Description

Money. Romance. Tragedy. Deception. The story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world's youngest self-made female billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye? How did the woman once heralded as "the next Steve Jobs" find herself facing criminal charges -- to which she pleaded not guilty -- and up to 20 years in jail? How did her technology, meant to revolutionize healthcare, potentially put millions of patients at risk? And how did so many smart people get it so wrong along the way? ABC News chief business, technology and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, along with producers Taylor Dunn and Victoria Thompson, take listeners on a journey that includes a three-year-long investigation. You'll hear exclusive interviews with former employees, investors, and patients, and for the first-time, the never-before-aired deposition testimony of Elizabeth Holmes, and those at the center of this story.

Elizabeth becomes a celebrity as Theranos breaks out of stealth mode and onto the main stage. The media can't get enough, and neither can many investors as Theranos Wellness Centers start popping up at Walgreens. To take advantage of the moment, Elizabeth spends millions on advertising, recruiting the same agency as Apple and even an Oscar-winning director. But real patients are now getting Theranos tests, and for some the results are shocking.Support this podcast with a review: http://bit.ly/2REHEs9====================Recommended listening:-- No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis: Rebecca speaks to bold and influential women about their paths to success, their choices and tradeoffs along the way, and their pitfalls and lessons learned. On the premiere episode of The Dropout, you'll meet a young Elizabeth Holmes. Convinced of her own destiny even as a young child, she would come to drop out of Stanford in her late teens, intending to mold herself after the great tech icons of our time. Her obsession with Steve Jobs -- down to his signature black turtlenecks -- would become particularly pronounced as she launched her company Theranos.Support this podcast with a review: http://bit.ly/2REHEs9====================Recommended listening:-- No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis: Rebecca speaks to bold and influential women about their paths to success, their choices and tradeoffs along the way, and their pitfalls and lessons learned. Incredible Similarity

August 5, 2019 in case you're not aware, Elizabeth Holmes got married to some 27 year old wealthy male. He is an heir to a very successful hotel management family group. There, is an unfounded rumor that perhaps she could use his family money for her legal defense in the upcoming trial. Are you familiar with the expression a high-maintenance wife? Haha Just Google. "Elizabeth Holmes got married. What we know about 27 year old husband Billy Evans Business Insider." the article makes for a very interesting reading, to say the least. PEACE!

I think it is funny how "innocent" are all the employees. they are all against her behavior/action/moral now that the company is over but I don't think they were all full of morality when they were being well paid....

When Elizabeth Holmes' friend described her as always coming in last in races, but with a spirit of "never give up!" and then hearing at the end of the series that EH might be working on a new medical startup - I couldn't help but think of the Dr. Death podcast about Christopher Duntsch. That was how he was described by his young friends - that he had an almost absurd quality of not accepting defeat (like pathological). That was a heartbreaking story indeed. I don't know if they will find the evidence to support fraud in this case, but I genuinely hope she serves prison time. She seems to have no capacity to understand the ramifications of her actions. She needs a big wake up call.

Graeme Tucker Oooh, very interesting parallel! here's a thought: do you think Theranos was ahead of it's time? look at how many companies now advertise similar things (e.g., everlywell)? will we soon find out they are bogus too?

I am studying this in my Master's of raied course as an example of bad ethics but also as an example of a unicorn of a company that raised so much capital in the first few years - scary and concerning. Also can't help wondering if it will change how people view the term Blonde Ambition - she had tunnel vision that her company and product would succeed.

Great series. Can't wait for the next one. Amazing the arrogance she demonstrates throughout the chain of events. She had to realize that at some point the whole thing could be exposed.

Fascinating story, really well told, brilliant podcast. Totally gripping. And an interesting insight into silicon valley culture/mind set. Also interesting how some felt particularly disappointed that Elizabeth Holmes was a WOMAN who behaved this way. Why so? Are women to be held to a different standard to men? Are they not allowed to also be narcissists, bullies, manipulators, fraudsters like anyone else? It seems that part of the problem was how people sooooo wanted a WOMAN to be A successful entrepreneur and leader, particularly a young one, that it blinded them to the reality of what she was doing. Just being female was enough to give people what they wanted, they focused so much in the shiny surface of things, they didn't see the lack of content behind it.

So many people have had their credibility destroyed just by being associated with this horrible person. It would be hilarious if not for the consequences of Holmes' lie.

The casual greed, superficial ethics, and eagerness to join a tech billionaire personality cult displayed by virtually every interviewee is profoundly disturbing. Everyone involved wanted so badly to be attached to wealth that they willingly blinded themselves to the unending parade of red flags. Holmes could not have produced this level of fraud without an ocean of enablers.

I love the idea of George Schultz's hubris being identified by his grandson Tyler. Just shows how eager people were to believe the chimera, the cloud. The smoke and the mirrors. I'm thrilled that Rupert lost so much. I guess though that that signals an increase in his over-priced Foxtel. Well told. Brilliant interface with Elizabeth's voice saying 'I don't know'.
