Inside the Colosseum: A quiz on Rome's most famous icon

How well do you know the Colosseum?   Probably not as well as Francesco, a Roman guide for Liv Tours, who says the Colosseum is his office. He took me inside the Colosseum... sorry, I mean the Flavian Amphitheatre... and tested me on some basic knowledge.    Did emperors really do the thumbs up/thumbs down? Did they fill it with water? Were there ever female gladiators?   In this on-the-go episode, Francesco takes my family around the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Cryptoporticus of Nero while we answer his trivia questions.   If you are interested in taking the same tour, it's easy to book on the LivTours website through this link: Private Colosseum Tour: Last Entry Colosseum, Arena Access & Rooftop Aperitif | Private Tour - LivTours  (https://livtours.info/earfulcolo)     Mentioned in the episode: Colosseum/Flavian Amphitheatre Roman Forum (ancient cultural, commercial, and religious center of the city)  Palatine Hill (Beverly Hills of Ancient Rome) Colossus (former statue near the Colosseum) Cryptoporticus of Nero (ruins of palace of Nero on Palatine Hill) Wooden sword (ancient symbolic gift from emperor to gladiator granting freedom)   This season of The Earful Everywhere is proudly brought to you by LivTours, who made it possible for us to share these travel stories with you. Alone in the Vatican and Sistine Chapel

Join me on an exclusive walk through the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel when it was closed to the public.    My guide, Michela Landolfi from LivTours, shares her knowledge from over 10,000 visits and brings us through the beautiful rooms that were formerly the residence of the Popes.   We get to see the brilliant frescoes of Raphael and Michelangelo up close, without anyone else around, the surprising beauty of the Gallery of Maps, ancient artifacts and objects, and I end up in the Sistine Chapel, awestruck and lost for words.    Book the same tour I did from the LivTours website through this link: Alone in the Vatican: https://livtours.info/earfulalone.   Mentioned in the episode: Trevi Fountain  Trastevere Neighborhood Sistine Chapel Raphael’s Rooms (rooms in the Vatican with famous frescoes by Rapheal) Private Papal Apartments/Vatican Museums (museums that are former residences of the pope) Geography Room/ Gallery of Maps (fresco gallery with maps painted on the walls) The New Pope (Michela’s favorite show about the Vatican) Saint Peter’s Basilica This season of The Earful Everywhere is proudly brought to you by LivTours, who made it possible for us to share these travel stories with you. How to eat like a Roman: Talking food in Testaccio

When should you never drink cappuccino? How can you tell if the gelato will be bad? And how long should you wait before biting into a supplì? In fact... what is a supplì? It's time to talk food in Rome.  For this episode, local resident and LivTours Guide Manager Davide Falasca took me around the dynamic Testaccio neighbourhood to talk history, Italian culture, and especially food. Grab yourself un caffè at the bar and have a listen! This season of The Earful Everywhere is proudly brought to you by LivTours, who made it possible for us to share these travel stories with you. How to spend the perfect day in Rome

Imagine you're going to Rome - your first ever trip. But oh no: You're only there for one day! A layover, even. How should you spend that one day?   I sat down to discuss it with two experts - Angelo Carotenuto and Kristin Karstensdotter - the husband and wife duo behind the tour company LivTours.    They shared two very contrasting itineries of the city –  one that recommends a full three hours in the Vatican, while the other includes gelatos with a local named Gunther.   Which sounds best to you?    In case you need help tracking down some of their tips, here's everything they mentioned.   From Kristin, in order of appearance: Il Sorpasso (Restaurant) Gelateria Cremilla (Gelato) Gianicolo (neighborhood with great views) San Luigi dei Francesi (Church) Basilica Parrocchiale Santa Maria del Popolo (Church) Église Sant'Andrea della Valle (Church) Terrazza Borromini (Bar) Grand Hotel de La Minerve Colosseum Giulio passami l'olio (restaurant for classic dishes) From Angelo, in order: Adriano Celentano (Italian Singer) Saint Peter’s Basilica Borgo (Neighborhood) Via del Pellegrino (street for coffee) Pantheon Campo de Fiore (market square) Punto (Gunther’s Gelato) Largo di Torre Argentina (historical location) Capitoline Hill Mamertine Prison Imperial Forums Monti (neighbourhood) Tre Scalini (restaurant) The Trevi Fountain Del Palaro (restaurant) The music for this episode was Dean Martin’s “That’s Amore”. Has the English language taken over Stockholm?

It seems to me like English has taken over Stockholm.  You can't escape it. Shops, cafes, and English words that are creeping into the local lingo. What's going on? I met with James Savage, the CEO and founder of The Local Europe, to chat more about the topic.  We met at a cafe/bakery called Stinas Bageri, in Vasastan, to get to the bottom of it.  Find James on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/SavLocal Follow The Earful Sweden on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/theearfulsweden And don't hesitate to leave a podcast review and to tell your friends :)
