Pirate Queen, the first all-female Pirate Metal band from the Bermuda Triangle, releases their debut album 'Ghosts' on May 3rd, 2024, via Despotz Records. Discovering Pirate Queen is like finding Eldorado. The album Ghosts has such addictive melodies, and it is so catchy that after a few listens, it might transform you into a pirate. The songs are done with the mastery of mixing precious power metal with pirate, fantasy, symphonic, and fantasy elements. The beautiful guitar melodies and enchanting vocals of Her Majesty Maria Aurea offer explosions of notes and harmonies with a massive production that make this album a pirate metal masterpiece. Pirate Queen is more than a regular heavy metal band. When listening to the album, it will submerge you into a story that sparks imagination. You will enter a new universe and experience the music on a different level. From ice-cold Arctic guitar parts to mysterious vocal harmonies and a haunted sea atmosphere, to warm Tropical adventure metal orchestration, you will find yourself floating in the beautiful world of Pirate Queen. The album is magical, with a real story behind it. When you close your eyes, it will take you on a breathtaking journey where you will meet pirates, sirens, and ghosts. Pirate Queen is the first all-female metal band that combines music and LARP at their live shows. They use Epic Armoury weapons exclusively, wear Museum Replicas boots, and produce their own Pirate Queen Sikkim Gin. Each member has her own character with unique characteristics, abilities, and even weapons. Five new talented musicians whose real identities seem to be a bit of a mystery. Beautiful ladies, demons, ghosts? Formed in 1523? Are they returning after 500 years? Descendants of famous pirates have settled all over the world. Their kingdoms control the world's seas to this day. In their society, women hold the highest positions. Some born in this world, others sent from outer worlds, all loyally serve their queen. The old nautical chronicles mention a time when a group of five girls will come together. Who are related and united by the gift of piracy. In the ungodly year 2023, the New Pirate Queen took over the command and continues the tradition of her ancestors. To charm and loot. Their Pirate Kingdom's capital, Lyxion, is a mystical floating island that floats around the Bermuda Triangle. We spoke to Pirate Queen about the debut album, getting to this point and how Pirate Queen found their way. We also spoke about the reaction to their music so far, what that means to the group, how they are going to create an immersive live show, and so much more. EYE – the new band from Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard (MWWB) singer-songwriter/musician Jessica Ball – recently announced the arrival of their eagerly awaited debut album, 'Dark Light’ set for release on 26th April via New Heavy Sounds (Shooting Daggers, MWWB, Blacklab). ‘Dark Light’ is an intensely atmospheric fusion of emotionally charged songcraft and inspired sonic energy. The clue is in the album's paradoxical title. Chilling and even bleak melodies with arrangements daringly and deliberately stripped down and minimal. Revealing a kinship with sonic bed-fellows Mazzy Star, Chelsea Wolfe or even Portishead. Jessica details: These songs have been many years in the making... Some of these ideas were crafted before MWWB, this is something I've always wanted to do. Over the last couple of years, I’ve spent some time on finishing and crafting these ideas and pieces of music into songs. Some were snippets of lyrics from my early twenties which reflect on what seems like a different person. I think it’s quite poetic how it’s all come together now. I was also encouraged after finding musicians who understood the vision and style I was trying to achieve, and of course my experience of being in MWWB. I’m a guitarist above all, and I loved reconnecting with guitar again. It feels like all my influences and favourite styles have come together in this album. Shoegaze, doom, folk, dream pop... It’s a real mix bag but as a whole, it represents many different stages of my life and tells a story. The album ultimately is quite introspective yet lyrically loose enough to be open to interpretation – I’ve always been a fan of songs that seem to perfectly slot into the situation I’m experiencing and not too specific to one person's experience... I think that comes across in this album. We spoke to Jessica about the album, about making her vision a reality, being able to actually enjoy a release, working with others in this capacity, growing as a musician and person, and so much more. Once again, chaos is unleashed. This time, it comes in the form of ‘Coagulated Bliss’. The new album from grindcore legends, Full of Hell. It will be released on April 26th, 2024, via Closed Casket Activities. Full of Hell are back, and while they are as horribly intense as ever, this album comes with a deeper focus on song-writing. The chaos is still there, don’t be fooled, but there are so many clear attempts to make this a tighter and more absorbing listen. Something that is reflected in both the variety and length of many of the tracks. Full of Hell aren’t standing still, and nor will you once you get your ears around Coagulated Bliss. Tel Aviv’s Tomorrow’s Rain will release their second full length studio album, ‘Ovdan’, on April 19th, 2024 via AOP Records. Few people could suffer a severe heart attack, have open heart surgery, and come back stronger than ever. This is what vocalist Yishai Swartz went through in 2023, and yet here he stands in 2024 with the much-anticipated new album from Tomorrow’s Rain. A listening experience like little else this year, and a listening experience that will unlikely not be topped for the rest of this year. Partially, because Tomorrow’s Rain are an experimental band, and partially because it’s an album packed with guests. It is an understatement to say that Tomorrow’s Rain have gone above and beyond here, and the result is something quite special indeed. Read our full review of the new album here: https://www.gbhbl.com/album-review-tomorrows-rain-ovdan-aop-records/ We spoke to bassist Yaggel Cohen, who himself, recently suffered a heart attack. Set for release on April 12th, 2024, via Frozen Records, ‘In the Aftermath of Blight’ is the new album from French atmospheric sludge metal band, Subterraen. This new album marks a reinvention for the band, having started in 2017 and releasing the album ‘Rotten Human Kingdom’ in 2020 via Transcending Obscurity Records. This new era for Subterraen sees them group emerges from a two-year long writing process with a completely revamped line-up and the firm intention of breaking away from the conventions of sludge/doom metal. Written to be radically different from its predecessor, ‘In the Aftermath of Blight’ proves to be more complex and skilfully written. The album benefits from a much higher production value and combines the aggression and atmospheres of post-sludge with the melodies of doom metal. Inspired by bands such as Pallbearer, Neurosis, Yob and Paradise Lost, Subterraen consciously distances itself from its influences to create a unique sonic identity. ‘In the Aftermath of Blight’ takes a cynical look at the human condition in the midst of personal tragedy and natural disaster took its inspiration from numerous biblical and literary references. Dehn Sora’s mesmerizing artwork captures these themes masterfully. We spoke to Subterraen about the new album, about the journey to this point and all the trials that the band have faced, the distinct new direction they are going in, what they would like to accomplish this year, and so much more. On March 15th, 2024, the ever-relentless metalcore band Indevth will release their brand-new EP, ‘Drowning’. An EP that deals with mental anguish, hopelessness and feelings born out of the grit and grime of a bleak modern Britain. A new era begins, the era of InDevth. The old punk adage was to live fast, die young, and have a good-looking corpse - and while Gavin King gave the first one his best shot, he got sidetracked and skipped the next step. Now, almost 50 years after burning brightly on Bristol’s burgeoning punk scene of the late seventies with his band Private Dicks, he finds himself having a late surge of creativity, and is pleased to reveal that his debut solo album ‘Skeletons’ will be released on March 29th 2024 via Heartbeat Records. With Private Dicks, the band that first threw Gavin into the spotlight, having just released a live album, and while he waits for his bandmates to finally finish off what will be the Bristol legends’ second album, he has turned his attention to his first, fully-fledged, solo effort. With help from Dicks’ guitarist and life-long friend Paul Guiver and long-time Tears For Fears and Robbie Williams guitarist Neil Taylor, Skeletons is eight tracks of dark, catchy, post-punk angst, the work of a man who has taken another look at his life and at the state of the world and had a few thoughts… We spoke to Gav about his debut solo release, why he felt this needed to be done, his extensive history in music, and so much more. UK metallers Defects will release their profoundly personal debut album, Modern Error, on 24 May via Mascot Records. They will call through the UK, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic and Poland. Buy tickets here: https://www.wearedefects.com/ Modern Error is breathtakingly raw with emotion. Conceptually, it is a deeply cathartic album that acts as a vessel for singer Tony Maue to organise his thoughts on the trauma of being taken into care at a young age. Threaded through the album are the experiences that Maue has been through, how the five members of the band are all connected and why, at this moment, right now, is the right time for this band to exist. For themselves as much as anyone else. We spoke to vocalist Tony Maue about the album, the past few years and the rise of Defects as a force, about some of the experiences the album details, about the Orbit Culture tour, and so much more. Rising from the ashes of ALAZKA & Time, The Valuator, brand new group FLOYA emerge onto the music scene. The German duo of Phil Bayer & Marv Wilder establish a wild blend of solid rock foundations alongside modern EDM elements and world music, inspired by their childhood influences, namely Peter Gabriel, U2 & Sting. Carving a name for themselves individually in the past as the founders and songwriters of their praised acts, Phil & Marv are now headed on a journey of their own. FLOYA will release their debut album ‘Yume’ on March 8th, 2024, via Arising Empire. It’s an anthemic listen, with some really sweet melodies, plenty of robust rockiness, and a creative flair that shows the duo have had lengthy song-writing careers already. UK punk-upstarts Noah and the Loners released their new EP, ‘A Desolate Warning’, on February 28th, 2024, Via Marshall Records. Concerning the new album, we said: A rallying cry for those navigating the complexities of adolescence and societal expectations, the overpowering grip of toxic relationships, isolation and the stigmas surrounding mental health. Noah and the loners have plenty to say, and that’s the way they like it. Delivering short and sharp jabs. Punky, yes, but also infectious and fun. Read our full review of the EP here: https://www.gbhbl.com/ep-review-noah-and-the-loners-a-desolate-warning-marshall-records/ We spoke to vocalist and guitarist Noah Lonergen about the new EP, about making music in such a complex world, the benefits of being open and honest, having fun making music, and so much more. Louisville, Kentucky based high fantasy inspired metal quintet, Volcandra are poised to leave an enduring mark on 2024 with their sophomore full-length, The Way of Ancients. Out on March 1st, 2024, via Prosthetic Records. Concerning the new album, we said: Fantastical tales told through the medium of blackened melodeath, Volcandra’s The Way of Ancients is one hell of a fresh-sounding offering. For all its story-telling qualities, it is an emphatic metal album, and a lot of the time, hits hard enough to rival the more extreme side of this sound. Read our full review here: https://www.gbhbl.com/album-review-volcandra-the-way-of-ancients-prosthetic-records/ We spoke to vocalist Dave Palenske about the new album, the progression of the Volcandra sound, imparting story-telling aspects into the music, and so much more.
