We all have become so aware of the importance of smell the past few years. Especially during the pandemic when many people lost it. On this week's episode, Hana Tisserand, COO, cofounder and director of operations and communications of the Tisserand Institute joins The Essential Oil Revolution. This week, Hana offers her science based and practical wisdom on essential oils; specifically surrounding that of olfactory retraining. What You Will Learn: 1. The history of the Tisserand Institute and why it transformed from in-person integrative practitioner training in aromatherapy to online holistic training in essential oils.  2. How Hana’s unique background influenced her to be an expert in essential oils. This includes her growing up in the Czech Republic, where integrative, conventional, and natural approaches co-exist in pharmacies side-by-side and what led her to meet Robert Tisserand. 3. The importance of smell as a chemosensory experience. For example, it alerts us to danger, influences our taste, stimulates memory, and determines how we interact with the world on a sensory and hedonistic basis.  4. What component found in essential oils are the most communicated “language” in the world. These molecules are shared by every creature on the planet, from single-celled organisms to mammals.  5. How essential oils constituents can still impact our biochemistry and physiology, even if you lose your ability to smell. 6. The concept of olfactory training and how it works. 7. Why specific essential oils or the constituents found within them, phenylethanol (rosy), 1,8-cineole (eucalyptus), citronellal (lemony) and eugenol (clove), are used in smell training. We also discuss if essential oils are more powerful than the single constituents based on their multiple effects. 6. Why olfactory training works the best for those with infections and an intact, functioning trigeminal nerve. 7. Why the aim of the Tisserand Institute is to provide education and information that is accurate, safe, and accessible to all essential oil users vs. preparing one for aromatherapist certification. 8. One thing Hana does for self-care daily. (Hint it has to do with her love of aromas and hot beverages.) 9. The one things Hana feels we should ditch and replace with instead to be healthier.  10. Hana’s favorite essential oils hack: Using cotton balls/cotton pads for inhalation. It is super easy, quick, portable, safe, and accessible. Bio of Hana Tisserand Hana Tisserand is the COO, cofounder, and director of operations and communications of the Tisserand Institute, the global leader in online evidence-based essential oils education. Hana has been working at the Tisserand Institute since 2014 and she oversees the creation of its course content and curricula, moderates live webinars, supervises the staff, and teaches her own introductory classes. She also writes the Tisserand Institute newsletters, her own blog posts, and detailed scientific articles.  Hana has a unique perspective on how information about essential oils is sourced, processed, and communicated, stemming from her past experiences. She is a sought-after presenter for various prestigious aromatherapy events, including the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy). Being raised in a family of doctors and nurses gave Hana an underlying interest in the workings of the human body, which previously manifested in her specialization in medical translation. Her love for science, essential oils, perfumes, and fragrances runs deep, as does her appreciation for fine teas and coffee.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This merger of psychology, neurology, and aromatherapy helps to release and rewire the memory/emotion complex through neuroplasticity and memory reconsolidation. 3. How the combination of different essential oils in the Aroma Freedom technique impacts various neurotransmitters all at once. This creates a powerful synergy influencing neurochemistry, psychology, and physiology. 4. How Aroma Freedom differs from traditional psychotherapy. It is a dual process of releasing old memories (deconsolidation) and creating new neural pathways (memory reconsolidation). It focuses on clearing blocks so one can live their life’s goals vs. re-living and re-telling of one’s trauma.  5. When to use the Aroma Freedom technique for self-care vs. when to seek a trained practitioner or additional help. 6. The connection between pain in the body and emotions.  7. How this technique is revolutionary in that it accomplishes emotional healing as it supports various aspects of life such as goal setting, stress reduction, relief from painful memories, and overall mood balance. 9. How to use the Aroma Reset technique, one of the six techniques that Dr. Perkus has invented. (Our DIY!) The Aroma Reset Technique: Picture a situation that is keeping you blocked. Name the feeling. Locate the feeling in body. Identify the negative thought that goes with feeling. Grab a relaxing oil and place a drop on palm, breathe the oil into situation, and notice what happens. Assess where you are now, it will be one of three scenarios: (a) You are good to go. (b) Something cleared but there is a residual feeling. In this case, do another round. (c) You opened up a bigger issue. This means you should do either a full session of AFT or seek out an AFT certified practitioner for support. 10. Closing Questions: What Dr. Perkus does for self-care and what he feels we should ditch and replace it with for better health. This was the basis for his international “ EcoTours for Cures ™ “. What got Dr. Z so interested in pain management and arthritis, including how he fought pain and inflammation as a black belt martial artist. Some of the causes of chronic pain: trauma, arthritis, and autoimmune disease.  How naturopathic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), shamanic medicine, and integrative holistic practices converge to deal with the underlying causes of pain and rheumatic disease through using herbs and essential oils. An understanding of various pain pathways and how essential oils and herbs intercept pain’s transmission as they address underlying causes. Some of Dr Z’s favorite herbs and essential oils for pain and their mechanisms. Closing Questions: What are one or two things Dr. Z does every day for health and self-care and what he thinks we should ditch and switch out to be healthier. Imagine a space where you are absolutely void of outside stimuli.  I’m sure, like me, you assume it could be a great benefit to mindfulness and even spirituality. These spaces exist! They’re called float tanks or sensory deprivation chambers, and the benefits go far beyond just effects on the brain. Eliminating external stimuli in float tanks promotes muscle relaxation, relieves tension, and reduces chronic pain, leading to stress reduction and deep relaxation. They’re a great way to optimize blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance sleep quality.  On today’s show I share my own personal experience with float tanks, and hear from float expert Max Casa.  We discuss the benefits of both floating with zero stimuli, as well as the benefits of incorporating essential oils into your tank time.   See full show notes for this episode HERE. I'm a bit disappointed on this interview. I myself am have Mold Toxicity from my home being water front on the lake. Currently going through a detox program and looking for a new place to live. I can only do so much since mine is from humidity, and damage is beyond my repair. I currently use Thieves and/or Clove with Vinegar to clean what I can and difusing with filtered fans and dehumidifiers helps. Just wished there was more talk on Essential Oils and how it can be helpful...

I consider myself to be a beginner with essential oils still. I was introduced to them a few years ago and have used them for various things. Recently I have been working on incorporating them into my daily routine slowly in every way possible. I use them for skincare, health and emotions. My goal is to use them for intentional wellness practices to help me improve my overall health. I recently introduced my sister to this podcast. She doesn't use essential oils or know much about them but I suggested the podcast to her in hopes it would help her be more self aware and keep her mind focused on the tasks at hand that music doesn't fulfill. I told her it might not be the pidcast for her but to give it a try.

to answer the question regarding digestion and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system; when your body is in a state of stress and the sympathetic nervous system is active, blood is shunted away from the digestive tract to your vital organs and extremities. So, when you are in a state of relaxation and the parasympathetic nervous system is active, blood is shunted back to the gastrointestinal tract and will aid in digestion. I can't name any specific studies that talk about this but there is a ton of research that proves this information.
