Description

Welcome to the Holderness Family Podcast!

On Facebook and YouTube we are known as The Holderness Family. We make those silly songs and skits with our kids, but on this podcast, it's just us... the real us.

The non-Christmas-jammies-us, the why-can't-my-socks-be-on-the-kitchen-counter-us (Penn) the why-do-I-have-to-go-outside-and-talk-to-people-us (Kim).

On this podcast, we will share the real-life ups and downs of living together, working together, raising kids together, in what we hope is a funny and entertaining way.

We will be taking questions that we are likely unqualified to answer (absolutely unqualified to answer) but we are hoping that the show will make all of your beautiful families realize you're not alone.

You're not alone. We are all a hot mess... a HolderMess.

Making Some Serious Changes

In last week’s podcast, we shared an update on Penn’s father’s health. He’s declining into dementia and we’re having to make all sorts of grown-up decisions we don’t feel qualified, or ready, to make. Watching someone suffer will cause you to do a double take on your own existence. Over the past week, Penn and I have been questioning everything from our careers to how we numb ourselves when times get tough. So, we are doing our own version of #Stoptember to cut back on the things that may be elevating our anxiety and numbing our emotions. : Penn, Kim, Lola, and Penn Charles Holderness create original music, parodies, and Vlogs for YouTube and Facebook to poke fun of themselves and celebrate the absurdity in circumstances most families face in their day to day life. They published "Christmas Jammies" in December 2013 and life hasn't been the same. Since then, their popular parodies, "All About That Baste", "Baby Got Class," and original music "Snow Day" have received national news coverage. Penn, the Dad, took a chance and left his job as a news anchor to join his wife Kim, the Mom, at their video production and digital marketing company, Greenroom Communications, LLC. Lola and Penn Charles are always happy, respectful and eat all of their vegetables (that last sentence is a lie).
Penn is dealing with some heavy things right now, so we explain why the usual “golden retriever” isn’t on the podcast today. We’re sure many of you have dealt with similar situations and encourage you to share your stories with us. Follow the journey on Instagram: @theholdernessfamily Thank you for being here! Sleep is a thing in our family. Personally, I don’t do it well. It causes me great anxiety even when I go to bed. But sleep is so important to mental health, especially mine. In order to do the snooze better, we took a deep dive into our sleep issues with a fancy guest. Dr. Amanda Seavy is a licensed psychologist and founder of Clarity Psychologist Wellness. She also struggles with sleep, which makes her the perfect guest for today’s show. If you’re like me and struggle with sleep, or if your partner or kids are having difficulties with sleep, give this podcast episode a listen. From melatonin to behavioral therapy - we chat about it all and hopefully discuss a tip or two that helps you. Sweet dreams! Can you help me with one of my homework assignments? I am passionate about SO many things right now - book, board game, luggage and more! Will you tell me what you’d like to see from us by filling out this super easy, quick survey? Thanks so much! “This year is gonna be different!” Do you say that every year? We certainly do. Our new school year resolutions may sound like… Mornings are going to be cool, calm and collected. Homework is going to manageable. Snacks and sports and everything in between will be a success!  Sound familiar? To help our kids (and help our marriage), we are making a new type of list for school year resolutions based on the feedback, tips and advice we’ve received from past podcast episodes, such as our show with Dr. Emily King and our counselor. Our goal is to make the school year run smoothly for our kids, but also give Penn and I more opportunities and time to be happy. I’ve mentioned a certain book in the past two episodes, so if you have a teenage girl, I highly recommend that you read this for an awesome homework assignment: https://amzn.to/2HsWCu3 Can you help me with one of my homework assignments? Body image issues and children can be tricky. Body image issues with teenagers girls...beyond tricky. I needed help making sure my daughter is body confident, so I called Dr. Emily King. Penn and I share some experiences and concerns with her on the podcast this week. It is a serious topic (with a serious disclaimer), but we think you will enjoy it, have a laugh and walk away with a great, new insight. This was good! My husband and I have a code word for Mommy Daddy time, and yes we schedule it! For sure, kids are not the #1 priority in our marriage. But every marriage is different, so you gotta find what works for you 💗

Rachel Morris funny my wife and I just had a weekend without the kid, and my wife just absolutely loved it. We love our son but it's nice to have some alone time. He def is very high up on the priority list for us though, but doesn't mean we don't want a weekend to ourselves once and awhile.

This was a super interesting podcast about analyzing dreams! My reoccurring dream is weird..... I dream that I'm going to the bathroom, usually in a public place, and the stall walls are so low that everyone can see me sitting on the toilet. This dream occurs sometimes every few months and sometimes it can be a few years before I dream it again. I think I first had it as a teenager; I'm in my 30's now. I've had the teeth falling out on and it always freaks me out! I dream about babies a lot too. Like last night, I dreamed that a friend I knew a long time ago was having a baby. I visited her and was about to tell her the my non-drugged delivery was excruciating but her dad cut me off and I changed my word to exhilarating. (what?!) Then I went to the nurses desk, picked up a tiny dark haired baby from off the counter and turned to walk to her room....and then I woke up. I never got to her room.

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate this episode and y'all's honesty about it. This was a real eye opener and helpful! One of my favorite speakers says "Facebook is nothing but comparing your B game with everyone else's highlight real". So true. Thanks Holderness fam! I love you guys!!

Just listened to the podcast about Ruby! I have been there!!!! Right where Kim is (Funny, my name is Kim, too!) Have had all the feelings and all of the comments too! I have been too ashamed to even talk about this for the last 10 years because of everyone else's obvious opinions. I was in the "You took this dog on, you are to love her until she dies, no matter what the situation." camp until this happened. We did EVERYTHING! I did all the behavior training, I drove over an hour and a half away 3 times a week for private training, just to "fix" the protective situation, I became a hermit to do everything to "save" her. But I finally had to give up, she was getting MORE protective the more aware I became, she felt she needed to protect MORE. We had a 6 foot fence she hadn't jumped over, simply because she hadn't tried it yet. We had little kids in our neighborhood that she reacted to every time they screamed. I couldn't not protect them, her and my family ALL...THE...TIME anymore. I didn't want her leaving our family to be a traumatic, hurried, hostile affair as she was dragged off to be put down for biting someone. By adopting her out to a specific, "RIGHT" atmosphere with the help of professionals, I was saving my family from trauma as much as possible, saving her life and saving my sanity. YOU GUYS ARE HEROES for talking about this!!!!! You are putting Ruby's love and health ahead of your own hurt. My Sam needed to be an only dog in a house without little kids. She got that and stopped being "on guard" all the time. She could FINALLY relax. We are happier, she is happier, her new mom is happier! THIS SUCKS! but it WILL PASS. Loving her enough to put her in a situation that she won't possibly hurt someone and then get put down, is LOVING HER! PENN AND KIM ARE MY HEROES!!!

Having your kids cook is the best idea. I have a 12, 13, and 16 year old. I went on strike from cooking last summer. They cooked dinner almost everyday all summer. During the school year they are still each cooking at least 1 night a week. Best parenting win for me! They also do all the dishes. At first it was hard to step back and not take over, now they are possibly more capable than me in the kitchen.

This is the first time I have listened to an interview with Candace Payne, and I adore her! "Choose Joy" and "Gratitude In All Things" are my mantra, so I really felt so relatable to her when she was talking about cotton candy clouds and joy. Thank you for this Penn and Kim. Love y'all!

it's not about having high or low expectations it's about having realistic expectations. looking at it logically hoping for the best but understanding it may not work out as you want. if you can keep from being disappointed when your expectations aren't met then make them as high as you want.
