Every digital company that is subscription-based works on the thesis that the marginal costs to add another user is low enough that the business has a strong mechanism to grow and can drive high margins. Sounds nerdy but it has so much to do with how we’re working with theatres to incorporate live digital. We want to get the live digital version of any in-person event in front of as many people as possible because it makes acquiring new ticket buyers/donors/customers incredibly affordable. For the theatre, this provides an incredible opportunity, at the apex of change we are experiencing, to completely rethink how we make theatre-making sustainable.

Every once in a while, we peel the curtain back on how we pulled off our favorite Live Digital experiences - the gear, the setup, the strategy and the glory. Back in January, we were tasked with plugging a livestream into the existing plan for a video capture of a weekend retreat for an association and it was a really cool success. We figured out how to add the livestream without creating too much of a rumpus with the existing A/V teams, we put together a really interesting engagement strategy for the digital audience and we began developing an ongoing livestream strategy for the association. In today’s episode, we’re giving you the blueprint for your own livestreaming success!

The world is a changin’ and we’re noticing a really interesting shift from customer to community in our Live Digital Work. All Together Now 1.0 had customers who want an event that our Live Digital delivers, All Together Now 2.0 saw us creating Live Digital experiences that execute the events and that generate marketing yummyness that can be used to grow who comes to future events. All Together Now 3.0 is the next logical step - we’re building strategies to engage communities who love brands – and, of course, those strategies yield events and marketing.
In order to better understand and define this future, we’re taking it all the way back to Internet 1.0, message boards and flat websites as we track the history of how we interact on the internet.
We also spend a stupid amount of time on the Meisner method of acting training, the brilliance of this season of Barry and Magic the Gathering. We were feeling spicy. 🤷🏼♀️

From Whova, to Zoom, to Maestro to Vimeo to Socio, Hopin, Disco, Bevy and back again, who has as much incredibly useful and unbelievably silly information about the platforms we use for Live Digital than us? NO ONE we tell you! We know more than one person who’s come to us with their eyes crossed, trying to figure out what platform to use for their live digital experiences, so today we’re breaking down a few of them just for you.

We’ll take you through three of the platforms we use most at All Together Now: Zoom, Maestro and Hopin. If you have another platform you’re considering using, chances are we know it, so feel free to reach out about our platform consulting. And as ever, let us know if this helps!

Try to say that three times fast! The big question on our minds this week is how to tame the content machine we’ve become. It’s not a big surprise that we pump out content at a massive clip, given Jess’s background and history – but we’re always working to make sure it’s tied to tangible business outcomes. We’re offering up The Get Together Live as tribute and we hope this convo helps you look at your content strategy a little differently. We track how TGT Live came to be, what we think the opportunity is at hand, how we measure the potential market we could capture (partially as a result of that content) and what next steps are on the board if we feel good about chasing that business in the short, medium and long term.
And..lest you start thinking this is a super serious and businessy episode, we also hit these other select topics:
Late Stage Capitalism
Artists as Oracles
Six Degrees of Extremist Kevin Bacon
The Soft and Cunt Category in Ballroom
Don't @ us, we were feeling weird 😂

We made it through our sophomore year as of this week, so it’s a happy birthday episode! Historically, sophomore year is challenging for new companies and we definitely felt that pain so we decided to talk about the good, bad and the ugly of Year 2. We survived more than a few shifts in customer behavior this year coming out of the pandemic so our conversation swung pretty wildly from feelings to macroeconomics to each of our top three highest highs across the past year.. Feels pretty on-brand for this pod 😂

Hybrid is the topic de jour, and specifically we're wondering if it’s a useless word given there’s no real definition and seems to cause more confusion than it helps. Jess was invited to speak on a panel last week about the State of Hybrid events and inspired by that talk, she and Joe are really digging into their beforetimes definition and how that’s changed across the past two years. We’ve seen so many cool, weird, wildly specific takes on a hybrid event/show in our work, this was a ton of fun to break down.

Poor Music Man, you’ll forever be our punching bag on this podcast. For the record, Jess played Mrs. Paroo at the tender young age of 17 and let us tell you, it was…something. We digress. With a model like “the Netflix for Performance”, do you think there’s the opportunity to rethink a modern day subscription model? We got to wondering what happened if multiple mission-based physical spaces got together, streamed their in-person events and gave you access to it all for your monthly monies. Also we talked Circle Jerk. The show, not the act of - get your head out of the gutter!

Good dear god, platform analytics feel like a nightmare sometimes, a bunch of red and blue lines and silly numbers that don’t feel connected to anything a mere mortal can possibly make useful. But for experiences like The 2022 New York State Crime Victims Vigil (which we just wrapped), audiences can 3x by adding a Live Digital component. Knowing who your digital audience is, how they found you and how engaged they were in your broadcast are all integral tools to help you plan and develop the next engagement and grow your impact, revenue, audience - whatever goals you're aiming for.
Lucky for us noobs (read: Jess) whose eyes cross at the YouTube dashboard, we have a Joe in our lives! He takes us through the analytics from this year's Vigil, makes them human and helps us recognize and understand what this information means for our future plans. Let us know if this helps you as much as it helped us!

Today is the day we stop talking about NFTs like we know anything and let an expert take the stage. Aren’t you proud of us? 🤣 Eric Neal comes to his work in web3 with a strong background in theatre and technology - he’s a Tony-nominated producer and an entrepreneur who built a successful agency before he moved to his current venture - Third Act Digital, the marketplace where the theatre comes to collect. We get into the nitty gritty of NFTs but this conversation is much more about how theatre and technology grow in tandem with each other and how the industry improves along the way.
Episode Topics:
* Joe embraces podcasting
* What the shit actually is an NFT and why does it matter?
* The benefits of NFT for theatre (spoiler, it has to do with broadening audiences)
* Blockchain alternative Hadera Hashgraph and eco-conscious approaches to Web3
* Thinking about technology as a collaborator that can heighten and complement the existing story inside a new platform like web3
* Who should be paying attention to this space

In the wake of the Unofficial Bridgerton Musical winning Best Musical Album at the Grammys, we’re munching over the best and worst of the idea of Recursive Publishing. It can drive the impossible - like the Bridgerton win - when the creative of the video wins the internet and the publishing platforms reward that within the algorithms. But it can also, as we all know from the past few years, propagate bad ideas, bad actors and bad information in the exact same way. The end game could be profitable creator-led businesses (as opposed to platform/tech company-led businesses for creators) which you know we love, and so we ponder how to make it all work.
Episode Topics:
* Recursive Publishing

* Amazon Unionization

* What happens when you break the ability to be in physical space with each other (spoiler alert: concentrate on what it means to be in time with each other)
* What non-profits can take away from our success at building a volunteer army to put the concert on
* Starting with clear goals and building the creative around those

In the ongoing competition of the UK vs US on this podcast, our friends across the pond frequently do a bit better than us on supporting the arts and acknowledging that they are important by financially backing them. But as of this week, get your party hats out, we are catching up! The NYPAL recently opened up applications for their brand spanking new Theatre and Technology Fellowship and we are GOBSMACKED. It’s going to pay someone to use their creativity and the Library’s resources to do a deep dive anywhere in theatre and tech that the Fellow wants to go.
We get to talking about our collaborators that would slay that fellowship, why this bad boy should exist and what it was like the first time Jess tried to watch an archival Broadway recording at NYPAL. It’s a story full of intrigue, microfiche and Patti LuPone. Be warned.

We’ve been throwing around terms willy nilly around here and thought we’d take a beat to talk a bit about what Live Digital means to us, how our clients are using it and why we think the meaning has more to do about what the humans do with the machines than the technology itself.
Listen in for more insight on how Live Digital:
Builds Audiences
Grows Revenue
Deepens Connections across your fans/customers/community
Co-creates Radical Acts of Accessibility
And who should be thinking about playing this space over the next few years.
This is the first in a series of breaking down how we’ve built some of the world’s most innovative Live Digital experiences across the last decade.

Jess and Joe are thrilled to be new members of WXO, the World Experience Organization. Much like us, they are all about collaboration across different sectors for the sake of sharing new ideas and improving experiences of all varieties. This week we are digging deep into one article from them, all about the hierarchy of experiences. Fundamentally, what does it take for an experience to be memorable, or even transformational? We have lots of thoughts about the application of this model to live digital experience specifically, and we'd love to hear yours, too!

Ring of Keys is an awesome non-profit working to connect and advocate for queer women, non-binary and trans people in musical theater, on and off stage. Joe and Jess were so lucky to sit down with Co-Founder of the org, Andrea Prestinario and newly-minted Executive Director, Aislinn Frantz! They told us the beautiful origin story of Ring of Keys and talked about the power and importance of seeing queer bodies and queer voices at work in theater.
