The Ghost Furnace - Episode 142 "Ghost Bomber" In January 1952, a US Airforce B-25 bomber had some sort of issue and ended up in the Monongahela river during rush hour right outside Pittsburgh. Usually when we look at strange events, we are not sure IF a thing even happened, in this case, the plane certainly crashed and two people tragically lost their lives. What is in question, is what happened before the plane had its issues causing the crash and the mystery surrounding the supposed recovery of the aircraft. As is usually the situation, all of the possibilities have their issues and none of them totally make sense. We are joined by our good friend Brendan who helps us wrap our heads around some of the facts, and open questions with the Ghost Bomber of the Monongahela. Here is the Heinz History resource we mention: https://www.heinzhistorycenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/B-25-Report.pdf If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 141 "Belsnickel" On this week's episode we have a bit of a holiday grab bag focused around some lesser known yuletide denizens. Belsnickel occupies an interesting place in PA Dutch folklore, not quite the jolly old elf, and not the demon doling out strict punishment. There is a lot to unwrap with this holiday season and if we just look a little deeper we might find what is typically portrayed as a happy time, the darker sides of our stories tell us about what the real gifts are. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 140 "Commonwealth Canines" On this week's episode we dive back into the strange stories in the Venn diagram of upright canines, dogmen and werewolves. Everytime we look into this area, we find a new perspective and takes on what people might be seeing. Are they just dogs, are they neighbors suffering from lycanthropy, dogmen, out of place animals? Almost all of the answers, even the mundane ones, are curious at their most harmless and terrifying at their most extreme. Here are links to the articles we reference this week. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 139 "Folklore is Born in Different Ways" On this week's episode we look into some more unconventional folkloric stories and their origins. Where and why some of these stories pop up and why they stick around might be due to an underlying truth about the human condition, they might tell us about our cultural threats, or they might just be bad jokes that stick around. The book we reference is "The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends and Their Meanings" by Jan Harold Brunvand If you have any stories or urban legends that come from your spaces? We would love to hear them. You can find us on Instagram and YouTube, or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
Ghost Furnace - Episode 138 "Lake Baikal Swimmers" On this week's episode we head to the other side of the planet to a remote lake which holds mysteries in its clear but deep waters. Legendary creatures, ufo's and aquatic humanoids supposedly call this ancient lake home and may be responsible for more tragic happenings than just scaring fisherman and tourists. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on YouTube and Instagram, or at TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 137 "Cornucopia of Strange" On this week's episode we have a variable horn-o-plenty of weird stories that you've shared with us over the last few days. First up we have an unidentified object over the State College sky. Check out our Instagram for the photos shared with us. Then we head up to New York State to revisit an apparent resolution to a story we covered a few months back about anomalous sounds in a very deep lake. Link: https://www.vice.com/en/article/scientists-finally-solved-the-weird-mystery-of-the-booming-new-york-lake/ We head across the pond thanks to a story shared with us about a possible large cat sighting in Co. Clare Ireland. Here is the original video: https://www.reddit.com/r/animalid/comments/1ok3wev/lion_supposedly_seen_in_the_wild_in_ireland/ And the supposed culprit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHCzcR4vwWI Lastly, we head back to just northeast of State College to cover a bigfoot report that has made quite the buzz in new outlets. Here is the BFRO report we reference: https://www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=79292&fbclid=IwY2xjawN51hhleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETEwUmVadzA3NnVnSmVvV1c1c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHq2gi6BroG4AfUkMGUbw0WQ7HtKeEcolQPYdU3Qj9tODNPxK-d8Cz8zBOsVb_aem_Hk-dMmby0PsaWFR4jqrRPw If you have a story you'd like to share, you can reach out to us on YouTube, Instagram or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 136 "Stage Fright" On this week's episode we welcome Kate to the show! She shares a few stories about her hometown, and some spirits she's come across. Now the title of this episode is a little misleading because one of the elements we cover here is around how spirits, like people, are not as negative as the tv shows and films would have you believe. To the extent they can actually be helpful is something worth highlighting. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 135 "Valley Forge" When you have a location, like Valley Forge, which has such historical and cultural significance, it has to be haunted in one way or another right? Whether it has classical, incorporeal soldiers trying to make it through another day, the spirits of famous figures, footsteps in buildings older than our nation, or simply the everyday haunts which come from day-to-day life. Let alone the spirits of all the people who have come to reverently learn lessons from stewards of the sacred, past and present. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 134 "Like it Happened Yesterday" On this week's episode, we are joined by our good friend Chris to talk about a few topics, one of which is the way ghost hunting technology has influenced the types of stories we tell. Then Chris shares a story that takes place in a junkyard, which is a new setting for us, but decidedly creepy. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on YouTube, Instagram or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 133 "Remote Viewing" On this episode of the Ghost Furnace we welcome back Brian to kick off a conversation around remote viewing. This phenomena has many aspects and is a tough one to pin down, but we cover everything from Vatican technology to the Ghostbusters. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram and YouTube or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - EP 132 "Invisible Gorillas & Weird Bugs" This week we take a look at a book we've referenced on more than one occasion, The Invisible Gorilla. Below is a link to the video we reference for the initial experiment. By focusing on the illusions of attention and memory, we look at how those in particular can impact not only our everyday lives but the study of the paranormal. We use an example of a memory which we have two separate perspectives to illustrate the use of this concept. Plus, Nic plays a good joke on Bond. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 131 "Bube's Tavern" This week we head to one of the oldest breweries in the country. The lagering vaults, ballrooms, guest quarters and manufacturing facilities have seen many family members, patrons, owners and ghost hunters over the years who have enjoyed and loved this place. Some so much they stick around long after closing time. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 130 "Sky Canada Project" This week we look at a fascinating, and remarkably well put together report on the state of UPA reporting in Canada. They do an excellent job laying out the elements in the databases and reporting that work, and what they lack. Then make some very sound recommendations on how we can all benefit from centralized reporting to better study the wide variety of phenomena and bring together the disparate groups to further everyone's understanding. Here is a link to the full report: https://science.gc.ca/site/science/en/office-chief-science-advisor/sky-canada-project/management-public-reporting-unidentified-aerial-phenomena-canada If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 129 "Hell Money" On this week's episode we are reunited to chat around some feedback from the last few weeks we wanted to share with everyone. Then Nic has a story from the other side of the globe which sounds eerily familiar to stories we have spoken about before. But what are hungry ghosts and what does hell money have to do with this? We'll learn together. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 128 "The Legendary & Historic Johannes Kelpius w/ Timothy Grieve-Carlson" On this week's episode we talk with author Timothy Grieve-Carlson about Johannes Kelpius. This is a conversation I've been wanting to have since first reading his book "American Aurora: Environment and Apocalypse in the Life of Johannes Kelpius" last year. We look at both the historic and legendary versions of Kelpius and attempt to parse what we can learn from both. Timothy has two upcoming events you all might be interested in. First we will be giving a presentation titled "The Wizard of the Wissahickon: The Life and Legacy of Johannes Kelpius" at the Friends of the Wissahickon at the Wissahickon Valley Park on September 17th at 6pm. Then the Ephrata Cloister Museum, who you can reach out to for details, will host his talk on an early American poltergeist case at 7pm on September 18th. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 127 "Thwarted" Due to some unexplainable technical difficulties, we were unable to record the UAP related show we had planned. However, we wanted to make sure you all got a full length episode to help get you through the dog days of summer. So, we have a compilation of three Dr. PA episodes which were recorded around the same time in 2020. These are three of my favorites and all have elements we have touched on during previous Ghost Furnace episodes. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 126 - "The Seneca Drums" On this episode we head to the beautiful finger lakes of update New York. Among the picturesque scenery we have the setting for a bonafide scientific mystery, the Seneca Drums. These unaccounted for booms are labeled as everything from sky quakes, seismic activity, geologic gas, distant thunder and everything in between. But what is the source of the loud noises that pierce the otherwise tranquil landscape? Scientific conjecture seems to be coming up short. Or, does this deep lake hold even more secrets? Quick update for everyone, we have lots of episodes in the works and will be back to our normal schedule shortly.
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 125 "Big Cat Bonanza" The only thing better than a cat is a big cat right? Well, that might be the case the majority of the time, but not so much if you are a resident, farmer or sheep in England. On this episode, we look at the big cat phenomena that has been developing and shifting over the last hundred years, or longer, in England's countryside. The unique element to this apparent cryptid is the scope and depth of the evidence, stories and investigations which have taken place over the years. Attacks, sightings and physical evidence leave a lot to comb through. What do you think is staking the moors of Old Albion? If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram and YouTube, or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 124 "Brinton Lodge" This week we have our latest edition to our unofficial "Haunted taverns of Pennsylvania" series. The Brinton Lodge has an impressive history regarding both its context in local affairs and as a seasoned paranormal hotspot. When you find a place like this that checks so many of the typical boxes, does that signal that it is legitimately haunted, or that it's merely collected every trope our collective consciousness can throw at it?
