The Rwanda genocide is one of the most horrifyingly tragic and shocking massacres in history. However, what made this genocide so horrifying is not only the magnitude in which lives were lost but the roles the international community, media, and government played in this injustice. Or is it? We’ve only changed provincial governments four times since becoming a province in 1905, we’ve been the birthplace of many parties (like Social Credit) and our voting habits don’t often seem to have much of a relationship to what’s going on in the rest of the country. The course will cover everything you need to know to easily follow provincial politics in Alberta. What powers do provincial governments actually have? What is the relationship between Alberta's government, municipalities and the federal government? Why do Albertans vote the way they do? Other topics include, provincial sales tax, Daylight Saving Time, equalization, and energy policy. By completion of this course, successful students will be able to: Identify the most important issues in Alberta provincial politics, some historical and more background in nature, some more topical. Discuss Alberta provincial politics. Paul Fairie has been a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary in political science since 2010. Paul is also a data scientist at Centrality Data Science in Calgary, and a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail where he tries to make political science research accessible to the general public. Utilizing her perfect German accent and Aryan appearance, Marthe posed as a German nurse desperately trying to obtain word of a fictional fiancé. At the Calgary Institute for the Humanities Dr. Jack Lucas focused his research on two particular reforms relevant to discussions of Canadian democratic politics today. The first is electoral reform. Mini-games, fabulous prizes, food and drink specials, etc. Teams of up to 8 people.   Monday, January 14   WE WERE CHILDREN - NFB FILM SCREENING We Were Children is a 2012 Canadian documentary film about the experiences of First Nations children in the Canadian Indian residential school system. The film recounts the experiences of two residential school survivors: Lyna Hart, who was sent to the Guy Hill Residential School in Manitoba at age four, and Glen Anaquod, who was sent to the Lebret Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan. We Were Children combines interviews with the two with dramatic recreations of their experiences. The evening will include a film showing followed by a talking circle.
