Description
Welcome to the Good Music Show with Danny and Julius! Each episode they will give each other an album or playlist based around a theme, then talk about the music and artists that make it. They'll cover a wide spread of artists that they care deeply about: from 2Pac to Willie Nelson, John Prine to Donna Summer, Ray Charles to Future. Keeping an open mind to new styles allows Danny and Julius, as well as listeners, the opportunity to step out of individualized music bubbles and find new music to love.

Content warning: this episode contains lengthy discussions about death and drug use, and a brief mention of suicide. On this episode we tackle two albums we've never heard before... until we listened to them for the first time for this episode! That's right, instead of perfectly curating a classic album for a prompt, today we are spinning some albums we've been meaning to check out but have not heard a single song from. First we discuss Julius's pick. As a big fan of the Stooges, they never g...
If you're a listener and you have either one of our personal phone numbers, you have a special power to get us to spend an extra 40 minutes after recording to get us to talk about something music related! Today, after a recording session (main ep coming soon!) we do a quick overview of recent Tiny Desk Concerts that we enjoyed! First talk about a close personal friend of Danny, Rico Nasty, who recently cemented her status as a genuine Tiny Desker after previously being an At-Home Tiny Desker....
Pre-recorded from Washington D.C. it's the Good Music Show! Today we are talking all about NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concerts. We each picked 2 videos to illustrate what we love about the series: one classic and one hidden gem. After discussing our general thoughts and a brief history of the Tiny Desk, we get into our classics which are among the highest viewed of the series. We nerd out about the suave coolness and skill of Anderson .Paak and his backing band the Free Nationals. Then we ge...
On today's bonus, we pay tribute to two music giants that passed away in the same week at the same age. We get into Sly Stone and the excellent playlist that Julius made to pay tribute to the wonderful music of Sly and the Family Stone. From there we discuss the impact of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys on us and the music industry as a whole. We'll compare and contrast how their careers ended up and their relationships with the bands they lead. Before we leave we catch up on a couple of nota...
Continuing our review of 2024, today we discuss our picks for 2024 albums of the year, ie the albums we are most excited to talk about. It just so happens we picked albums that we both already loved before embarking on this 2024 episode journey! First we'll do a little rapid fire album discussion pulling from each of our 2024 Album Topsters (see link below). We revisit our thoughts on the much discussed Brat and Alligator Bites Never Heal, as well as two underrated rap albums Dark Times and P...
We are back after some time away to talk 2024! Today, we've got two 5-song playlists to dig into, next week we talk 2 albums. We swap songs and talk about what stood out to us during a great year for music. You can also check out our mid-year review we did in season 1, but this episode we take a step back and get the big picture a few months after the debris has settled. We'll talk about Danny's country takes, Julius's in depth thoughts on the Drake vs Kendrick beef, the state of rap musi...

Brrr... it's time for everyone's favorite season to have its day in court on the Good Music Show. Today we discuss two albums that make us think of winter. We start with Danny's pick which continues his trend of finding a song that deals with a season, and making the case why the album its on also represents that season. When he heard Song for a Winter's Night by Gordon Lightfoot - a legendary folk singer-songwriter from Canada - he thought it was the perfect non-Christmas song. This album is...

It's Dilla Time this week on the Good Music Show. On this episode, Julius leads us in a discussion on the legendary producer/rapper J Dilla, who tragically only has one 3 album run to talk about. We'll cover his debut solo album, his most famous album that arrived 3 days before his passing, and what should be considered his final album even though it was finished and released posthumously. Dilla made a huge impact on music in general, so of course we'll talk about the many projects that he wo...
It's been a minute since our last proper episode, so thanks for bearing with us! We've been hard at work on two special episodes that break our normal format. Introducing "3 Album Runs." We'll devote a full episode to dive into 3 albums from one artist, discussing the music, the context in which they came out, and connecting the dots of how the music progressed over time. Today, Danny takes the lead on a series of 3 albums from the Boss: Bruce Springsteen. This run takes place in the 80's wh...
Hello all, I am writing this a few weeks after we recorded to say this is the last episode dropping this year. Do not despair, we will be coming out strong into the new year with our 3 album-run deep dive episodes that we promised in the preview. But I just want to thank everyone who gave us a chance in our first year. We appreciate everyone who told us were listening, you know who you are - please message us "potato salad" if you read this! More season 2 is to come with new episodes planned ...
Part 2 is here! Our resident film expert Julius dives right into their list, which is full of great music in addition to mesmerizing films that feature it. From the Lynchian "Blue Velvet" to the short but perfect party film "Lovers Rock," you will be more than satisfied checking out any of the films on this list! Songs/Movies Discussed "In Dreams" - Roy Orbison - from Blue Velvet (1986) - dir David Lynch "Love and Happiness" - Al Green - from Menace II Society (1993) dir. Allen and Alb...
You know the drill, Danny and Julius talked for way too long and now the episode is split into 2 parts! It's like the new Wicked movie! Topical, eh? First up is Danny's playlist. This playlist tells the story of Danny's youth where he grew to appreciate movies enough to want to study them in college. Of course Julius provides some excellent film criticism, particularly to a mutual favorite film from 2016, Moonlight. Songs/Movies Discussed "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" - Ramones - from School of ...
"It's kind of a cosmic gumbo, it almost moves to the beat of jazz" - Santa Claus on the film Detective Crashmore What would cosmic gumbo be in music form? Today we answer that question with two fantastic albums. One that will blow your mind with its insane instrumentation and send you on a journey through the afterlife. The other will have you moaning the blues and rocking along with a cosmic preacher delivering a sermon about the state of the world in 1971. Both albums are made up of a va...
Recorded in early October, we reflect on two recent losses in the music world. The one that was most recent was Kris Kristofferson, so we paid tribute to a one-of-a-kind legend that made waves in the world of movies, and even bigger ones in music. As we reflected on recent losses, Julius wanted to talk about the far too soon loss of Rich Homie Quan, an Atlanta hip-hop great who changed the game both solo and collaborating with Young Thug. We had to take a few weeks off, but we are back with an episode that is almost as good as the music featured in it - AND THE MUSIC IS VERY GOOD! The idea was to pitch songs that should be used in a sample. Such a fun thought experiment that we thought we should focus on a specific instrument so we could make this a series. So today we present the drums edition of this playlist-based concept. First we'll get into Danny's playlist, featuring 8 songs made up of 2-song pairings that exist in si...
On today's bonus episode, we'll dive deeper into what we love about De La Soul's music - Danny gets a taste of Radiohead - and we talk about the XXL Brainrot Cypher. Kicking off the season is a super-sized seasonal episode about fall! First up - the second album from rap group De La Soul. We'll talk about the variety of styles across the album, threaded together by the signature De La Soul charm and wisdom. This self-aware and self-referential group was a big part of Julius's back-to-school fall world, and now Danny has become a dedicated customer of the De La Donut Store. Then we go back into the Willie-verse and play around amongst the stars. This vib...
