Description

In Season 2 we look at a world just as shady and mysterious as MLMs, but one whose promises are at times even more bombastic and unfathomable: WELLNESS. What is it? Who sells it? And will it bring you eternal happiness…and, perhaps, eternal life?

Coming Soon...The Dream

2018-09-0600:02:414

We’ve all got that friend or cousin who steadily hawks some overpriced miracle drink, leggings, or shampoo on social media. They aren’t just trying to sell you something, but would like to offer you the opportunity of a lifetime to achieve riches while working from home on your own terms. You’ve probably been too afraid, or too loving, or too reasonable to confront them. Not us. This season on The Dream we go inside the world of multi-level marketing to expose this pyramid-shaped business model for what it is. Join us on this bizarre journey filled with snake oil salesmen, shifty millionaires, struggling single moms, and a few sweet grandmas.
What happened when LulaRoe tried to save their business by operating less like an MLM? Exactly what you think if you’ve been listening long enough. Although this time, there are people in power that are mad, like file-a-lawsuit mad.    This is 1 of 4 bonus episodes we’re releasing as additional reporting from season 1.
The unbelievable origin story of LulaRoe.   This is 2 of 4 bonus episodes we’re releasing as additional reporting from season 1.
BONUS 3: Dream Stealers

BONUS 3: Dream Stealers

2019-10-0700:21:1310

There’s no better way to build a loyal downline than with a magnetic atmosphere and a magnetic leader. Creating devotion to the cause is one technique that keeps the recruits flowing and the pipeline growing.     This is 3 of 4 bonus episodes we’re releasing as additional reporting from season 1.
Leaving an MLM can be the hardest part of the business.    This is 4 of 4 bonus episodes we’re releasing as additional reporting from season 1.
Oils, crystals, juices and more have been said to bring us eternal happiness and health- but how much of that is based in truth? Who benefits and loses from the wellness industry as a whole? We’ll be talking to some familiar voices and new ones about broader questions like these in Season 2 of the Dream- premiering December 9th.

Love this podcast, but at least times the story stopped, skipped ahead to a different. point. Bad editing!

The first season of the Dream was very good. I find this season completely intolerable. It is so bad that it makes me start to dislike the first season just because it is the same host. This season is barely about mlms, follows absolutely no plot, there is no new information, no organization, the host is rude and judgemental, and the content is completely unbearable. I will be unsubscribing and never listen to another podcast by her again.

Native deodorant ad (about "natural deodorant") right after making fun of Dan's cristals is a little ridiculous.

the answer is no, because they don't have to back up their claims. companies that produce vitamins and supplements can claim that their product can make you fart rainbows and the FDA can't do anything about it.

I judged Dan in this episode. I bet we would be friends but crystals is not a topic we would be able to doscuss

I remember my kindergarten teacher's name but not her face. I don't think it's that unusual to not remember too much from that age. I don't trust people who claim total recall from childhood. I'm sorry for your pain.

Maybe its my own background of education in science, but i think this ep couldve profited of defining "wellness". While for example cbd does benefit ppl with migraines, gatekeeping them does not. And lotting veganism in with tarot reading is highly inaccurate as the first actually DOES something for one's body and the future Ann-Marie is thinking so fatally of. Espesh having children, not being aware that there is a) vegan fastfood and b) its proven to help combatting climate change etc is simply negligent. Also gatekeeping talk therapy ("i actually need it") is quite a smack in the face of other ppl suffering from mental illness, bcs who is to decide who doesnt. Plus frankly, we've come along quite a bit from a dismissive attitude towards those doing talk therapy like it was some sort of self indulgent hobby. Theres a lot of classism and ableism and other isms surrounding those "wellness" examples given and its a missed opportunity that it hasnt been spotlighted. Maybe i am snarky bcs i was such an advertiser for season 1 i feel tricked by this season so far, but tgey need to step it up..

Missed opportunity to understand what people find appealing by listening to Dan. Laughing in his face is unproductive and mean.

I was looking forward to this season, I loved the first one, but if every episode is just long stories about people's medical history with no actual journalism or historical context, I'll be disappointed. I imagine this episode is prep for later ones, but it was hard to get through.

She knowingly ripped people off and then called one of her victims a "whiney complainy loser".... unbelievable. the woman's completely disconnected; must have been some brain-eating bacteria in that money she was rolling around in.
