Today's Episode Dr. Raj is joined by Todd Keitz of the “Caregiving Insights” podcast to talk with father/daughter duo Alex and John about their joint adventures working together as EMTs in Connecticut.  Today’s Guest Alex is about to finish up her Neuroscience degree at Middlebury College with a minor in Theatre. During her time as a student, Alex took off a semester to work as a medical assistant at a local hospital in Vermont to help alleviate the staffing issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Outside of medicine, Alex performs with an improv comedy troupe and an acapella group on campus and has starred in the occasional short film. We often hear of a child following a parent’s footsteps by going into the family business or going into the same line of work. That being said, it's probably less likely you've heard of a daughter or son becoming an EMT because their dad was an EMT - and following in her dad's footsteps she also became an EMT at the age of 16. John spent his professional career in advertising and marketing in the US and Europe, but always had an interest in medicine and first aid. It wasn't until his kids were in high school that he felt he could take the time to become an EMT. Fortunately, the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Wilton, CT sponsors two EMT classes a year for its residents. John completed the course and became a licensed EMT and NREMT in December of 2016. He went on to volunteer for the next six years including the intense period during the COVID-19 lockdown in the New York area. John also served as Secretary and President of the Wilton Corps of EMTs. Training young EMTs is a central objective to WVAC, and unlike many services, the group accepts EMTs as young as 16 years old. Last year, John and his wife bought a small inn on Cape Cod and had to leave WVAC. He will never forget how much he learned and grew through serving as an EMT including the notable life experience and sharing several shifts on the ambulance with his daughter Alex.  About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Dr. Rudy Tanzi about his work in Alzheimer's Disease research, his acronym SHIELD for evading its progression, and how his background as a musician has intersected with this work.  Today’s Guest Dr. Tanzi is the Vice-Chair of Neurology, Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Co-Director of the Henry and Allison McCance Center for Brain Health, and Co-Director of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also serves as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tanzi received his BS (microbiology) and BA (history) at the University of Rochester in 1980 and his PhD (neurobiology) at Harvard Medical School in 1990. Dr. Tanzi co-discovered the first Alzheimer’s disease (AD) gene, the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene, and the two other early-onset familial AD genes, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2. As leader of the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund Alzheimer’s Genome Project, Dr. Tanzi identified several other AD genes, including CD33, the first AD gene shown to regulate neuroinflammation. He also discovered the Wilson’s disease gene and other neurological disease genes. Dr. Tanzi’s team was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional neural-glial; cell culture organoids of AD, dubbed “Alzheimer’s-in-a-Dish”. This model was the first to recapitulate all three key AD pathological hallmarks in vitro, and first to definitively show that amyloid plaques directly cause neurofibrillary tangles - and also made drug screening for AD faster and more cost-effective. Using this system, Dr. Tanzi has developed several novel therapies for AD including gamma secretase modulators targeting amyloid pathology and AMX0035, which was already successful in a clinical trial of ALS and now seeking FDA approval. Dr. Tanzi also discovered that beta-amyloid plays a functional role in the brain as an anti-microbial peptide, supporting a role for infection in AD pathology. Dr. Tanzi serves as Chair of the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund Research Leadership Group and numerous advisory and editorial boards. He has been named to TIME magazine’s list of TIME100 Most Influential People in the World. Dr. Tanzi is a New York Times bestselling author who has co-authored the books Decoding Darkness, and the bestsellers Super Brain, Super Genes, and The Healing Self with Dr. Deepak Chopra. Dr. Tanzi has hosted several shows on public television, regularly appears on television news programs, and has testified to Congress on both Alzheimer’s disease and brain health. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Valerie Hernandez about her journey into the world of interior design, sourcing vintage home pieces for her company, and how her background as a nurse highlighted how much living spaces impact our well-being.  Today’s Guest Valerie Hernandez is a registered nurse, wife and mom of two toddler boys. She started her career in the healthcare field as that was your dream since the age of 13 and remains a big part of who she is today. Soon after becoming a nurse, she and her husband bought their first home in 2016 and have completely renovated it from top to bottom. As a nurse, she learned firsthand how our exterior spaces directly impact our daily lives and the importance of how the spaces in which we live make us feel. As many can relate during COVID, she and her husband realized their home was missing that cohesive, curated, and timeless feeling. Her love for interior design, and more specifically secondhand vintage decor, became a much-needed creative outlet for her. After a hard day at the hospital, her new hobby of sourcing, researching, and mindfully selecting pieces for her home became a complete transformation of the way she views home style. She decided she wanted to make her passion more than just a hobby, so she started her own business Grounded Home Designs. Grounded Home Designs brings you a refreshing take on mixing old with new. They have interior decorating services to carefully sourced high quality vintage pieces for others to enjoy. “We believe in creating well-balanced spaces that bring Comfort function in a curated space for years to come. Our goal as a company is to reduce waste by rehoming high quality vintage pieces and helping others to find joy in styling their home. We approach our design and sourcing process with mindfulness, and can't wait to see what is to come as this is just the beginning”  Grounded Home Designs Website Instagram  About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Todd Keitz, the creator of My Care Friends, a community of advocates for patients and caregivers. Together, they delve into their own caregiving journeys, shedding light on the significance of advocacy in fostering empathy and enhancing mutual understanding within the healthcare sphere.  Today’s Guest  Todd has been a lifelong social good evangelist! His personal ethos is “Paying It Forward” in a myriad of ways. He has woven community engagement and social impact into his life since he was a teenager volunteering in senior living centers. Over decades, he has created intergenerational programs to build bridges within families and communities, volunteered as a strategist and “hugger” for Special Olympics, developed business curriculum for high schools, taught for Junior Achievement within intercity Philadelphia, and been a group mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Through all of this, Todd became even more driven to translate his personal ethos on a much larger scale within his professional life. In 2012, he co-founded and served as CEO of Stock4Good, to make the process infinitely easier for individuals to donate stock of publicly held companies to 501(c)3 organizations. In 2018, he relocated to Florida to become caregiver and patient advocate for his mom and dad – each with life threatening diseases. During those experiences, Todd saw first-hand the many challenges all caregivers and patient advocates face. That led him to create My Care Friends, a unique web app for caregivers and patient advocates to connect and support each other. Additionally, Todd is Founder/CEO of 17 Commerce, which represents products at the crossroads of healthcare and technology. In addition to his role with AACY, he currently serves on the board of Say Ah! – a health literacy nonprofit changing the way people think about their health and healthcare, and the way the healthcare system interacts with the people who need it. Todd earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
