We’ve all got that friend or cousin who steadily hawks some overpriced miracle drink, leggings, or shampoo on social media. They aren’t just trying to sell you something, but would like to offer you the opportunity of a lifetime to achieve riches while working from home on your own terms. You’ve probably been too afraid, or too loving, or too reasonable to confront them. Not us. This season on The Dream we go inside the world of multi-level marketing to expose this pyramid-shaped business model for what it is. Join us on this bizarre journey filled with snake oil salesmen, shifty millionaires, struggling single moms, and a few sweet grandmas. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What happened when LulaRoe tried to save their business by operating less like an MLM? Exactly what you think if you’ve been listening long enough. Oils, crystals, juices and more have been said to bring us eternal happiness and health- but how much of that is based in truth? Who benefits and loses from the wellness industry as a whole? We’ll be talking to some familiar voices and new ones about broader questions like these in Season 2 of the Dream- premiering December 9th.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Opportunity might still be knocking… we’ll be back with new episodes in January. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Verified: Dust Up is a new investigative documentary podcast produced by Witness Docs that poses the question: Could a product so many of us have in our medicine cabinets be putting us at risk? In the second season of Verified, Host Natasha Del Toro and the Verified team investigate whether a group of women developed ovarian cancer from dusting their bodies with Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder—an iconic brand associated with innocence and comfort since the 1800s. One woman's mysterious illness snowballs into thousands of court cases; a trusted brand fights to convince consumers and regulators that baby powder is safe while minimizing the work of the scientists who claim it is not. As an ICU nurse, listening to this entire episode and having to hear passages from that book made my eyes roll back so far into my head I think I detached my retinas. And I KNOW fellow nurses who sell Young Living and DoTerra. 🤦‍♀️

This was an awesome episode! Listening to you describe growing up around your family members participating in various MLMs really hit home for my sister and I as we grew up. Our Mom and Grandma both did Avon, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, the Tupperware crap, and the jewelry parties. Neither of them participate anymore and I hadn't thought much about it til listening to your podcast. I plan on getting the low down from my Mom next time we talk... I've never heard the details. I came across your podcast from an online news article listing the top podcasts of 2020... I then proceeded to spend the day "binge listening" to the entire season 😬 It's great that you guys are shedding light on these shady companies and unscrupulous "business" tactics--love your podcast!

"Eventually there will be a peasant in Bangladesh who can't come up with the money and then the game would die." This woman sounds fucking disgusting.

I too was not impressed with the woman who was "at the top" and how she took a class on how people spent their money?

Season 1 was great, however season 2 does not particularly focus on MLM businesses; the episode about birth really had no relevance, apart from the vague discussion of "complimentary treatments". I enjoyed the episode about vitamins and dietary supplements despite you not relating this back to MLM companies, as it was still informative.

Disagree about the adrenal fatigue being false. Both of my endocrinologists diagnosed me with a hormonal deficiency and they said as a side effect of it, that I have adrenal fatigue. They didn’t prescribe anything for it, but did for my overall hormonal issues.

Funny how Jane’s reporting of claims for Holiday Magic says “anyone who fails at Holiday Magic is lazy, stupid, greedy or dead.” But in season 2 the amount of times she tried to profile people who like alternative health was a lot. She was constantly saying how desperate they were 🧐

To be fair, mindset work is a key part in almost all areas on entrepreneurship and it has been really helpful for me while growing my business, gaining confidence and overcoming self doubt.

So what this is all telling me is that being so skeptical isn’t really helping you because you miss out on the power of the mind with your placebo response. Also maybe we should stop relying on so many things outside ourselves, whether medication or wellness modalities and start learning our own natural power of healing.

I’ve been told not to touch receipts from my doctor. At my local health food store all the workers wear one glove and use that for receipts.

It doesn’t seem like journalism to say “I THINK people who go the natural route in fighting cancer are much more likely to die.” You think? Don’t make a claim unless you know. My dad died of cancer while using chemotherapy and since I’ve done my own research. I have a lot of friends who have fought and won their battle with cancer with a change of diet.
