Episode 15 discusses the principles of complexity theory and demonstrates how the U.S. Constitutional system is built upon them. Complexity theory intrinsically recognizes differences in society, the value of local cultures, and the need to engage in free and open speech to reconcile the tensions among interests. Although honesty and integrity are the most important values underpinning the U.S. republic, diversity and inclusion with an ethic of tolerance play crucial roles in a dealing with the differences. Episode 14 identifies a number of prominent voices from different industries and interest groups who all share a common narrative rooted in Civil-Political Rights. While not all recognize or discuss overtly the idea of Civil-Political Rights, their commentaries implicitly reinforce them. By linking these exemplars and others together with a coherent narrative and shared identity of Classical Liberals, it is possible to quickly generate our own affinity group and impact local, state, and national elections even as early as the 2024 election cycle. For more articles, please subscribe to my Substack at: https://newsuffrage.substack.com/
Episode 13 describes how we can quickly align for political effect the classical liberals who self-identify as belonging to different political, ideological, and cultural groups. Called "affinity group social movement," the key is to develop local relationships among groups that share common political objectives despite some diverging interests. Local relationships can overcome the symbolic politics that separate us into political tribes, and a classical liberal umbrella narrative, such as the New Suffrage Movement, can serve as a unifying identity. Moreover, diverse local social movements overtly challenge the deconstructionist narrative while offering a positive vision for the future. This strategy can quickly create a "cascade" of political influence and support the U.S. Constitutional system. Episode 12 explains how U.S. federalism can interrupt the deconstruction of individual, Civil-Political Rights while establishing the basis for a new, unifying social movement for the 21st century. It touches on the concept of a political community, the difference between a democracy and a republic, and the concept of subsidiarity. Each of these ideas is essential for protecting Civil-Political Rights, and each is under attack. It then describes some policies that could be enacted at the federal, state, and local levels to stem the corrosion or deconstruction of our Individual Rights. For related articles and further podcasts, see my Substack at: https://newsuffrage.substack.com/
Episode 11 synthesizes the insights of episodes 1-10 and restates the rationale for a positive, historically inclusive framing of American history that reinforces our U.S. Constitutional system. We have a history of working across identity lines in the pursuit of individual, Civil-Political Rights. A New Suffrage Movement updated for the 21st century can motivate classical liberals across the Left-Right, Liberal-Conservative, Republican-Democrat identity layers to work together. Episode 10 covers tools 4-6 for the Gramscian Marxist deconstruction of society. It completes the two-part series by focusing on the social psychology of the pre-totalitarian processes at play in American politics today. This includes understanding that the linguistic games described in Episode 9 are specifically designed to force Americans into a public lie, which demoralizes the soul, atomizes the public, and creates the environment for social schizophrenia. It concludes with examples of scholars who specifically seek to undermine the U.S. Constitution by including Positive Liberties in it, and who believe that democratic systems - like our constitutional republic - are the problem given global challenges. This episode explains how the left-right, Liberal-Conservative, Democrat-Republican divides can be overcome based on a shared political philosophy. It does so by explaining the differences between the two baskets of human rights: Individual Civil-Political Rights versus Collectivist Economic, Social, Cultural, and Intergenerational Rights.
Dr. Dave Ellis explains his motivation for the podcast. He briefly reviews his research background studying democratization and development after identity conflict, how narratives set societies on a course toward identity conflict, and why it is necessary to create a more compelling narrative to build a better society reflective of all American aspirations.
Dr. Dave Ellis discusses the idea of a New Suffrage Movement focusing on key principles underlying classical liberalism and individual rights.
Dr. Dave Ellis explains how important history is to charting a positive future. History is a battle of narratives, and the expansion of suffrage brought together Americans of all races, sexes, and religions. This one word reinforces American individualism, recaptures lost history that brought Americans together, and illustrates the lies current collectivist social movements tell about America's history.
