This week we move into the beginnings of China’s dynastic period where rulers began favoring birthright over merit – and the consequences will be almost immediately apparent. Spheres of domination, intrafamiliar betrayal, and tangled alliances are the markers of the second portion of the Spring and Autumn period, called the Age of Encroachments. All of this leading to the major powers of the Zhou Empire to engage in decades-long draw out proxy-wars along their borders... all leading toward war outright and the near-destruction of Chu by a new player from the southeast, Wu. The transition from the Spring and Autumn to the Warring States Period is, all in all, an eight decade process. But the major event that would shape the conflict to come is the civil war that would destroy the pre-eminent power of the 6th century BCE Zhou Empire, and result in the total breakup of the State of Jin into three of the seven soon-to-be warring states: Han, Wei, and Zhao. The form of divination described here is actually scapulimancy (burning bones, primarily animal scapula but other parts as well based upon the species used, and examining the cracks formed for patterns) not pyromancy (the ancient Greek practice of staring into fires in an attempt to see the future).

Torture to listen to. Despite fascinating content, speakers are stumbling, hemming-and hawing, peppering their speech with silences, tentative in the extreme, unpithy and non-fluent. Redo it, made fluent, pithy and confident.

Over ten years ago, my brother had given a set of audio CDs he had purchased from the library called ' the long Marche.' Their might have been eleven CDs. Many were damaged and kept slept skepping but I patiently listened to it all. IT WAS GREAT. It is a great but very sad history. But what history isn't? I LOVE YOUR SHOW, it is GREAT.

I have developed a genuine affection for Chris Stewart's podcast The History of China, now that I've made it to episode 41. It's a massive undertaking. The perspective is broad and challenges myths and legends without diminishing their fascination and insights. A magnificent presentation of human nature with beauracratic records that stretch back thousands of years. Literally. Talk about historical resources! Several Cleopatras, at least two Caligulas, Alexander the Greatlets by the dozen and emperors, emperors, emperors! But Mr. Stewart's voice is pleasant and he loves history as story and he tells a heck of a tale. I'm going to Patreon to support his efforts. The History of China is a generous, quite enjoyable offering and merits generosity in return. Thanks, man. I do plan on going on to episode 200 something...the list grows longer, the longer I listen...Happy Holidays!

History? Who cares about which king succeeded which. Nothing about art, technology, society, science, exploration, architecture, philosophy, democratisation...
