Aloha! If you ever wanted to know what its like to survey in Hawaii...THIS is the episode for YOU! The guys were joined this week by Meyer Cummins, Land Boundary Surveyor V in the Land Survey Division for the State of Hawaii and Craig Clouet, Data Scientist, State Disaster Management, State of Hawaii. Meyer is the son of two professional land surveyors and Craig has won an ESRI SAG Award...talk about two unique perspectives! We touched on how the HI cadastre was established and is maintained, volcanos, shifting techtonic plates, wildfires, monument preservation, and the roles land surveyors can play in disaster management plans! Take more time to educate the public, make sure new surveyors know why they're pushing the buttons, make your community a better place and most importantly, don't be an as*hole! He is the son of a civil engineer and grew up loving surveying. Shannon has built a company that is passionate about not only promoting the A&E industries but also preparing the next generation of land surveyors. Well this was fun! The guys were joined this week by Ms. Jordyn Hjeldness (Jeldness). Jordyn is the epitome of what all young land surveyors should strive to be! She is well educated, has had great mentors, diverse project experiences and is passionate about all things land surveying! The guys were joined during National Surveyors Week and on Global Surveyors Day by the one and only Trent Keenan and his good friend Christian Cernauskas. Trent of course is the President of Diamondback Land Surveying, Creator of Mentoring Mondays, Roundtable Tuesdays and Wisdom Wednesdays, and the driving force behind Get Kids Into Survey - West Coast. Christian, as an experienced writer and videographer, is the Marketing Communications and Outreach Strategist at NCEES. The guys (and Dr. Nik) were joined this week by Rick Smith, Executive Director & Philippe Tissot, Chair of Coastal Artificial Intelligence at Conrad Blucher Institute, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. There is so much to glean from this episode...what a "research institute" actual does, history of CBI, current key initiatives as they relate to surveying & mapping, role CBI plays in education & advancing the geospatial professions, and confirmation that we are living through "the next big thing"! Sam has not only worked with NASA to develop apps for the International Space Station, he is also the CEO & Co-founder of Felt! What is Felt you ask? Only one of the coolest new mapping products on the planet that you probably haven't heard about yet...you're welcome! Felt is without question a better way to work with maps that is powerful enough for GIS Pros, yet easy enough for everyone else to use. As we continue to make maps part of our daily operations just like spreadsheets and a plethora of other online documents, Felt is like the "easy" button for your entire team to collaborate spatially! And yet ANOTHER survey "influencer! The guys were joined this week, fittingly on Terminus Day, by none other than Mr. Davey Edwards. Davey is already a legend in the geospatial world and we were humbled to have this conversation with him. We covered everything from working in the family business, being a TAMU-CC professor, growing up on a farm, working on a "patent correcting" survey for the GLO, the "3 E's of Licensure", to the importance of embryo donation...what a ride!!
