In this interview I talk to David Weston, who spent a very long career in Shakespeare's plays. He was Ian McKellen's understudy in a world tour of King Lear. He kept a diary during that time which was published as Covering McKellen, which he followed up with Covering Shakespeare. I do some fangirling, and we chat about his career. The new season begins! In this episode we take a high speed review of ballet history covering figures like Enrico Cecchetti, Marie Taglioni, Louis XIV, and Fanny Elssler.
This episode covers the post-West Side Story story from the Broadway production to the first film. In it we meet Chita Rivera, David Winters, and Rita Moreno, as well as a few others. The story covers "Gypsy", the death of Oscar Hammerstein II, and the film's production.
Welcome to our multi-character episode! Next week we'll be talking about the production, but first I need to introduce you to a few more people; book writer Arthur Laurents, set designer Oliver Smith, and producer Hal Prince.
I had the immense privilege to talk to Liza Gennaro, the daughter of "West Side Story" co-choreographer Peter Gennaro. We chatted about her father's work, how she moved from being a Broadway dancer to working as an academic, and we (respectfully) dunked on Jerome Robbins. I also tell a cute story about my mum.
Learn about the *very* early career of Stephen Sondheim If you want to learn more about his later works, particularly his music I'd recommend the following videos: - The Musical Moral of Into The Woods - YouTube and - How the Music Spoils Sweeney Todd (and why that's a good thing) - YouTube Both by the YouTube channel Sideways
Learn about Leonard Bernstein and his peers, ranging from George Gershwin to Betty Comden and Adolf Green. Also hear the story of how Fancy Free became On The Town
Episode 2 covers Jerome Robbins and a selection of the other dancers and choreographers who shaped the world he chassed his way into.
Welcome to season 2 - all about 'West Side Story' 'West Side Story' opened on Broadway in 1957 and remained in the cultural zeitgeist ever since. You may know 'West Side Story', but you might not know just how culturally pervasive the show was, and continues to be.
The final episode of our first season! In this episode we discuss the legacy of the musical Oklahoma!
