this daily practice tune your heart to sing His praise.

Matthew 14:1-12

Matthew 14:1-12   New International Version     John the Baptist Beheaded At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him." Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her." Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet. On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted and had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

Ezekiel 33:21-33

Ezekiel 33:21-33   New International Version     In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, "The city has fallen!" Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the Lord was on me, and he opened my mouth before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent. Then the word of the Lord came to me: "Son of man, the people living in those ruins in the land of Israel are saying, 'Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as our possession.' Therefore say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you eat meat with the blood still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land? You rely on your sword, you do detestable things, and each of you defiles his neighbor's wife. Should you then possess the land?' "Say this to them: 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague. I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate waste because of all the detestable things they have done.' "As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, 'Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.' My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice. "When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them." Read full chapter

Galatians 1:19-2:10

Galatians 1:19-2:10   New International Version     I saw none of the other apostles—only James, the Lord's brother. I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie. Then I went to Syria and Cilicia. I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. They only heard the report: "The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy." And they praised God because of me. Paul Accepted by the Apostles Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain. Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek. This matter arose because some false believers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. As for those who were held in high esteem—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—they added nothing to my message. On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised. For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles. James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

proverbs 25:15-28

proverbs 25:15-28   New International Version     Through patience a ruler can be persuaded,     and a gentle tongue can break a bone. If you find honey, eat just enough—     too much of it, and you will vomit. Seldom set foot in your neighbor's house—     too much of you, and they will hate you. Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow     is one who gives false testimony against a neighbor. Like a broken tooth or a lame foot     is reliance on the unfaithful in a time of trouble. Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day,     or like vinegar poured on a wound,     is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;     if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head,     and the Lord will reward you. Like a north wind that brings unexpected rain     is a sly tongue—which provokes a horrified look. Better to live on a corner of the roof     than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. Like cold water to a weary soul     is good news from a distant land. Like a muddied spring or a polluted well     are the righteous who give way to the wicked. It is not good to eat too much honey,     nor is it honorable to search out matters that are too deep. Like a city whose walls are broken through     is a person who lacks self-control.

1 John 3:19-4:6

1 John 3:19-4:6   New International Version     This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God's commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

Luke 2:1-20

Luke 2:1-20   New International Version     In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven,     and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Luke 1:39-56

Luke 1:39-56   New International Version     At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!" And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful     of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,     for the Mighty One has done great things for me—     holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him,     from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;     he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones     but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things     but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel,     remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever,     just as he promised our ancestors." Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

Luke 1:26-38

Luke 1:26-38   New International Version     In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end." "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail." "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.

Matthew 1:18-25

Matthew 1:18-25   New International Version     This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Luke 1:5-17

Luke 1:5-17   New International Version     In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commands and decrees blamelessly. But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old. Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

Ezekiel 47:1-12

Ezekiel 47:1-12   New International Version     The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side. As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross. He asked me, "Son of man, do you see this?" Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. He said to me, "This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live. Fishermen will stand along the shore; from En Gedi to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets. The fish will be of many kinds—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea. But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt. Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing."

Psalm 119:33-40

Psalm 119:33-40   New International Version     ה He Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees,     that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law     and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands,     for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes     and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things;     preserve my life according to your word. Fulfill your promise to your servant,     so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread,     for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts!     In your righteousness preserve my life.

Galatians 1:1-17

Galatians 1:1-17   New International Version     Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— and all the brothers and sisters with me, To the churches in Galatia: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. No Other Gospel I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God's curse! Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Paul Called by God I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from my mother's womb and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being. I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus.

proverbs 23:19-21, 29-35

Proverbs 23:19-21   New International Version     Saying 16 Listen, my son, and be wise,     and set your heart on the right path: Do not join those who drink too much wine     or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor,     and drowsiness clothes them in rags.   Proverbs 23:29-35   New International Version     Saying 19 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?     Who has strife? Who has complaints?     Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine,     who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red,     when it sparkles in the cup,     when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake     and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights,     and your mind will imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,     lying on top of the rigging. "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt!     They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up     so I can find another drink?"

Psalm 119:25-32   New International Version     ד Daleth I am laid low in the dust;     preserve my life according to your word. I gave an account of my ways and you answered me;     teach me your decrees. Cause me to understand the way of your precepts,     that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds. My soul is weary with sorrow;     strengthen me according to your word. Keep me from deceitful ways;     be gracious to me and teach me your law. I have chosen the way of faithfulness;     I have set my heart on your laws. I hold fast to your statutes, Lord;     do not let me be put to shame. I run in the path of your commands,     for you have broadened my understanding.

Matthew 13:44-52

Matthew 13:44-52   New International Version     The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. The Parable of the Net "Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. "Have you understood all these things?" Jesus asked. "Yes," they replied. He said to them, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old."

1 Timothy 6:6-21

1 Timothy 6:6-21   New International Version     But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. Final Charge to Timothy But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. Grace be with you all.

Proverbs 21:30-22:6

Proverbs 21:30-22:6   New International Version     There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan     that can succeed against the Lord. The horse is made ready for the day of battle,     but victory rests with the Lord. A good name is more desirable than great riches;     to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Rich and poor have this in common:     The Lord is the Maker of them all. The prudent see danger and take refuge,     but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. Humility is the fear of the Lord;     its wages are riches and honor and life. In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls,     but those who would preserve their life stay far from them. Start children off on the way they should go,     and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Psalm 109:16-31

Psalm 109:16-31   New International Version     For he never thought of doing a kindness,     but hounded to death the poor     and the needy and the brokenhearted. He loved to pronounce a curse—     may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing—     may it be far from him. He wore cursing as his garment;     it entered into his body like water,     into his bones like oil. May it be like a cloak wrapped about him,     like a belt tied forever around him. May this be the Lord's payment to my accusers,     to those who speak evil of me. But you, Sovereign Lord,     help me for your name's sake;     out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. For I am poor and needy,     and my heart is wounded within me. I fade away like an evening shadow;     I am shaken off like a locust. My knees give way from fasting;     my body is thin and gaunt. I am an object of scorn to my accusers;     when they see me, they shake their heads. Help me, Lord my God;     save me according to your unfailing love. Let them know that it is your hand,     that you, Lord, have done it. While they curse, may you bless;     may those who attack me be put to shame,     but may your servant rejoice. May my accusers be clothed with disgrace     and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;     in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him. For he stands at the right hand of the needy,     to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

Psalm 109:1-15

Psalm 109:1-15   New International Version     For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. My God, whom I praise,     do not remain silent, for people who are wicked and deceitful     have opened their mouths against me;     they have spoken against me with lying tongues. With words of hatred they surround me;     they attack me without cause. In return for my friendship they accuse me,     but I am a man of prayer. They repay me evil for good,     and hatred for my friendship. Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;     let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty,     and may his prayers condemn him. May his days be few;     may another take his place of leadership. May his children be fatherless     and his wife a widow. May his children be wandering beggars;     may they be driven from their ruined homes. May a creditor seize all he has;     may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor. May no one extend kindness to him     or take pity on his fatherless children. May his descendants be cut off,     their names blotted out from the next generation. May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord;     may the sin of his mother never be blotted out. May their sins always remain before the Lord,     that he may blot out their name from the earth.
