It’s 2nd April and time for some serious nostalgia on this special, bonus episode of the show! Join DJ, Ashwin and EspnCricinfo’s Raunak Kapoor as the podcast walks you down memory lane, recalling memories of every game in India’s victorious 2011 World Cup campaign. The show is nearly 90 mins long - we start with the change in World Cup format from 2007 and take a fresh look at India’s 2011 squad. Along the way, there are some terrific memories, some inside stories and a ton of emotion as the podcasters relive every moment of that heartstopping campaign. Tell us your memories from 2011! DJ, Varun and Ashwin are back and in this age of no live cricket, they have given themselves the unenviable task of picking India’s all time greatest teams. The first half is all about the test game, whereas the second half is ODIs. The debate gets heated. Tough questions are asked including: -Why does DJ drop VVS Laxman from his test XI halfway through the show? -Why does R Ashwin make Varun’s GOAT XI but not play India's next test? -Why is Viru in the ODI GOAT XI for both Varun and Ashwin? -Does Bumrah make the cut in tests or ODIs? -Do all our podcasters have way too much recency bias? Each podcaster's teams are available at Got a better team? Who makes your XI? Write in to us and let us know.
Ashwin and Varun are joined for a very special conversation with Jarrod Kimber - journalist, author, commentator, filmmaker, and much more. Jarrod shares his journey with the game of cricket, from the early days of being part of a cricketing family, to his journey creating Cricketwithballs, eventually to an illustrious career with ESPNCricinfo. He then talks about his experience creating Death of a Gentleman, a 2015 Cricket Documentary about the big 3 countries and their role in the ICC. He shares some great anecdotes about Lalit Modi as well. As an extra surprise, Jarrod Kimber shares some great anecdotes about Rahul Dravid too! Be sure to tune in. DJ is joined this week by Varun and Ashwin, who are both recording from their Delhi home. First up Ashwin gives an update on Varun’s exploits in their gully cricket tournament (or lack thereof). They then discuss the various cricket cancellations this week and IPL 2020 being suspended/postponed by the BCCI because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Of course, Sanjay Manjrekar’s sacking from the BCCI commentary panel comes up - was there any political motivation behind the decision? Also a new Amazon Prime documentary called “The Test” is recommended with a focus on how the Aussies view King Kohli. The second half of the podcast is a great chat with Gulu Ezekiel, author and cricket journalist. On Gulu’s podcast debut, Gulu and DJ discuss his days of covering domestic cricket, the recent Ranji Trophy final (between Saurashtra and Bengal) and his favourite cricketer across the decades. They also discuss his collection of 1500 cricket books and his upcoming books on Indian cricket - “Speed Merchants” and “Mythbusters” - before wrapping with some book recommendations. You can find Gulu on Twitter and can ask him for a full list of his collection here Ashwin bowling v Varun batting IPL 2020 options and update - Sanjay Manjrekar off BCCI panel Twitter debate with Cricketingview
DJ is joined by Ashwin from New York this week to discuss the India v Australia T20 World Cup final. They discuss the lead-up to the big day and how everything went wrong for Team India in a match that was watched by 86,174 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and by millions all over the world on International Women’s Day. They also analyse the team’s performance over the course of the tournament, including the positives to emerge for a young Indian team. After the break, they discuss what ails Indian teams in knockout matches of ICC tournaments before talking about the big inclusions/exclusions from the Indian squad for the 3 match ODI series against South Africa starting on March 12.
Ep. 100: The Hundred

Ep. 100: The Hundred

It’s another full house this week with Varun, Ashwin and DJ as we raise our bat after scoring our maiden ton (the only century scored during the New Zealand v India test series!). It’s also our second year anniversary episode so we get excited, emotional and also a little nostalgic in turn. But there is work to be done so we discuss India’s disastrous 2-0 series loss against New Zealand (first series loss during the WTC). We go over the opportunities wasted by Indian batsmen in the first and second innings, poor use of the DRS and once again India’s inability to get the tail out hurting them in the final analysis. We also rant a little more about India’s intent problem and its selection and team management issues with a focus on Ishant’s injury and swapping Ashwin for Jadeja. We then wrap the series with our thoughts on Kohli’s intense press conference where he snaps at the reporter asking him about swearing at Kane Williamson and the Kiwi crowd. In the second half of the show we talk about our favourite century from childhood and the Women’s T20 World Cup where Team India has topped the group and will play the first semi final. Finally Ashwin hosts a quiz about centuries for Varun and DJ. Enjoy! Link to Kohli press conference
This week Ashwin is joined by Varun and DJ to discuss the ongoing New Zealand v India test match (India trail NZ by 39 runs at the time of recording with six wickets still standing). They discuss team selection (opener/keeper/spinner) and the fallout of Ishant Sharma’s jetlag. They also discuss Kyle Jamieson’s dream debut and try and analyse India’s inability to wipe out the tail. Finally, they all indulge in some crystal ball gazing into days 4 and 5 of the first test. The second half is a superb chat with Snehal Pradhan, ex-India cricketer and broadcaster who is currently in Australia covering the T20 world cup. Ashwin speaks to Snehal about her own cricketing journey, her role models and the growth of women’s cricket around the world. They discuss the favourites for the T20 crown and take a detailed look at Team India’s chances at the women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Snehal’s article on sledging in the women’s game:
This week DJ speaks to Adam Bell of the New Zealand based 'Cricketeers' podcast. Adam has previously appeared a few times on the podcast and this time, it is to deep-dive into India’s 2020 tour of New Zealand. The first half wraps the excellent 3-0 comeback win for the New Zealand side in the ODI series and identifies the big performers from both sides. The second half discusses the India and New Zealand test squads in depth and we get predictions from DJ and Adam for the best batsman and best bowler and also their predicted scorelines! They say misery loves company, and so Ashwin is joined by DJ and Varun this week to discuss India's first series loss since the 2019 World Cup. They discuss the first ODI where the Indian bowlers had an off day allowing New Zeland to get 347 and also the second ODI where the Indian batsman failed to chase 274. They answer the big question on everyone's mind - is there any real cause for alarm? The podcasters then analyse the new opening combination of Mayank and Shaw, Rahul's middle order position, selection policy by the team management and the usual chit-chat about Kedar Jadhav's and Shardul Thakur's spot. The Saini and Jadeja partnership is also brought into the spotlight, with questions being asked afresh of Jadeja’s value. The second half of the podcast starts with the Bushfire fundraising cricket match between Ponting's XI and Gilchrist's XI and the dream match-up of Sachin Tendulkar batting against Ellyse Perry in the break. We then move on to the Indian Women making the triseries final Down Under after England women failed to qualify in the last match. Finally the show is rounded off by a quick discussion about the Under-19 World Cup final, which India was dominating at the time of recording through Bishnoi’s wickets. Listeners will of course know the result by the time the show is out - commiserations to our Indian boys and congratulations to Bangaldesh for winning their country’s first major world title.
Ashwin is joined by Varun and DJ this week to discuss India’s 5-0 T20I destruction of New Zealand. They discuss the back-to-back superovers in the third and fourth T20I, Rohit’s superlative hitting, KL Rahul’s new and improved short sleeves, Sanju Samson’s wasted opportunities and mixed messages to Rishabh Pant. Manish Pandey continues to impress them with crucial knocks in the middle order and they also discuss whether Shivam Dube has made the most of his extended run in the side. The podcast really heats up as the Shardul Thakur situation is analysed at length and there is some debate on whether he deserves a spot in the side. They also discuss whether India’s bowling has become better at defending totals and look ahead to which players they think will make it into India’s WT20 squad for the tournament in Australia later this year. Rohit’s 2009 innings against KKR -
In this mid-week bonus episode, we get the golden chance to interview Craig McMillan, ex New Zealand Cricket, batting coach and now commentator. We speak to “Macca” and deep-dive the incredible third NZ v Ind T20 just concluded on Wednesday, particularly Shami’s last over, the big hitting innings from Kane Williamson as well as Rohit Sharma’s sixes. We also speak about his love affair with India and playing spin, being sledged by Australians, playing in New Zealand’s first ever T20 and playing in 3 World Cups and the 2007 T20 World Cup. We also ask him what it was like to be in the dressing room as batting coach during CWC19 final, how the Kiwis plotted to defeat India in their CWC semi-final and which teams he thinks are favourites to win the WT20. Link to Gilchrist comments on Macca: Link to first NZ T20 ever:
Ashwin is joined by DJ this week as they relive India’s wins in the first two T20Is against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland. The focus of the first half of the show is on the batting performances of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in both games and India’s superb bowling show in the second T20I. Are multi-dimensional cricketers like Rahul, Jadeja, Dube and Shardul the future of India’s T20 side? Or will specialists like Manish Pandey and Navdeep Saini win the day? The second half of the show focusses on the latest Ben Stokes swearing drama in the fourth South Africa v England test and the role of the South African broadcaster. There is some India under-19 discussion and finally we end up matching various Indian cricketers with the US Office characters. Tell us what you think! It was an exciting week as India bounced back from a 10 wicket thrashing at Wankhede on Tuesday to level the series at Rajkot on Friday and then beat Australia in the Bengaluru decider on Sunday to take the bilateral ODI series 2-1. In the first half of the show, Varun, Ashwin and DJ discuss Kohli's batting position, his battle with Zampa, KL Rahul's versatility, Shami's superb yorkers, Kuldeep's guile, Bumrah's comeback and MS Dhoni being left out of the BCCI contract list. The second half is an interview with Australian cricket journalist, Melinda Farrell. Mel relives her journey to cricket journalism, gives us her thoughts on the India-Australia rivalry, Kohli winning the ICC spirit of cricket award and whether Australia has moved on from Sandpaper-gate. She also talks about her favourite pieces of cricket writing. You can find Mel at: Jarrod Kimber's article: Mel's article on Eoin Morgan:
