In this episode, Gary continues his look at charging solutions for those with no off-street parking. In episode 199 last season we looked at public charging solutions. In this episode, we'll look at solutions that allow you to use your own electricity supply but pipe it out to a car on the road.Guest Details:Ben Macdonald : Ben has been an environmentalist and educator throughout his career. He cofounded an environmental group in Aotearoa/New Zealand in 1997 that led to the cessation of logging of lowland temperate rainforest by a State Owned Enterprise. He then went into education to help shape the attitudes of future leaders teaching in SE London schools for 20 years. He began his foray into the world of EV infrastructure when he made his first cable gantry in 2016 in a futile attempt to charge an EV whilst parked on street. In 2021 he founded Nodum with Kohen Judd to help make EV charging more accessible to more people. Nodum has two products coming to market in 2024 and 2025. In this episode of EV Musings, Gary discusses the idea that households with off-street parking and two cars should consider making one of them electric. The conversation explores the case of households with two fossil fuel cars, addresses cost and range concerns, highlights the availability of small-sized EVs, and discusses the benefits of owning an EV. He also emphasizes the role of education and test drives in overcoming ignorance and misinformation about electric vehicles.TakeawaysHouseholds with off-street parking and two cars should consider making one of them electric.Cost and range concerns can be addressed, especially with the availability of affordable second-hand EVs and a wide range of small-sized EVs.Hybrids can be seen as a compromise, but if the goal is to go electric, it's better to choose a full electric vehicle.Owning an EV opens up opportunities for low-priced EV charging tariffs and other benefits.Education and test drives play a crucial role in changing perceptions and increasing EV uptake. If you have 2 cars and off-street parking one of them could be an EV. In Episode 198 Gary looks at the problem of misinformation in the EV and renewables world. We know there’s always been issues of people spreading bad information about EVs (The first episode of this podcast was called ‘Myths and Legends’, after all). But recently it seems that the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) surrounding EVs has stepped up a notch. We talk with Quentin Willson and Claire Cullen from Stop Burning Stuff about this issue.Within our EV bubble it's often easy to forget that what people gear on social media (and even mainstream media) can influence them a lot more than we imagine. With newspapers printing anti-EV marticles daily how can we combat this?Guest Details: With over two decades of experience in strategic marketing across the energy, digital, and not-for-profit sectors, Claire has a wealth of expertise in campaign development and communications.
