Leaving the bustling city of Birmingham to the quiet aisle of Lewes to study Dental Therapy at the University of the Highlands and Islands was just the start of a 7-year journey for this week’s guest. Jyoti Sumel qualified in 2016 and has since achieved a vast amount in her short career so far. After working in primary care, she moved into community care to utilise full scope of practice and provide support and care to more vulnerable patients. She is amongst the first DCPs to participate in HEEs Clinical Fellowship Scheme. Watch out for this dental therapy leader!

James works between NHS Trusts who run the North Thames Regional Cleft Lip and Palate service, creating dental appliances. James is well published in the field and has been a part of the Orthodontic Technicians Association throughout his career. He has recently been awarded for an Outstanding contribution to the Field of Orthodontic Technology.
This week Josh and Julia chat with Dr Debbie Reed. Debbie, who started off in the Royal Navy, discusses the educational journey that helped her develop her career as a dental nurse. She is now a Reader at the University of Kent, has researched and contributed to many publications, and in 2021 received the Janet Goodwin Dental Care Professional Award from the Royal College of Surgeons Faculty of General Dental Practice. This week on The Eastman Dental Podcast, Communications Director for Dentaid The Dental Charity, Jill Harding, joins us. Jill shares the inspirational starting story of the charity from providing dental equipment to Ukrainian prisons to delivering entire dental practices in a wheelie bin to dentists in the remotest areas! Dentaid The Dental Charity provide aid to refurbish dental practices and provide equipment for dentists across the globe. They have recently rebranded and expanded, and provide dental aid to populations across the UK via mobile practices.
This week, we bring you the inspiring career journey of Sarah Maher. Sarah fell into dentistry at 15, completing her work experience at a practice where her next-door neighbour worked. She nursed for the dentist for the whole week which led to a job offer 2 years later when she completed college. After trying her hand at all aspects of dental treatments, Sarah went from chair side to running an urgent care centre. She then landed the role of Service Lead, managing the entire service for 6 months prior to the start of the pandemic. Now as Director of Operations for a small group of orthodontic practices, Sarah works to develop software, aligners, and educational opportunities such as Orthodontic Therapy apprenticeships.
For Episode 3 of The Eastman Dental Podcast, Simone Ruzario discusses her career journey from studying Chemistry to Dental Therapy. After completing her degree in Medical Microbiology, Simone completed her dental training at Barts. Since then, she has completed her post graduate training and gained a Master of Public Health - MPH from The University of Manchester. Simone shares her experience working in the voluntary sector and her inspirational outreach work across the globe.
Starting in a small family dental practice before being thrust into a bustling London teaching hospital, Jennifer picked up post qualifications in OHE, impression taking and implant nursing. She briefly left dentistry and headed into facial aesthetics, adding dermatology and cannulation to her arsenal of skills. However, she soon realised her true passion lay in dentistry, which she now discusses with Julia and Josh.
To kick off Series 4 of The Eastman Dental Podcast, we are joined by the Editor-in-Chief of the British Dental Journal, Stephen Hancocks. He is a dentist, writer and editor, and also owns his own publishing business. Stephen discusses his successful and varied dental career starting out as a teenager dental nursing to working as a dentist whilst writing for the BBC, and being appointed OBE in 1997 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to the dental profession. This is an episode you won't want to miss!
