Description
Hello and welcome to the Friday ReFresh, a Ben and Travis podcast. I’m Ben from Ben and Travis and I have been working as a minister for 23 years and as a counselor for the last 10 years. I recognize that there are a lot of things in our world that impact different people in different ways. Working in counseling I’ve learned that there are a lot more things that can rock our world that I never knew existed. Many of those things are hidden struggles that others may never know about — or at least they don’t know about until something comes along and quite literally “opens up a can” of past trauma or hidden struggles.
So I invite you to come along with me on this journey of exploration and understanding through this podcast which offers short episodes and hopefully informational and motivational material to help you as you prepare for the last day of the week. Not every episode will be about a mental health struggle but there will certainly be weeks that are. Sometimes we will just hope to give you a boost as you close out the week. However, there are some rules of engagement here though - some understanding that I want you to have before you agree to go on the journey.
1. Keep An Open Mind - Some of the things we talk about here may be new territory. It may be like one of those movies like Journey to the Center of the Earth where you see things that seem hard to comprehend. I know there were a lot of things that were hard for me to grasp at first and has certainly been hard to relate to others. So think of it like Journey to the Center of Your Soul.
2. It’s an Ever-Changing Landscape - The counseling field is something that seems to change all the time so understand that I may say some things that may be different than what you might have been taught in the past. It may also change as I record these over time. It is also true that various theories of counseling reveal different techniques for dealing with things so I will likely be sharing things from a wide variety of therapeutic mindsets.
3. No Two Experiences are the Same - Just because we share a thought about anxiety or depression doesn’t mean it will apply to every person who hears and so this is certainly not a replacement for good person centered counseling - but you may very well find some helpful tips for various things you may face.
So, do you think you are good to start that journey? I hope so. Travis and I hope through this short podcast, along with the weekly Helping, Healing, Humor Podcast and our website to bring a better understanding of mental health to all people but especially to the church. It is a part of us that has been ignored for far too long. I hope that even in this short little podcast to help us have a little more understanding.

What does your pyramid look like? Is it fully constructed? Or is it stuck in the middle of construction somewhere?
I guess I should explain before I ask questions like that.
I’m sure at some point in your high school or collegiate career you have come across Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Abraham Maslow proposed that these five needs are the motivators behind human behavior. They start at the bottom of the pyramid with the most basic of needs and work up to the more complicated and self-realized toward the top.
Initially it was believed the lower goals always had to be completed first with a linear view of how they are accomplished, it is accepted now that different individuals and cultures may achieve various levels at different times.

This coming Monday I plan to load up with three of my friends and go west. Well, west, then north, then more west. It will be quite a long ride—26 hours or more to be exact. But knowing the company, I’m counting on it being an epic journey.
We went on this trip together several years ago and we have been wanting to take a trip back to Gillette Wyoming to hunt pronghorn ever since. So we finally made the trip happen this year. Unfortunately I didn’t get drawn for a pronghorn tag but was able to secure a whitetail doe tag to at least get to take a shot at something.
So tonight I spent a little time at the range. I needed to make sure that my equipment was still true to form from last year’s whitetail deer season in Alabama. Three shots at a steel plate at 200 yards confirmed I am indeed ready to head out. My sights were on and my rifle true. Now to pack up and hit the road on Monday morning.

A few days ago I posted something on social media. I hadn’t really said a lot over the years online about the thing that pushed me towards counseling as a profession. It wasn’t the final push but it started the interest and the journey.
It was of the day my girlfriend was killed in a tragic car accident. This week was the 26th anniversary of that event and there have been other tragic events that have taken place locally that hit close to my heart. I felt the lessons learned then, could also help some now.
What I learned was sometimes all the world needs is for one person to be vulnerable and it leads to others opening up like they haven’t been able to before. You can find the full post here: https://www.benandtravis.com/blog/in-memory-of-tabitha-lynn-gean

Every Monday of the football season you can catch an episode of fun with Travis as he and the panel of dislike choose a game being played that week and what they like about or dislike about the teams, their school, their city, or any other random material about them -- many times...or most of the time based off non-football things.
It’s a fun couple of minutes to start your day. You can listen here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/good-old-fashioned-dislike/id1643163790

I attended a prayer service on Monday for the local elections that were to take place on Tuesday. It was a powerful hour of strong prayers, thoughtful readings, and encouraging fellowship. One of the individuals that led a prayer used a phrase that I had not heard in many years and it made me pause and consider myself and our community of faith for just a few moments.
The gentleman said, “Lord, prop us up on our leaning side.”

What do rabbits eat? Most people would immediately say carrots. Bunny rabbits at Easter have carrots on attached to them. Pictures that kids color usually have a carrot close by. It seems to be a no-brainer because of how much rabbits and carrots appear together.
What if I told you that carrots are actually terrible for rabbits? That carrots have a high sugar content, and while a very small dime sized snack of a carrot might be ok for a rabbit on occasion, they are actually very detrimental to their health if eaten in high quantity?

I was speaking to someone the other day who seemed to be pretty down on the young people of today. Granted, he works in a field where he interacts with young folks entering the work force and I’m sure he experiences the worst in people from time to time.
However, as I heard him make a few comments that seemed to be down on younger people, I couldn’t help but think about all the things I’ve witnessed this summer.
May ended with watching several kids graduate who already had in their minds what they wanted to spend the rest of their lives doing. Some heading to college while others going straight into the work force. I’ve watched the commitment over the past few years of those who have chosen both of those paths and been impressed.

The first half of my summer has been pretty! So I took a little break from the Friday Refresh for a couple of weeks.
I got to hang out a day or two with some spiritual heroes of mine, Halo and Rhonda Fernandez as my family helped them prepare for a VBS in Munford Alabama.
Then Travis and I spent a little time in Lexington, Kentucky with the North Lexington Church of Christ for a mental health workshop.
After being home a few short days I took off with a few members of my family and we road tripped from North Alabama to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
We went about four days on the beautiful Mackinac Island for my daughter’s Senior Trip and then saw some waterfalls and NFL football stadiums on the way home.
After barely resting we spent the week in one of my favorites places on earth — Maywood Christian Camp. Such great memories from over 30 straight years of spending a week of my summer there.

I was sitting in my office this week listening to a song that echoes a similar sentiment to the old hymn “Count Your Blessings.” In this song by Seph Schlueter it says,
“One, two, three, up to infinity. I’d run out of numbers,
before I could thank you for everything.
God, I’m still counting my blessings for all that you’ve done in my life.
The more that I look into the details the more of Your goodness I’ll find.
Father, on this side of Heaven I know that I’ll run out of time,
But I will keep counting my blessings knowing I can’t count that high.”
As the song played I glanced around the room seeing glimpses of the blessings in my 26 years of ministry accumulated on my shelf.

As I drove through town the other day a red light stopped me at an intersection where there was an old wooden light pole standing at the corner. It had clearly been there a while based on the condition of the wood. It has undoubtedly weathered a lot of storms.
It wasn’t the light it gave, the power it conveyed through the wires running across the top, or the age of the wood that caught my attention though. What caused me to stop and stare at it for a few moments were the hundreds, if not thousands of nails, staples, and tacks protruding from its chipped and damaged wood.

When is the last time that you stopped to observe your surroundings?
When was the last time you simply paused to take in the sights and sounds of life as it goes by?
We have all heard the phrases “Life goes by fast” or “time flies.” Everyday seems fast-paced and if we aren’t careful it will seem like our kids grow up in a flash and our own youth is left behind.

Welcome in to the Friday Refresh brought you you by the Adventures of Ben and Travis and the WorryCoaster children’s book. Written by myself and Travis Creasy and expertly illustrated by our friend and brother, Jacob Hennigan.
It is a feel good story of how to overcome anxiety and fear with a section in the back for parents, youth workers and teachers with helpful hints to keep the conversation going.
Go to BenandTravis.com/books for more information.
Challenge Youth Conference (www.cyconline.com) weekend is back again. For over 25 years this conference has taken place in the Smoky Mountains. For many years now it has been in the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge and there have been close to 14,000 attendees some years. Our congregation will have over 40 in attendance this weekend and other congregations will have 100. Travis and I get to do some crazy activities and videos to get the event started and then we also participate in S.W.A.T. (Skits With A Truth) team. Most people who have attended, whether adults or teenagers, have found the weekend to be encouraging in their faith and they often leaved challenged to live a bold life for Christ.
The speakers this year include Chris Miller, Lonnie Jones, Brad Montague, Craig Evans, and David Shannon. All men who will challenge listeners to live to a higher standard.
The theme this year is Look Up! An easily relatable theme when in the smokies mountains of East Tennessee.

I have always loved cartoons. I grew up when Saturday morning cartoons were the most anticipated event of the week for every elementary school child…and some of us teenagers.
He Man, GI Joe, Thundercats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, Smurfs, loony Tunes, Transformers, Scooby Doo, Garfield, and DuckTails to name a few.
