Please help #BringZakBack by clicking https://gofund.me/292c52c4 Alexandria Saleem is a first-generation Palestinian American from Gaza, whose family was displaced in 1948 and 1967. She joins PalCast co-hosts Yousef Aljamal, Helena Cobban and Tony Groves to talk about Gaza and how the genocide in Gaza resulted in the killing of many of her cousins, but also helped her forge ties with family that enabled her to better organize and advocate on their behalf in the US. Alexandria highlights the importance of working with allies and not compromising on discourse and the need for an immediate, effective and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. She calls for more engagement with Palestinians inside and outside Palestine at this critical juncture in Palestinian history in order for Palestinians to reclaim their voice and tell their personal stories. The brilliant Shamim Malekmian joined us to talk about the "tent city" in Dublin. It's out now here:https://www.patreon.com/posts/patron-exclusive-101051238
Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack The government’s new planning bill has been called anti-democratic, regressive and dystopian. And that was by its supporters. We now know, following the work of the Ditch, that there are real worries about who is driving this policy. Joining us to discuss the many flaws is solicitor Fred Logue. He’s worried that in seeking to fix a problem that doesn’t exist this Bill will cause more litigation, longer planning delays and slow down housing delivery. Doomed before it begins? Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack We sat down for a chat about the week gone by with the best poll analyst around Mr irishelectionprojections.com Harry McEvansoneya We talk the standing of both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael following the resignation of Leo Varadkar, the differences of election strategies that are emerging from the coalition and the cult of civility rallying around a Taoiseach who never lived up to the hype. We also talk the horrible scenes in Moscow and some of the worst views-papers takes we've ever seen. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack Is a bad deal better than no deal? Should we settle for fix it as we go? Would a shift further right in the European Parliament (EP) wreck any hope we have for meaningful climate and biodiversity action? Lifelong environmentalist, author and ecologist, Padraic Fogarty and MEP Luke Ming Flanagan, agree on a lot. But not on the Nature Restoration Laws that passed narrowly in the EP. They joined us to discuss there differences of opinion and where they'd both like to see the conversation and implementation move towards. The clock is ticking and we need these debates now in order to move forward together. Thanks, lads. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced that he's leaving. The tributes are pouring out across the airwaves and opinion pages. This podcast will not be among them. We look at how he has tried (and succeeded?) to normalise homelessness, his anti-people-in-poverty campaigns and a tenure that always put style above substance. We also talk about the need for a general election and the likely next leader of Fine Gael. Strong language throughout. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack This is a belter of a podcast with Colombian, but Mexico-based El Pais journalist, Nicholas Dale Leal, on all things Latin and South America. We talk Argentina and the plunge into poverty that has created a budget surplus; we dig into Bukele as a celebrity of the aspiring autocrat and there's a lot to be said in advance of the Mexican general election. Nicholas, as always, breaks it down for us in ways that even Martin can understand. I'm not sorry! She gifts us a beautiful song too. Listen this episode and keep Gaza in your thoughts and keep calling for a ceasefire now. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack (Note: This podcast begins with a conversation about the use of ChatGPT in the polling for the referendums that is very, very interesting) The votes are in and no matter what your preference (FWIW, I was a Yes/No voter) it is a humiliation for the government, an omnishambles for lots of the opposition and a crisis of confidence for many NGO's. Much to dissect. Joining us is the best political poll anorak around, Mr irishelectionprojections.com Harry McEvansoneya and the man behind Ireland Thinks, (the only company to produce post-vote polling) Kevin Cunningham. We get into the many reasons for the vote, as well as the good, the bad and very ugly aspects of the fallout. They’d only gone and gotten the unpublished Attorney General's advice to the government on the contentious wording of both referendums. Joining us to discuss the makings of this scoop, the importance of what the advice says and the repercussions it may have for the referendums and beyond, is journalist, editor and one of the founders of The Ditch, Eoghan McNeill. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack No one should have been shocked to hear that Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, say that he sees care as the responsibility of families and not of the State. He is who he Ayn Rand is. But that's not the Ireland most people want to live in. Joining us on the podcast are three wonderful disabled women, Ann Marie Flanagan, Stephain Lynagh and Dr Margaret Kennedy. They talk about the issues 42.b raise for them in their daily lives, the sadness in having to ask for equality and the hope that enough people will vote No and demand wording that is rights-based and doesn't look at people with disabilities as a burden. Please listen and share. Latest from Latin America is here:https://www.patreon.com/posts/patron-exclusive-99521807
Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack Our friend and fellow tortoise shack podcast host, Dr Rory Hearne, has announced that he's seeking to run for the Soc Dems in the upcoming European Elections. So you knew that we were going to sit down and ask him all about it. We discuss his reasons for getting into party politics, the type of tradeoffs that might be required of him, why the Soc Dems and not Sinn Féin, the values that he wants to put at the heart of his campaign and the future of Reboot Republic. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack Rejoining us on the podcast to talk all things Spain and Catalunya is Madrid-based journalist and podcaster, Eoghan Gilmartin. He outlines how the amnesty law that is to pardon Catalan independence advocates, is getting used by a politicised Judiciary to charge several politicians with terrorism. Yes, terrorism. We also talk Spain's climate action challenge as the drought in large parts of the country goes on and we go into why the Spanish government are one of the most vociferous critics of Israel's "war" on Gaza, Palestine. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack (CW: This podcast opens with the audio of Aaron Bushnell's selm-immolation. Please skip to 3 minutes if you don't want to hear it) Forcible depopulation of Gaza has been on Israel’s agenda since 1948. Hadeel Assali, a scholar at Colombia, discusses Israel’s plans, both public and secret, to push out and punish Palestinians in Gaza. In 1969, her uncle was sent on a one way ticket to Latin America as part of a scheme to send 60,000 Palestinian refugees to Uruguay and Latin America. The scheme failed, but Hadeel’s family is scattered all over the world. Meanwhile, regional and global developments vis-a-vis the Gaza genocide continue with an American air serviceman Aaron Bushnell self-immolating in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC in protest of the Gaza genocide. Yousef Aljamal, Helena Cobban, Tony Groves join in to speak about these developments in this PalCast episode. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack We are bombarded with "we've never had it so good" opinion pieces and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar recently warned against fixing the housing crisis too quickly. So it can be hard to understand why many of us feel poorer than ever. The truth is that inequality is not a bug of our economic system, it's a feature. Rejoining us to talk about inequality, broadening the tax bands, housing costs creating lifestyle chaos and why there are lots of solutions is economist with NERI, Ciaran Nugent. Enjoy. Or at least endure. The Gaza Fundraiser is still open here:https://www.patreon.com/posts/update-from-from-99005710 The member-special with Emma DeSouza, Shamim Malekmian and Harry McEvansoneya is here:https://www.patreon.com/posts/patron-exclusive-99136315
Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack The vote on the two referendums on the Family and Care is not far away and while opinion polls suggest a landslide for Yes Yes, events of recent days (Ministers misrepresenting the amendments and FLAC's criticism of the Care aspect) have made enough noise to at least make people investigate what they're voting on. Joining us on the podcast is Constitutional Law expert and lecturer in the subject, Eoin Daly. If you have heard Eoin on with us before you know he "strives" to give clear and unvarnished information about the Irish Constitution, the role of the legislature and what it means in the real world.
Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack Hawaii and Palestine are tied together in many ways. Palestinians’ love for their land reminds us of Kanala Maoli’s love for Hawaii and vise versa. In this episode, which kicks off our second season of PalCast, Dr Yousef Aljamal, cohost Helena Cobban and producer Tony Groves are joined by Uahikea Maile, a professor of indigenous studies at the University of Toronto, to talk about Gaza and the genocide there. The conversation covered the Mauna Kea protest movement, the connections Hawaiians and Palestinians have, modern settler colonialism, the ICJ ruling and much more. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack Sinn Féin made headlines when they said that they wanted average homes to be within reach of average salaries. Their figure of €300,000 was scoffed at by the Society of Charted Surveyors, who put the cost of building a house in Dublin at €460,000. So what to think? Joining us on the podcast is UCD Asst Prof of Architecture, Órla Hegarty, and she breaks it down not only with numbers, but with evidence of homes built for less than both of those estimates. We discuss finance, the developer-led approach and the politics of negative equity vs affordable housing.
