Richard Hubbard once weighed 350 pounds and was gaining weight at an alarming rate. He would often order three Big Macs at a time to satisfy an insatiable appetite for fast food.   Worried that his health would soon fail, Richard’s doctor prescribed medication for high blood pressure. Not wanting to trade pills for another trip through the drive-thru, he challenged his doctor to allow him to hold off on taking the prescription. His doctor never thought he would succeed, but today Richard is more than 150 pounds lighter and healthier than ever!   Richard joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room™ to share his remarkable journey. The pair also compare their experiences of what it was like to be morbidly obese. From the off-handed remarks from others that resulted in low self-esteem to their “last supper” with massive quantities of fast food, they share what it is truly like for those struggling to get their weight and health under control. More importantly, Richard also shares what it takes to finally make a health breakthrough and keep the weight off for good!   Plus, Dr. Vanita Rahman discusses the science of weight loss, including the way the food found on restaurant menus is engineered to contain the perfect balance of salt, sugar, and fat to get people hooked. She also covers how vegans who don’t shy away from carbs tend to weigh less than those eating a low-carb diet that promises to slim you down!   Chuck also talks about the Dairy Does A Body Bad report from Switch4Good.   — — — Dairy Does A Body Bad Report Download: http://wghtloss.cc/dairybad — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook YouTube: https://bit.ly/PCRMYouTube — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed 202-527-7500 — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. Is it possible for someone who eats a healthy vegan diet to become infected with the coronavirus? As much as you may wish to say no, the fact is that no diet can offer immunity to COVID-19. However, a healthy diet may still make a huge difference in the outcome of the case.   On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Eric O’Grey joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to share his experience with COVID-19. At one point Eric weighed 340 pounds and was on 15 different medications. Doctors even told him that he would die if he didn’t change his ways. He began eating a vegan diet and with the help of a loving dog, Peety, whom he adopted from a local shelter, began to lose weight and reclaim his health. He says that going vegan saved his life once. Now, after getting COVID-19 he thinks it may have saved it for a second time.   Eric also speaks about mother-in-law who didn’t begin eating a plant-based diet until she was 96 and in poor health. Within weeks of making the change doctors took Josephine off of all her medication and she began walking  2 to 3 miles every day! She is proof that it is never too late to get healthy!   Also on the show, Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Jim Loomis answer your questions!   Is it healthy to eat oatmeal for breakfast every day? Will pureeing beans reduce the amount of fiber they have? Is it better to eat nuts raw or roasted? Tips for someone with osteoporosis who is going vegan? Millions are living with the painful symptoms of Crohn’s disease, but they may find relief by eating a vegan diet.   On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Dr. Alan Desmond talks about the global surge of Crohn’s disease that occurred as more and more people began eating the high-fat, high-calorie, and highly processed standard Western diet. Moreover, he and "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll discuss the way in which a plant-based diet can reverse the unhealthy trend and possibly even the diagnosis of Crohn’s! Dr. Desmond also delves into the science behind how a high-fiber diet creates a healthy environment in the gut and shares some successful cases of patients with Crohn’s who have seen dramatic improvements.   Chuck also examines how COVID-19 can affect the heart when he is joined by Dr. Columbus Batiste. The pair discuss new studies showing the ways in which the virus can cause inflammation of the heart muscle and lining as well as the possibility that the damage will be permanent.   Plus, Dr. Batiste talks about The Slave Food Project, which explores the “weaponization of food in the creation of health disparities in African American communities irrespective of income.”   Dr. Desmond will be speaking at the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine.   — — — ICNM Conference Register: https://www.pcrm.org/icnm Use promo code exam20 to save 20%! — — — Dr. Alan Desmond Twitter: @DrAlanDesmond IG: @dr.alandesmond Happy Gut Course: https://bit.ly/happygutcourse — — — Dr. Columbus Batiste Twitter: @iamhealthyheart Slave Food Project: https://www.slavefood.org — — — Studies Crohn’s disease remission with a plant-based diet: A case report: http://tinyurl.com/CDREMISSION Evolving role of diet in the pathogenesis and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases: http://tinyurl.com/GutPaper Recommendation of plant-based diets for inflammatory bowel disease: http://tinyurl.com/IBDCHIBA Dietary guidance from the international organization for the study of inflammatory bowel diseases: http://tinyurl.com/IBDGUIDELINE — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook YouTube: https://bit.ly/PCRMYouTube — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed 202-527-7500 — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. Dr. Kim Williams takes a new look at the racial disparities of the coronavirus as he joins The Exam Room™ podcast. If the playing field were equal, African Americans would essentially be at no higher risk of COVID-19, according to Williams. However, as it stands now, Blacks are dying at a rate nearly 2.5 times greater than Asians and Whites and at even higher levels in some areas. What then is causing the staggering differences?   Dr. Williams, chief of cardiology at Rush University and former president of the American College of Cardiology, examines those factors, including systemic racism, as he joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll.   He also discusses research that finds once data models have been adjusted to account for obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol, race does not play a significant factor in the risk of COVID-19 related deaths or severity of cases. Additionally, Dr. Williams and Chuck talk about the role diet can play in mitigating those risks and how those with limited means can adopt a plant-based diet. Thus, their chances of developing severe symptoms of COVID-19 would decrease.   Plus, Chuck is joined by Laura Sainz who shares her remarkable journey back to health. Laura was thriving professionally in the corporate world, but also living in constant pain after developing Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, arthritis and other chronic conditions prior to the age of 25. Tired of living an unhealthy life, she began to explore her health but it wasn’t until she adopted a fully vegan diet that her pain dissipated. She details the moment the unhealthy dark clouds she had been living under finally lifted and she was able to live vegan vibrantly. Today, she’s helping others on their journey back to health!   Dr. Williams will be speaking at the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine. What you eat can have a major consequence on the environment. How does the carbon footprint of foods from a plant-based diet compare to those found in the standard American diet? The differences can be massive!   On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by Dr. Martin Heller to explore the connection between greenhouse gas emissions and food. It’s not just the health of the environment that is at stake, It’s also your health! Dr. Heller explains how eating a diet that produces the most amount of greenhouse gases can substantially increase your risk of dying from heart disease and cancer!   Plus, he and Chuck examine Burger King’s new “Reduced Methane Emissions Beef” Whopper to see if the restaurant’s claims that lemongrass-fed cows truly reduce “methane emissions” — a fancy term for flatulence and belches — by 33%.   Also, Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Jim Loomis answer your health and nutrition questions!   Does high cholesterol matter if the bad cholesterol levels are low? The coronavirus pandemic is once again shining a light on the effects of systemic racism on health.     On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, we delve into some of the unfair health disadvantages faced by Black and Indigenous people and people of color—along with the medical community’s role in addressing these health disparities.   "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by medical student Brooklynne Palmer, a rising figure in the health community and social media star, to discuss how and why to take race, culture, and income into consideration when talking with patients about their health. Brooklynne describes how understanding patients’ cultures and keeping an open mind about patients’ individual stories and circumstances will help doctors best serve all of their patients.   Brooklynne also shares her own personal story: why she decided to become a doctor and why she plans to incorporate plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine into her future practice!   Plus, Neal Barnard, MD, checks in to discuss new information on the ability of the coronavirus to spread so rapidly, how long it can linger in the air, and how contagious a person is once they become infected.   — — — Brooklynne (“Beets By Brooke”) IG: @beetsbybrooke — — — APM Research Lab https://bit.ly/3hqs0cn — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Dr. Neal Barnard Twitter: @DrNealBarnard IG: @DrNealBarnard Facebook: http://bit.ly/DrBarnardFB — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook YouTube: https://bit.ly/PCRMYouTube — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment: https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed — — — Share the Show   Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. The life expectancy for vegans is up to 10 years longer than those who eat the standard American diet.   Dr. Hana Kahleova joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to discuss her new paper on plant-based diets and healthy aging. Her research shows that eliminating meat and dairy from the diet is capable of more than just extending your life, it can add quality years to it. She says that the Fountain of Youth can be as close as your kitchen!   Dr. Neal Barnard also joins the show to discuss the newest government funded artery clogging creation at Taco Bell, the Grilled Cheese Burrito. While it may sound strange that the government is responsible for what’s on a fast food menu, he and Chuck delve into Dairy Management Inc. which is a federally funded agency that employs an army of food scientists whose sole mission is to create items specifically crafted to get you to eat more cheese. You may think that’s way out in left field until you see the documents backing up the claims.   Also on the show, Dr. Jia Xu checks in from Beijing to provide an update on the coronavirus pandemic in China where it all began. He says in some ways life is returning to normal. In other ways, however, they will never be the same. In the case of eating habits that’s a good thing as Dr. Xu explains how thousands are now adopting a plant-based diet to improve their health!   — — — Plant-Based Diets & Longevity Paper https://bit.ly/3jeK4bd — — — Dairy Management Inc. Do you need to take a multivitamin or supplement or can you get all the vitamins and nutrients you need from food? That is a question that millions are wondering and also something that vitamin companies are counting on. The global supplement industry is worth more than $120 billion as people turn to the vitamin aisle rather than the produce aisle.   On this episode of The Exam Room™, Dr. Neal Barnard joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to settle the great vitamin debate. You will learn how to eat a healthy diet to ensure your body gets nearly everything it needs from the food on your plate and the vitamins you should still be stocking up on even when eating a plant-based diet.   Dr. Barnard also discusses whether the coronavirus can be found on the meat and fish being sold in your local grocery store! Multiple studies have shown people are going home with a lot more than they bargained for.   Plus, Olympian Dotsie Bausch returns to the show! She and Chuck discuss the growing number of elite athletes who are ditching dairy and making the Switch 4 Good! As certain as she is that she has a medal to her name, Dotsie is equally certain that talk of dairy being essential for strong bones is a bunch of hot air. Simply put, milk does a body bad!   — — — Switch 4 Good Website: https://switch4good.org/ Podcast: https://switch4good.org/podcast/ Twitter: @Switch4GoodOrg IG: @Switch4Good — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Dr. Neal Barnard Twitter: @DrNealBarnard IG: @DrNealBarnard Facebook: http://bit.ly/DrBarnardFB — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook YouTube: https://bit.ly/PCRMYouTube — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment: https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed   Share the Show   Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. Hi! Do you have a link to, or more info about the AHA's study looking at their recommended diet vs. vegan diet? Sounds very interesting! I'd like to learn more.
