The Groove Collection Podcast

Around Us is a DJ / producer duo from Amsterdam who are making serious waves since 2018. Working diligently day in, day out, growing and developing their style. Respected by their colleagues and admired by the people who consume their music on the dance floor. This is Around Us. The boys quietly joined forces, without fanfare or noise and they produced since that time a lot of productions. Today in 2021, all the key players know Around Us. With the world’s top DJ’s such as Sasha and Hernan Cattaneo playing their productions, the future looks bright for Around Us. Sasha hammered their "Absentis" track and Cattaneo regularly aired productions such as Sleeping Blue, Bamboo, 8 Steps and United in his DJ sets and podcasts. In their own words, Around Us is “about melody”. Jan said “We look for strong melodies”. However, we do not label ourselves progressive house or melodic techno. Gaby has a slightly sunnier melodic vibe than me, I tend to go more darker and stronger in my melodies. Above all, Around Us always remains deep”. With a release list way too long to fit into this bio, stand out tracks have surfaced on some of the world’s lead- ing labels such as TRAUM, Mango Alley, Manual Music, Iconyc, Magnitude Recordings and Click Records. By the end of summer 2020 the duo managed to release over 50 productions! With true dedication to music, these guys are set to continue making waves further into 2022. How we know "The Groove Collection" and Jerry? Jerry was a regular visitor on my panama parties where I was resident dj for the john digweed, Dave Seaman, Sander Kleinneberg and Sasha evenings. From one thing came another and we spoke several times about music and became friends. After a year or so he had a bookings agency, GC Bookings, where he asked us to be part of and so we did. De website, the groove collection, was were i met likeminded producers and djs like 16 bit lolitas etc on the forum and that is why i always have love for the groove collection because it all started in the early days where the groove collection was part of. Jan aka Schaamteloos dj’s, Analog Effect, Around Us   Since the start of my DJ career in 1990 the progressive sound find its way throughout the years and I always heard the name Jerry van Schie in the scene. I never had the change to meet him or speak to him, but we’ve cross paths many times. I knew his face but wasn’t aware at that time he was Jerry. But what I know is that he was a true pioneer in the dutch progressive scene and, like me, a helpful guy that always thought about putting others in the spotlights and I know many dutch dj’s and producers owe a lot to him. I first met Jerry back in 2008 shortly after I had signed my first release on fellow Dutch man Eelke Kleijn's record label 'Outside The Box Music'.  We exchanged many emails about what my plans were for the future and Jerry assured me that if i kept up the drive and was proving my efforts in the scene that he would come back to me with an opportunity.  Fast forward to late 2009 and that's when Jerry ask me to join the Groove Collection agency. For the next few years I attended ADE as preforming and got to play in some the best Clubs there and met so my good people all thanks to Jerry giving me that opportunity. We built up a good relationship with him and his beloved Sherley and always met up when we were over in Amsterdam. Jerry was a great mentor for me and I am forever grateful to him for helping me in my career. It was an honour to be asked to put together a mix to mark the 5 year passing of Jerry. He was much loved by many people inside and outside the music scene, and we shared a wealth of good times. We still miss him today. I've picked some tracks that represent the many nights we DJéd together, I would mostly open with techy tracks before Jerry took the vibe more melodic and progressive, tracks from producers Jerry loved such as Guy J and Khen. The mix finishes with a really emotional track at the end (It's even called The Bright End). Thank you all for listening to this mix and I hope it brings back some happy memories of Jerry. This is the foundation of the artistic career of Graziano Raffa, Italian born DJ and Producer and Hernan Cattaneo’s right hand in their Sudbeat imprint. Founder of "The Groove Collection" Jerry van Schie started mixing dance music at the age of thirteen in 1980. Back then he was a big fan of the Italo disco sound. He recorded his mixes on cassette-tape and the cassettes became popular among friends. When housemusic started to get traction in Holland Jerry also collected records and made great mixes.  More and more people wanted the mixes on tape, so we decided to create a collection of mixtapes named "The Groove Collection"  After thirty tapes we switched to cd's and the hands-logo was born. "My relationship with The Groovecollection started almost 10 years ago when I was asked to join the GC roster, along with several friends. Jerry was immensely kind, passionate, and proactive in his approach to supporting and growing a healthy, vibrant, scene. After ADE 2019 i saw a video passing by on Youtube https://youtu.be/I6oOoehtexs It was a short clip of the long video I recorded and edited during the Watt boat party with Hernán Cattáneo and Nick Warren. First reaction was, hé they rip my video to promote their track?, witch is a great track off course. I contacted the guys from Sound Avenue to applause them for using my video 😉  Chatting online with Dominique (Madloch) about music I found out that he is a longtime Groove Collection forum-member and very nice guy. We keept contact frequently during this crazy year and told him about the GC podcast. He was so enthusiastic about it that I asked him to do the final episode of 2020. Enjoy this very special mix. This month its again a very special one, a true friend and musical specialist  Eelke Kleijn. Enjoy the mix! Eelke Kleijns story how he knew Jerry: Jerry and I met through Peter van Hal. I was just starting to make music at the time, being 17 or 18. Peter advised me to meet up with Jerry and perhaps do some music together. He was already DJing a lot at the time and had a very good idea of how he wanted his music to sound, whereas I was just getting into the whole thing and didn’t really get all of those things yet. We hit it off immediately and became good friends. He introduced me to parties like ‘Earth’ at the Melkweg and DJs that played there. We worked on music together on a regular basis, and I have really good memories of being in the studio together and having a lot of fun. When Jerry started his label I was one of the first people that got involved as well. I remixed one of Kosmas Epsilon’s tracks for Groove Collection, and I also became involved in the mastering. In the years after that, Jerry was busy with the label and I was busy with my music. Sometimes we spoke a few times a day, and at other times we didn’t see each other for months. But whenever I ran into Jerry, it was always good, like old times. The October is normaly a very exiting dance music month with the Amsterdam Dance Event. Now is 2020 a very difficult year for the music industry and there will be no normal ADE. In 2015 we organised the last Groove Collection on a Boat during ADE with dj's Guy Mantzur, Dimitri, Eelke Kleijn, Jaap Ligthart, Olivier Weiter, Miss Melera and off course Jerry van Schie. Going back in time, when I think about The Netherlands the first person that comes to my mind is Jerry van Schie. I met him in the early 2000 when I started playing clubs & festivals in Amsterdam and he soon introduced me to his dutch friends and producers and he made sure to really quick to make me feel part of the group. I was very honoured when Remco asked me for the Groovecollection Podcast. In the good old days of “progressive house”, the years when GU was leading, Sasha and Digweed the masters in disguise and Mark Zuckerberg was still in elementary School, the Groovecollection forum was an important progressive platform from the Netherlands. Jerry was responsible for running it and as a progressive artist I of course was a member of the forum. I met Jerry back in the days and we immediately had a connection through music but also with our 2nd passion; Snooker. The Groovecollection was important for me as a platform and I’m still very grateful for Jerry’s support. Reviewing my albums and singles, playing at the Groovecollection evenings and also doing podcasts back then, I became a true member of the GC family. Later I joined the Groovecollection Booking agency and I remember playing at Jerry’s housewarming party (the whole day? ;)) right before my Burn Out period. While I was suffering health problems Jerry was still important for me. He gave me the chance to get some rest by letting me play Snooker weekly for free in Spijkenisse where he was doing his thing at the local Snooker club. So Jerry was one of few I still hang around with during this period. While he teached me Snooker we discussed and listened to music and talked about other things in life. Well, we all know what happened after that and while wiping a tear away I write this story down, already wondering if it’s not getting too personal. Jerry we love you! I got introduced to Jerry somewhere around 1997 probably. I knew Remco and he was the one who introduced me to Jerry at the infamous Nighttown venue in Rotterdam. We hit it off immediately as we soon found out we shared the same passion for music. Jerry made a series of tapes called “The Groove Collection”which really spoke to me on many musical levels. It was also around that time that I became the booker of Extrema and because of that I got involved on a deeper level in the musicscene in Holland. Late 1999 I released my first label, Deep records where I displayed a outspoke taste for what was called Progressive Housemusic. Jerry was in many ways involved in that. Whenever I got send something interesting by a producer he would be the first I would go to for advice as his taste of music was impeccable. One label became two, and two became more over the later years and always there would be Jerry to go to. Jerry was not a man of many words and somethimes we could spend an hour in the same room without talking and let the music do it for us. I remember holidays on Ibiza where we would rent a big villa with our friends and endulge ourselves in beach and nightlife. Great times! One day he came to me as he wanted to start his own label also so I helped him setting The Groove Collection up. And when it was time for me to go and leave the musicscene it was Jerry who continued my labels, who else?  This mix is pretty much an oldskool mix. A collection of records that ment a lot for jerry and myself. Some of the records come from my own labels, or Jerry’s. By no means I see myself as a dj. Jerry was one and a damn good one. But for this mix it is not really important as this month it is already 4 years ago since Jerry left us, way too early. Think of him quite often and with great pleasure, hope you do the same if you happened to know him. Enjoy Life! My friend Jerry van Schie's brain child The Groove Collection started out as a forum for the progressive house community a long long time ago, in a time when we didn't have Myspace, Facebook or anything else. Social media avant la lettre as you will :) It expanded with a podcast series, bookings agency and record label throughout the years. After Jerry's passing, his brother Remco van Schie made sure the podcast legacy lasted, and invested to keep the archives online. Recently he started asking friends of Jerry to contribute a fresh guest mix for the series. This month it was my turn, and I decided to give him the recording of the set I've played at the Warehouse Stream Marathon a few weeks  

Roger Boersma (The New Scientist) is friend from The Groovecollection family and a musical friend of Jerry. Roger has been around in the world of progressive house since he was a little kid.
