In this episode I help a listener figure out ways to get back on track to concentrating on her studies. Relationships and heart breaks are hard, but you'll be good to go with these 10 tips! Works like a charm! You got this.
I had a great live session answering questions with Touro COM's AMWA chapter and I answered questions like: 1. To start off, this past year and a half we have been involved in probably the most severe pandemic we have seen in modern human history and many of our healthcare workers, including yourself, had to be on the front lines. How did this impact you as a physician and has it changed your perspective of your career? Tune in to hear the answer!
In this episode I break down the story of my first job interview and how I had to overcome the boys club by self promoting. Many women find it very difficult to talk about accomplishments, especially during an interview. You’re not alone. This is because you have been told since you were a little girl that you should not be boastful. This is not unfounded. You’re right, because we’ve heard over and over again that strong women are perceived as bitches in the workplace. Successful women are considered less likable. You’ll learn all about the self promotion gap, and how to combat it!
This week I talk with Trauma Surgeon, Dr. Reza Kermani about his journey through the machismo surgical culture and how his gay sexual orientation as a middle eastern man caused him to make certain residency choices, that interestingly, never limited him in becoming a top tier surgeon. His go getter attitude will leave you inspired!
I talk with Dr. Kimi Caswell about her early dental career years. She said "I met with several dentists and orthodontists and they were gracious enough to take me to lunch, but they were defining my role for me. You know, you should be a wife, you should have children. You shouldn't try to open an office. You should practice one day a week." Sound familiar?
In this episode, I answer a listener's question. Dear Female Doc, I failed to get into medical school for the second year in a row. I just know that it’s my dream and I want to give it one more try, but I don’t know if I’m actually smart enough for it right now. I’m lost. Please help! Should I apply again or just forget it?
In this episode, I break down all the details of what it's like being a traveling doctor, how you can be one too, and all the pros and cons. The traveling doctor field is also called Locum Tenans.
I talk with Dr. Stephanie Woelfel DPT about the taking the time to get to know yourself, so you can really find true balance. She had THE plan in her head. You know, where it's like, okay, I'm done with school and I got a job and now I'm going to get married and I'm going to buy a house, and all of these things that society or just the way you grew up, kind of tells you is the order. Both of us have similar paths in that we kind of thought our careers and life was going to go a certain way and then it didn't, but in the most beautifully "wrong" way that we thought it was supposed to go.  I wonder, do you feel the  same?
Today, we're going to be talking a little bit about burnout and we'll be diving deep into how to pull yourself out of the burnout that comes with more severe personal trauma.  I can't wait for you guys to listen. XOXO, The Female Doc

So, today's guest is Dr. Toyin Alli, PhD and we're going to dig into the belief systems that come up so often for some of us in the healthcare sphere. She's amazing and I can't wait for you guys to dive into this episode!   XOXO, The Female Doc
Today, I wanted to talk a little bit more about academic medicine and what a successful career in academic medicine really looks like. So, today's guest is Dr. Inga Hoffman and she's had an incredible academic career and she's really enjoyed it. She's very passionate about it and I can't wait to dive a little bit more into all of the positive parts of academic medicine and really what it looks like to build and lead through academic medicine.
So, what is a mentor exactly? On this week's episode, I'm going to break down mentors for you and dig into what mentorship really is. Last week, we were able to see the power of female mentorship. This week I'm also going to talk about something called sponsors and sponsorship. That's a term that we typically don't hear in the professional space as often. So I'm going to dive a little bit deeper into what a real sponsor is.  Welcome to The Female Doc show.
Not every woman has to work. Not every woman has to stay at home. There shouldn't be a war between working moms and stay-at-home moms. We should be a sisterhood. In this episode, Dr. Khan talks with Dr. Amber Miller, Dr. Melissa Eseltine Bass, and Dr. Linda Kalamkeryan, female doctors she met during the ICU Surge in California about how much women in healthcare can accomplish when they collaborate in their different roles.
A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine explored the gender roles of career-oriented academic MDs in the workplace juxtaposed with domestic responsibilities. Women in the study were more likely to have partners who worked full-time at a rate of 85.6% compared to men at 44.9%. In this episode, Dr. Khan discusses how household responsibilities can hinder academic career achievement for women!
Men are labeled ambitious. Women are labeled aggressive. Men are labeled leaders. Women are labeled bossy. Men get powerful labels, and women get negative ones. In this episode, Dr. Khan explains how labels often hold back women from asking for what they want or behaving how they in the workplace for fear of not being liked or not being a team player. She discusses how you can help combat this stigma!
In this episode, Dr. Khan describes a perplexing patient case that was originally thought to be a classic heart attack (STEMI). What will the final diagnosis be? How did Dr. Khan solve this mystery case? Listen to find out!
Burnout syndrome is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. I burned out early. Right out of fellowship, Dr. Khan no longer wanted to be a doctor. The grueling hours, her grumpy co-workers, and distant patient engagements left her totally exhausted. However, over the course of a year, Dr. Khan was able to rediscover her passion for medicine. In this episode, learn the 5 ways Dr. Khan was able to overcome burnout.
In this episode, Dr. Khan answers an audience question on how to manage an amazing career and pair that with creating a family life that you want. Dr. Khan breaks it down into three categories: personal life, family life, and what it means to be a great physician. She shares her insight and personal experience on how to achieve and manage it all!
Dr. Khan dives deep into the hot topic of the differences between a DO and an MD. This is a super common question Dr. Khan gets, especially in the US, as there's a stigma that DOs are not real doctors (which is not true)! In this episode, Dr. Khan busts myths about the osteopathic profession in the United States.
