Description

In February of 1964, Marvel Comics began publishing "Daredevil: The Man Without Fear". Almost sixty years later, despite several rebootings and false starts, this publication is a cornerstone of the Marvel Comics Universe. Join self-proclaimed "armchair expert" of the character, Aaron, his comic-book enthusiast friend, Rodney, and their friend, Kyle, who has never read a comic book in his life, as they dissect every single issue of this popular comic magazine's extensive run.

The second part of the Paste Pot Pete . . . we mean . . . uh . . . The Trapster saga is even better than the first! Even Kyle thinks so, even if he’s not impressed by the villain that makes his first appearance in the pages of Daredevil during the issue’s final sequence. Rodney and Aaron are excited by this appearance! He’s the greatest villain in the history of Marvel Comics, yo!They are less enthused, however, by Kyle’s ridiculous opinions on American sit-coms. Seriously. We might lose list...
Issue 35 pulls another villain of yore from the annals of Marvel Comics history. This time, it’s The Trapster!Just like with the previous two issues, Kyle is very disgusted by this villain. He is not disgusted by the character’s design. He’s disgusted by the villain’s weapon– a gun that shoots paste. A word of caution to more sensitive listeners: Kyle has a million words in the English language that he could use to describe The Trapster’s methods, but he elected to use a word that we will not...

The Beetle has kidnapped Daredevil and taken him to The World’s Fair in Montreal to enact a devious plan to unmask Daredevil on live television! It’s a far-more-intelligent plan than we’re used to from Daredevil’s normal gallery of rogues, even if there’s no explanation as to how Mike Murdock (who doesn’t exist) ever got a passport to go to Canada in the first place. There’s some nice art, lots of good action, and a spectacular moment for our boy, Foggy, who, for possibly the first time, doesn’...
Meet The Beetle!Gene and Stan revive a forgotten villain from the annals of Marvel Comics history for this story arc. Our opinions are varied: Aaron loves him. Rodney is indifferent. Kyle wants to puke. That’s a harsh opinion, Kyle! At least, from a guy who doesn’t even pay for his own Marvel Unlimited subscription.

The final issue of the Mr. Hyde/Cobra story arc surprises all of us by actually being pretty damn good. Containing beautiful artwork, a well-executed villain battle, a straightforward narrative, and absolutely no Mike/Matt Murdock shenanigans of any kind, this issue is the first one in the history of the comic to give all three of us faith in the future of the comic.Only 631 more issues to go!
There’s no Thor in this issue, but two of his villains are sticking around. Continuing right where the last issue ended, Daredevil has been left without his radar senses and blinded as a result of a chemical concoction made by Mr. Hyde. What’s a scarlet swashbuckler to do?Enlist Foggy Nelson in a ridiculous attempt to convince his adversary that he is, in fact, not completely blind. That’s what.
Matt Murdock is disguised as Matt Murdock. Matt Murdock is, of course, disguised as Daredevil. Daredevil is disguised as Thor. In a costume so realistic that we’re expected to believe that it could fool the Thunder God himself.Whatever. That’s stupid.

None of us have fully recovered from the brain-numbing stupidity of issue 28, so we’re possibly being harder on issue 29 than it deserves. There’s plenty of nonsense therein, though: Matt contemplating proposing to Karen, Matt contemplating proposing to Karen as Mike, and Matt (or is it Mike?) wearing his sunglasses underneath the Daredevil cowl. You’ll notice that we’ve mentioned Mike quite a bit. That’s right, this issue is ridiculously Mike-centric. Mike Murdock ruins everything.

In issue 28, Matt Murdock is asked to go to Carter University to give a speech on the legal ramifications of an alien invasion. Unlikely, yes, but not nearly as unlikely as an actual alien invasion taking place while it happens. Why the hell is Daredevil fighting aliens? This is the worst issue ever.
Issue 27 features two boring villains! Issue 27 has a guest appearance by Spider-Man! Issue 27 continues the trend of having blatant disregard for the intelligence levels of supporting characters! Issue 27 is so godawful that nobody wants to talk about it, and Aaron has a hard time keeping everyone on track!
We’re back, baby! And we picked a good issue to return with because this one is a doozy! (Editor’s Note: By “doozy”, we mean that there’s a lot of shit to make fun of)Leap-Frog, the lame villain who was introduced in issue 25, is taken to court to face justice. He is rescued by Stilt-Man, who screws everything up and is eventually rescued by Masked Marauder. That’s right, gang! This issue has three ridiculous villains. There’s also a glaring continuity error and the most annoying appearance of...
Issue 25 of Daredevil features two main plot threads. Both of them are dumb.In Plot A, we meet Leap-Frog, the first villain in Daredevil’s rogue’s gallery to be created by master artist Gene Colan. In Plot B, we meet Mike Murdock, a new character so terrible and implausible that he could have only been created by Stan Lee.It should be noted that due to scheduling difficulties we had to record this entire episode by Zoom. It makes for a different sort of episode than fans of the show are used ...
Regular listeners might recall that issues 12 through 14 centered around an unquestionably terrible villain named Parnival Plunder aka The Plunderer. At the end of our discussion for issue 14, Rodney asked Aaron if The Plunderer would be making a return at any time. Aaron looked Rodney dead in his face and said that, to his knowledge, The Plunderer would never make another appearance in Marvel Comics.Well, Aaron lied to Rodney. The Plunderer’s back, baby!Be sure to check out our webpage at htt...

Masked Marauder’s plot to take over leadership of the Maggia sends Daredevil and Gladiator to Italy, where they duke it out in an old movie set fashioned after a Roman coliseum. It’s pretty breathtaking art! There are some plot flaws here, however, that Kyle cannot contend with, and, for the first time in the history of the podcast, he manages to convince Aaron that he’s wrong! But he also insults Jack Kirby.New low, Kyle. New low.Be sure to check out the webpage at http://www.thedevilsarchive....
The only thing more annoying than the idiotic storyline of the last two installments is the fact that Stan and Gene can't even be bothered to give it a proper conclusion. Instead, they slapdash together a pointless ending and thrust us headlong into the midst of the story they interrupted to present the nonsensical garbage they've unsuccessfully passed off as "narrative" for two consecutive issues. That's right! Masked Marauder and Gladiator are back! With them, are Mangler, Dancer, and ...
Gene Colan is back! Unfortunately, so is every James Bond villain ever, all wrapped up in a package that looks suspiciously like Owl.Issue 21 presents us with an opportunity to have a discussion that we haven’t really had before. We were all three in agreement that the previous installment of Daredevil was kind of stupid, but that Gene Colan’s breathtaking artwork elevated the issue and saved it from being total garbage. Well, issue 21 is just as (if not more than) dumb. Why doesn’t the art s...

Issue 20 marks the premiere of comic book legend Gene Colan in the pages of this book. Gene Colan is good. And by “good”, we mean really, really good. Gene Colan is so good, in fact, that Aaron pulls no punches in pronouncing this new artist as his favorite comic book artist of all time. Even Kyle’s impressed, and we all know that says something. What’s not so impressive is the confusion of dropping the story we had in progress at the end of issue 19 for this absolutely bonkers hot mess of a t...

The final issue of John Romita’s run on Daredevil presents us with the opportunity to discuss the answers to many pressing questions: Does Foggy Nelson finally redeem himself for the idiocy of the last several issues? Are Matt and Foggy the same age? Has Daredevil become too quippy and sarcastic? Does the relative lameness of two not-so-great villains eventually balance each other out?All of which leads to Rodney and Aaron explaining the concept of a “No Prize”, a unique fan incentive started...
A new villain!A guest writer! An embarrassing amount of supporting character fat-shaming!Do we really have to discuss issue 18?Join us at http://www.thedevilsarchive.com to see artwork from the issue we discuss in this episode!

Spider-Man is back!Foggy’s a conniving liar!Aaron knows a big word!Same villain. Same story. Same gorgeous art. Issue #17, the sixth installment in John Romita's run doesn't offer much new for us to discuss, but it does make us ponder how much cocaine the editor of The Daily Bugle might be doing to streamline the duties of his job.
