In this episode, The worlds foremost moosicologists, Beaner and Weevil travel down the rabbit-hole to the wonderland of music from their youth. Delving ever deeper to pin-point specific songs that profoundly altered their way of thinking musically. Not just as fans, but as the very beginnings of their thinking, playing, writing, singing(I think you get it) as musicians. They also ask an important question...What the heck is going on with Weevil (aka Undercover Steve) and his fascination with girly-girl-girl music-Beaner is perplexed!. There's even a segment here where Beaner demonstrates a point or 2 on the bass guitar (hold your ears). Not to be out done, Weevil demonstrates his prowess on the acoustic guitar (hold your breakfast). So sit back and let the diabolic duo take you on a journey back...back...back through the moments that forged your musical schemas (enjoy it with a caffeinated beverage for added sensation).
Being that pt 1 was completely hi-jacked by the Debargument on why terrestrial radio sucks, we forgot we actually had other stuff to play & moo about. So moo-ving on to part 2, Beaner and Weevil cue up some Yoko-just for laughs, try their hands (and voices) at folk songs and delve deeply into the masterpiece that is Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Brain Salad Surgery gem-Karnevil 9 3rd Impression...perhaps TOO deeply as they wind up in a perplexing discussion about man, the rise of technology, and finally God...Emerson, Lake & Palmer will do that to ya! Sip a hot bev and enjoy!
We FINALLY live up to our name heh! In this episode Weevil comes to the studio at Thanksgiving time bearing gifts of fine Weevil's Evil Bean Brew and wishes for a happy anniversary for Beaner and the Mrs. He enters with grand plans for a holiday weekend discussion and a time of reminiscing about the music and memories that B & W shared back in the early and old days of their long time friendship...unfortunately, what he gets is an argument!...a debate...or a debargument if you will, about New York radio and the sad (or is it inevitable??) state it has morphed into...take a listen and perhaps a side! Remember it's not who wins or who loses...it's who cares!
One of lifes' epic tragedies is that Lennon & McCartney never had the chance to get back together again. So we wont let that happen to the other great musical team, Beaner & Weevil! We return to the Studio in Paramus from whence we came, to chew the cudd of Cheap Tricks amazing Sgt Peppers Live show available on DVD. An incredible celebration of the original Beatles album performed by the band and guests for its 40th anniversary, done in 2007 with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. If you are a CHeap Trick fan and you DONT have this DVD....SHAME ON YOU!!!! Listen here and We will show you why you should be ashamed! And then there's the Hanson Brothers thing... you think Im kiddin dont ya?!!? Listen and find out
Well, Show # 4 is officially up and running. Here, Beaner and Weevil discuss the ups, downs. ins and outs of cover songs. Only "cover songs" as a topic can explain blabbering about Dolly Parton's version of Stairway To Heaven, Linda Rondstadt, Clutch and The Dickies in the same show! It's also understood that cows will be cows. Weevil's field work with Clutch comes in handy here as we pick his cattle brain clean to uncover what we can about the Maryland boys. Oh dear....Rush makes yet another appearance. Who could say no to those Canadians...they're so nice. Although, this time it's their Prog Rock peers, Yes that get the spotlight as we re-visit Paul Simon's worst nightmare...Yes's over extended, over played, self indulgent yet artistically scrumptious version of America. Simon Says please don't cover my songs anymore. Get your snacks and beverages in position, think cover song thoughts and enjoy yourself silly. We did...
In Show 3, Beaner and Weevil talk about "The Rise and Fall of Aerosmith"! I mean seriously, compare ROCKS or DRAW THE LINE to anything they've done on their "Permanent Vacation" and its obvious when they stopped writing their own stuff.
SHOW #2 up The Great Debate starts fittingly with Weevil's tyrannical view that SLAYER should be more represented in Pro Football. Especially in light of the STEELERS awesome crushing defeat of the Arizona Pigeons and it just takes off from there. Rap, Ratt and Hair Metal's expulsion from the onslaught of Grunge, to Metallica's fall from grace are discussed along with plenty of other topics. Joe Perry out Aerosmithing Aerosmith in 1980, RUSH and the greatest instrumental ever recorded, Van Halen and Nugent are just some of the things He and Beaner discuss as The Great Debate goes on.
What started out as a typical half-assed conversation after Beaner's wedding, turned into our first attempt at ye olde radio-talk show style conversation about what we have loved all our lives...music. The topic being bantered about was my(Weevil) ignorance of the effect The Beach Boys album Pet Sounds had on the Beatles and their recording of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. It's a little short for us, but it was pretty much an experiment that turned out to be immensely enjoyable to do.
