I spent the morning with Skate 32707 experiencing a home grown, grass roots initiative to grow the ultra-positive skate culture in central Florida. Cool people, engaged citizens, tons of fun and respect. All of this is spearheaded by a group that has been working for 4 years guided by the enthusiastic leadership of Mr Larry Littrell who has innovated and cultivated a tribal swell of desire for a skate park in Casselberry Florida. Check out my day (as unusual as most of mine are) and the interview of Larry about their hard work. Oh, and celebrate Skating. It's rock-solid-awesome in so many ways - healthy, character building, community growing, friendship fostering fun. #GoSkate
A big part of who I am is how I choose to present myself. Yeah, I might do the comic t-shirt thing a lot when I'm home or in chill/creative mode BUT... When in "Go-Mode" I'm the character I want to be and want you to see. Its a practice I've had for more than 2 decades and I believe it works well. I share the evolution of my style (if you can call it that) and why I evolve and how it works so that you might consider how you may want to present yourself to your industry. And I'm doing it today while washing the car...
Among many other things, this week I hung with David Pavlik. David, a Messianic Jewish Pastor with a congregation in South Orlando Florida, is a real estate finance expert. Today we talk about his recent trip to Columbia and a phenomena he calls Bandit Signs (the big Get Attention Lesson for today). Today's podcast is a bit of a winding road as it took the shape of my schedule for a day but the results are pretty interesting.
The Pixar 22 Rules of Storytelling reviewed, riffed and revised by ME - Josh Pies - comes to a close. If you want the full PDF summary of the series PLUS my BONUS of the TOP 3 Screenwriting BOOKS from my collection then go to the film school tab at www.GetAttention.work In this episode: I thank Emma Coats for her hard work. I name drop Ryan Koo from NoFilmSchool.com for his hard work. We noodle with some Big Lebowski thinking. We realize that there's NO FAILING. You either Win or Learn. We wonder what would happen if Chewbacca showed up in the swamp. And... I pitch KONG BRANDS on a great commercial idea (as an example of applying a rule... and as a pitch - call me Kong)

We're almost through the 22 Rules. I have a lot to say on these as I've always been a big fan of introspection as a writer thanks to my old philosophy days. This episode has a lot of meat in it for anyone who wants to write authentic characters and stories that will resonate with viewers. If I had to summarize it for you... It's a lot of rules to call yourself on your own crap... Enjoy! Find the full 22 Rules breakdown as a FREE Swipe File at www.GetAttention.work by visiting the School link.
Ever wonder how someone gets a "big donor" to part with their money? I have. In fact, from a life in film producing I hear this as a woe all the time - "I have the script and the people to deliver but I just need funds". There are people who find funds, and Lydia Palmer of the Rochester Institute of Technology is a leader in this field. On this episode, Lydia explains the RIT way of engaging their base and offers ideas on how people - especially my Indie Film Friends and the start-up business crowd - can elicit the right attention that can lead to funding. We end on oreos... Always amazes me where conversations lead!
I get this question way too often: "What does a video cost?" It's a tough question because there are too many variables but, if you lock in the variables it's actually NOT tough at all. In this episode I not only reveal the MAGIC NUMBER but I also reveal it's bones AND I reveal why the heck I decided to spill these beans. And, for some reason I tell you about my dream car... Yeah, dunno... www.GetAttention.Work www.youtube.com/joshpies
If I were asked to sum up the spirit of Ben Woelk (https://www.linkedin.com/in/benjaminwoelk/) it might be the name of his consulting company, "Slow Road". There's something deep and contemplative about him. Conversely, the energy he puts into his thoughtful pursuit of change making for communities is palpable. Ben and I chat today to learn about his passion for strengthening communities and I dig to find out how his work gets so much amazing, positive attention. Listen carefully around 28:30... Ben drops some serious, actionable knowledge which we can all dig into and apply in our own lives. Enjoy. (Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast, on YouTube.com/joshpies and www.GetAttention.work
Yep, it's true. Our kid is Wolverine - birth cert and all. And there's a great story and reason behind doing so. Its a reason that likely can inspire YOU to take a leap of your own, too. Today's vlog/podcast is an elaboration on Friday's "Low Tech Friday" vlog (which I never podcast because it is so visual). This one has a great "Get Attention" lesson in it from 2 angles - 1 my twitter and youtube shaming of an evil corp got attention and 2 - my thoughts on how said evil corp might un-evilize themselves.
Western NY is lucky to have Scott "Fitz" Fitzgerald on the air at Fickle 93.3 but what I learned from him today, among the many tidbits, was from his work as an indie filmmaker. He firmly believes that caring for people above self brands himself in a positive way that not only is right but it makes working with him worth the effort. He of course is quite right. It's inspiring to hear how he handles the world of indie filmmaking and instructive to us all in how we might handle our dealings with people in our own worlds. Enjoy.
Blech, I hate words that have little meaning. The word cinematic is so overused with such little actual meat - no context, no real value. Nearly as bad as "filmmaker". Double Blech. This episode is ME, Josh Pies, on an exhaustion infused semi-rant rooted in a real professional's position on the marketspace for motion picture content. With new parenthood's natural gift of no sleep - we have a 4 day old in the house - I give you some nuggets of truth a la Josh. (I listened to this before uploading it... I'm not as crazy as I make this sound).
I had the privilege of being on the Ted Show with Ted Bogert (host) last week. Ted's show, live 5 days a week and hosted in Orlando FL high atop the city from the 18th floor of the BBT Tower (sounds cool, right?), is a lot of fun to listen to and more to be on! Ted grilled me on who I am, what I do, and where I'm going (hint: sharing my expertise as a personal brand has become a passion so I'm going there more!). Ted's interest in my story allowed me the rare opportunity to tell the story of how I became the expert I am on Film/TV/Video and advertising & business strategy. Viral videos are so 2009, right? No... talking about them as if they are an end goal is so 2009. We're past that because people know that they shouldn't pursue "going viral" BUT... we all still wanna do it. This podcast is from the Monday Vlog (see it on Youtube for visuals, shortcut is visiting the URL www.GetAttention.WORK). Its all about the Casey Neistat-super vlogger & Jack Conte of Patreon/Pomplamoose fame love fest going on right now. Lost of big views and HUGE subs on YouTube for Jack. Good stuff to learn about and think about. Listen in now! Subscribe to the podcast and the YouTube channel while you're at it!
Jan Edwards, founder of Paving The Way, is being the change she wants to see in the world. It is easy to agree that human trafficking is deplorable and must be stopped. Many organizations rescue victims but few prevent it. Awareness is the key to prevention and Jan, a career marketing pro, is on a mission to do just that. How is she getting attention for this issue? Listen to the podcast and find out. Trust me - this is a big topic, not easy to talk about BUT we must AND her way of getting attention is VERY CREATIVE! (Find out more about her org at StopTraffickingToday.com) ~ Josh
How you dress matters... it affects a lot actually. Josh Pies rolls with this concept in a short podcast.
