Description

Welcome to the Holderness Family Podcast! On Facebook and YouTube we are known as The Holderness Family. We make those silly songs and skits with our kids, but on this podcast, it's just us... the real us. The non-Christmas-jammies-us, the why-can't-my-socks-be-on-the-kitchen-counter-us (Penn) the why-do-I-have-to-go-outside-and-talk-to-people-us (Kim). On this podcast, we will share the real-life ups and downs of living together, working together, raising kids together, in what we hope is a funny and entertaining way. We will be taking questions that we are likely unqualified to answer (absolutely unqualified to answer) but we are hoping that the show will make all of your beautiful families realize you're not alone. You're not alone. We are all a hot mess... a HolderMess. The HolderMess: the Holderness Family PodcastThank you for subscribing and listening!Hosted by Kim & Penn HoldernessProduced by Max Trujillo

Penn here! This week, we recorded a live podcast at SXSW in Austin, Texas about how to (mostly) thrive with ADHD. We talk about how the world wasn’t built for ADHD and what systems I’ve put in place to make life more manageable. My hope is that we can find more understanding for those of us with different, but wonderful brains. If you have ADHD, how would you change your school or workplace to be more ADHD friendly? Big thanks to everyone who attended, we are so excited to get our new book out into the universe. We Were Loud Wrong

We Were Loud Wrong

Recently, we had the privilege of going on family vacation in the Caribbean and one of the activities we planned was snorkeling. He was particularly excited about seeing the “nerf shark.” (Yes, he said nerf shark instead of nurse shark.) Penn is very smart. He’s one of those annoying people who took the SAT and got an amazing score the first time. So, I cannot tell you how happy it made me that he thought a nurse shark was called a nerf shark. Easily my top moment on vacation. This story led us to talking about the other things we’ve gotten loud wrong in our lives this week on our podcast.Grab Our New Book, ADHD Is Awesome! We have very fun (but weird) jobs where we have to always be producing something. Small business owners know that you have to hustle in order to make a living. Your success (or failure) is a direct correlation of your work. And it’s a lot of pressure. This week on our podcast, we interviewed Celeste Headlee, author of Do Nothing: How To Break Away From Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving. I have to admit some of her advice about slowing down did not seem like it could work for small business owners like Penn and I. It was refreshing to hear even Celeste (who is self-employed) didn’t believe that slowing down could lead to the same, if not more success. Celeste gave us great advice to help me break my busy addiction. Do you have a hard time slowing down? Grab Our New Book, ADHD Is Awesome! I am pretty sure I didn’t do “gentle parenting” with my kids. To be clear, Penn and I don’t really have to discipline our children. They are wonderful kids and on their way to be amazing adults. But when they were toddlers having a tantrum, I can’t say that I was gentle. But should I be? Is it too late to change my parenting? Enter our dear friend, Dr. Hope Seidel, a parenting coach and pediatrician. When I posed this question to Dr. Hope, she responded: “Why do you think you need to change, Kim? Because a book told you so?” This is why I need Dr. Hope in my life and why I am so glad she joined our podcast discussion this week. She reminded us that it’s important to ask yourself: What am I hoping my kids will be, and am I creating a home that promotes that vision? There was a time when we’d have a reservation at a cozy restaurant to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Things are different now, but not “bad” different. I don’t love my husband any less. In fact, there’s no way I could love him more, but we are not in our date night era. So this week, our producer Ann Marie Taepke (she also plays our Midwest Neighbor in videos) joins us! When you've been together for a long time, it's hard to find new things to talk about. Ann Marie brought us 10 wacky questions to make us laugh and learn more about each other. Last week, we put out a fun video about Taylor Swift and the Super Bowl. It went viral and for the most part people loved it. But some of the comments got us talking enough to feel like we needed to do a podcast on it. Over the past couple months, Taylor Swift has received criticism for supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelce in his career. Some of the recent claims about her are misogynistic and awful. Would anyone say these things if an internationally famous male musician was supporting his female girlfriend? No. (In fact, he would probably be praised.)This week we unpack with our friend Carlos Whitaker. He’s a self-proclaimed “hope dealer” who has found a way to bring people together, people of different political parties, races, religions, to have really hard conversations. Carlos Whittaker is an author, speaker, and storyteller who is bringing hope to humans all over the world. What I love is his saying: "I don’t stand with issues, I walk with people." *This podcast talks about weight loss and issues surrounding body image* I love the sentiment around body positivity today. Models of all sizes cover magazines, and performers in larger bodies headline tours. But I don't know if I will ever get there. I grew up in the 90s where being thin was socially rewarded. It wasn't until I met Penn that I realized how you look doesn't have an impact on how you're loved or what you are capable of accomplishing.I talk more about this in a recent blog post, but it got me thinking... do I have to be body positive? Is body neutral an option? Enter expert Anne Poirier to talk to us about what it means to be body neutral and actionable ways we can give gratitude to these amazing bodies we have. I Need More In 2024

2024-01-0943:501

This year I am trying to worry less, and it’s a hard resolution to measure. But I have a theory about needing to do less of something: Adding more. If I try to do more, will I have time to worry? I wrote a blog post last week that kicked off this topic in our weekly podcast. Penn and I talk through what we want more of in 2024 (which Penn is super on board with for the sole reason that it rhymes. Thank goodness I didn’t think of this in 2025.) I asked a bunch of you want you wanted more of in 2024 and your answers did not disappoint.Have a question for us? I don’t buy lottery tickets. Not because I have moral opposition, but because I know I’ll never get this lucky ever again. Ten years ago, we won the internet lottery. We posted a video we titled, “XMAS JAMMIES” and it went viral. To be clear, we didn’t intend for millions of people to watch that video. It changed our lives forever (it's even how you're listening to this podcast now!)This week we talk about the lessons we've learned over the last 10 years. I wish I had better words to express our overwhelming gratitude for you, the person reading these words. We feel so lucky to be on this journey with you and we can’t wait to see where the next ten years take all of us. Check out our 10 Years Later video. Have a question for us? I have to admit, I roll my eyes when people tell me to slow down and enjoy things. When I first heard the phrase ‘Calm Christmas’ my mind heard the word lazy. There are so many obligations and traditions that are expected of us this time of year, how can you possibly slow down? This week we talked to Beth Kempton, author of Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year: A Little Book of Festive Joy, to help inspire calm in us this season. Calm can mean different things to different people. Beth encourages others to have conversations with yourself and your loved ones about what you want out of the holidays. Once you understand what everyone wants, you can be intentional about how to plan for them. You can learn more about Beth and her work here: https://dowhatyouloveforlife.com. Penn and I are no strangers to sports. We both enjoy playing recreationally, watching matches, and our kids are competitive too. There’s so much to admire about professional athletes. But what can we learn from them? This week we have world-renowned sports psychologist, Dr. Nicole Detling, on the podcast to talk about how to get our heads into a winning mindset.Dr. Nicole has consulted athletes for 25 years, including Olympic and Paralympic medalists, world champions, professional athletes in the PGA, MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL as well as professional rock climbers, road cyclists, mountain bikers, and water skiers. Professional athletes are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In Dr. Nicole’s experience, these individuals have higher levels of commitment and perseverance. We discuss how we can get in the zone in our everyday lives, as well as the pros and cons of youth sports. The Slow 60

The Slow 60

2023-11-1445:534

Last month, I announced my Slow 60 Challenge in an attempt to minimize anxiety and unnecessary stress in my life. Maybe you’ve probably heard of the “Hard 75 Challenge” - my Slow 60 is completely the opposite. This week on the podcast, I talk to Penn about my Slow 60 Challenge and how I am doing with it. While I haven’t been able to achieve my goals everyday, I don’t get too hung up if I slip. I make a promise to myself to try again tomorrow. In America, we live in a society that values busyness constantly. It’s led me to ask if it is even possible to live a slower life. Are you working full-time, raising kids full-time, and been able to discover the secret? I’d love to hear from you. Tell me how you “slow” :) Call 323-364-3929 or email us at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com.Play Our GameShop Our MerchGrab Our BookJoin Our NewsletterKim and Penn are online content creators known for their award-winning videos, including original music, song parodies, and comedy sketches. Their videos have resulted in over 2 billion views and 8 million followers across their social media platforms since they (accidentally) went viral in 2013. They have a best-selling book on marriage communication, a top-rated podcast, a fun-filled family card game, and most recently, they were the winners on Season 33 of The Amazing Race. The Holderness Family Podcast is edited and engineered by Max Trujillo of Trujillo Media and produced by Ann Marie Taepke, Sam Pressman, and Ashley Cimino.Follow us on YouTubeFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TikTok Follow us on Facebook Hosted on Acast. What Are You Afraid Of?

What Are You Afraid Of?

2023-10-3140:591

Kim and I have a phrase that we talk about in our marriage book: Name it to tame it. It’s the idea that when you say your fears out loud you take away some of its power over you. It was the inspiration for today’s podcast about naming what you are afraid of... without getting too heavy. I promise this is a fun podcast episode. We also call this exercise "naming the tarantula" - more on that in the pod. Another inspiration for today’s podcast was a recent video we did about Halloween costumes in the 80s. I have a fear of clowns and when we asked our followers for their throwback photos we realized: EVERYONE WAS A CLOWN. Whyyyy? What are you afraid of? Name your tarantula and tell us! In our society of overabundance, we are constantly craving more, more, more. For me, I can't stop scrolling. It’s like a slot machine, but in this case, the slot machine is my phone. You know you can get something of value, you know you’ll eventually get a reward if you keep trying, and oh boy can you play it over and over again. Luckily, we had Michael Easter on the podcast this week to talk about fixing our craving mindset and rewiring our habits. Michael Easter is the bestselling author of the books, The Comfort Crisis and Scarcity Brain: Fix Your Craving Mindset and Rewire Your Habits to Thrive with Enough. The politics thing is definitely from a place of privilege. For some it is terrifying.

This was so good and encouraging to listen to. My 6 yr old was diagnosed with ADHD. He is about to start kindergarten and my concerns are many. I have also realized that I have ADHD now that we are going through this with him. A lot of the things Inam seeing in him I recognize in myself. I get discouraged because I feel like because I went through similar things I should be able to parent him better. Do yall have parenting resource ideas on your website? Thanks and keep up the good work!

I love you kim. I totally understand what your saying. I have a great marriage and a healthy child, but I am allowed to have depression and anxiety. This episode helped me be so much.

minute 26 - Kim said, “the life of a college athlete is not one i would want” and Penn agreed. i couldn’t disagree more. i was a collegiate tennis player and it was the BEST experience. ive said that so many times to so many people.

Great stuff! I am divorced and wish I knew this years ago! My Ex and I still need to work together through joint custody. Do you guys ever have divorce experts on for those in my situation?

I agree with the virtual learning sentiment. it had Pros and it had Cons. We are definitely for technology. (my husband is a computer programmer.) But my 11yr old son became too dependent on the virtual interactions...partly because the kids on our street their families did not believe in COVID-19, and so they let their kids play with each other, no vaccinations, no precautions - nothing like that. My son stopped playing outside because he was being teased by the other boys, so his world became the online community, which at first was really great, but now I'm seeing that he's going to have a harder time adjusting back to in-person real world when he goes to middle school in the fall. We're going to try and do our best to help him transition back, but uggh!

My grandpa just died in his alzheimers care facility. They saw him declining and were going to let his wife take a covid test and come spend time with him one last time, hold his hand one last time(which was a huge blessing). While she was waiting for the results to come back he passed away in the night. She hasn't been with him since beginning of March. So heart breaking, this month is their 66 anniversary. I feel for you Penn, it's incredibly hard, and that was just my grandpa, I cant imagine it being my parents. Prayers of comfort for you all.

Love Penn's compromise! It was creative & respectful of what Kim wanted. Another idea: Let Penn pick the images w/o obligation to place or glue them down. Big fan of The Holderness Family @KimDHolderness - love your vids & podcasts! <3

This was good! My husband and I have a code word for Mommy Daddy time, and yes we schedule it! For sure, kids are not the #1 priority in our marriage. But every marriage is different, so you gotta find what works for you 💗

This was a super interesting podcast about analyzing dreams! My reoccurring dream is weird..... I dream that I'm going to the bathroom, usually in a public place, and the stall walls are so low that everyone can see me sitting on the toilet. This dream occurs sometimes every few months and sometimes it can be a few years before I dream it again. I think I first had it as a teenager; I'm in my 30's now. I've had the teeth falling out on and it always freaks me out! I dream about babies a lot too. Like last night, I dreamed that a friend I knew a long time ago was having a baby. I visited her and was about to tell her the my non-drugged delivery was excruciating but her dad cut me off and I changed my word to exhilarating. (what?!) Then I went to the nurses desk, picked up a tiny dark haired baby from off the counter and turned to walk to her room....and then I woke up. I never got to her room.
