A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day -- choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse. Welcome to Season Two of Gone South, the Edward R. Murrow-Award winning documentary podcast from C13Originals. Starting in the early sixties, a rag-tag confederation of traveling criminals known as The Dixie Mafia terrorized every state from Georgia to Oklahoma. Its hundreds of members, unofficially headquartered in Biloxi, Mississippi, specialized in scams, heists and murder. Their ringleader — the estranged son of a prominent Oklahoma politician — was a skilled and charismatic outlaw named Kirksey Nix. When Nix was sentenced to life in prison at Angola for a murder he committed in New Orleans, The Dixie Mafia was thought to be extinct. But fifteen years later, a sitting criminal court judge named Vincent Sherry and his wife Margaret, a mayoral candidate for the city of Biloxi, were assassinated. As the case ran cold, authorities were forced to confront a disturbing reality: the reign of Kirksey Nix and The Dixie Mafia was far from over. Gone South is a creation and production of Peabody-nominated C13Originals, a Cadence13 studio, in association with Jed and Tom Lipinski. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Introducing (part of) The Fall Line team’s second podcast, One Strange Thing, where we search the nation’s news archives for stories that can’t quite be explained. One Strange Thing unfolds regional tales of the mysterious, the paranormal, the unexplainable, and the delightfully weird. In this episode clip, we consider that, perhaps some people are born lucky. . . and then there are others, who have singular experiences that can be described as, well, miracles. That seems to have been the case for fifteen people in a small Nebraska town in 1950. On June 10th, 1983, the decomposing body of a well-dressed man was found in a desolate canyon near Los Angeles. John Doe #94 would soon be identified as missing variety show producer Roy Radin. He'd last been seen after meeting with a mysterious woman in a gold dress. Her name was Lanie Jacobs. Jacobs and Radin were obsessed with becoming Hollywood movie producers. And when their paths collided, it led them to a tantalizing film deal promising fame and fortune. But then, a twisted script unfolded, plunging them into a million-dollar cocaine and cash heist, a tangled web of lies, and ultimately – murder. The trail led investigators right to Hollywood's doorstep, linking former golden boy producer Robert Evans to the case and dredging up Radin's own troubled past. But the case turned ice cold. You want a compelling case??? Read about the disappearance of Wojciech Fudali in Rhode Island!! I'm surprised this case has not blown up, and those friends were not held accountable. Their story is very sketchy.
Even someone where English is a second language, they are still mansplaining her. He literally repeats what she says about the FBI profile, like it is his own original thought, not an agreement to what she just said. Crazy.
There is a living, unidentified person on NAMUS that I think should be checked with the Millbrook family DNA. It would be a long shot, but she is the right age and has some similarities to the Millbrook twins. She has amnesia and doesn't know who she is. @crimelinespod
I don't understand; if you have a DNA database from families and DNA from certain unidentified human remains, why can't you just run a match sequence on all of them? When you have DNA at a crime scene, you run that DNA against DNA in a database of known offenders or other crime scenes (CODIS). Why do they just cross reference on 'suggestion'? Make a database for missing and unidentified people to run against each other and family members.
