After an exhausting year of politics and the re-election of Donald Trump, what is a faithful way for Christians to navigate the next four years? Should we continue to immerse ourselves in political news, or is it better to disconnect from the media? And should Christians join the political fights online, or unplug to better serve our local communities? The Holy Post crew responds to articles by a number of Christians leaders addressing these questions. Then, New Testament scholar, N.T. Wright, is back to discuss the book of Acts. Wright says an understanding of ancient temples is the key to the message of Acts. Also this week—the origin of F-words. Holy Post Plus Bonus Interview with N. T. It’s been a week since the election and why Americans voted to send Donald Trump back to the White House is beginning to come into focus. The entire Holy Post team—Phil, Skye, Kaitlyn, and Esau—is here to talk about why Trump won and how Harris lost. Was it the economy? Was it racism and misogyny? Was it identity politics or disinformation in the media? Everyone has a theory. Then New York Times columnist and Holy Post regular, David French, is back to give his take on the election. He explains why Kamala Harris’s decision to focus on abortion backfired, and why January 6 did not disqualify Trump for most Americans. 0:00 - Intro 1:21 - Theme Song 1:42 - Sponsor - Glorify - Sign up for the #1 Christian Daily Devotional App to help you stay focused on God. The 2024 election is finally here. Who won? We don’t know because we recorded this episode on Monday. But we do know that MAGA men are not happy about their wives secretly voting for Kamala Harris. And a new study finds trust in American institutions—especially the media—continues to decline. Is there a way to reverse the trend? Then, to take an overdue break from politics, Skye talks to author and illustrator, John Hendrix, about his new graphic non-fiction book “The Mythmakers” about the remarkable friendship between C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. It’s a fun conversation about faith, fantasy, and just a little bit of nerdiness. With only a week before the presidential election, Phil and Kaitlyn are joined by Mike Erre to discuss Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden. Why do so many white evangelicals ignore the racism, misogyny, and dehumanizing rhetoric coming from the MAGA movement? It is really about supporting certain policies or the idolatry of power? Then, David Swanson is back to discuss his latest book, “Plundered: The Tangled Roots of Racial and Environmental Injustice.” Swanson says we will be compelled to engage both issues when we see their shared origin in the sin of greed. Today’s episode is all content from our recent live event in Chicago. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss the rapid shift in public opinion about immigration—and it’s not just among Republicans. Why is support for immigration down dramatically among Democrats and independents too? Then Charlie Dates, the pastor of Progressive Baptist Church and Salem Baptist Church in Chicago, joins the show to talk about the widening divide between the black church and white evangelicalism, why he’s tired of talking about white evangelicals, and where he sees hope for the future of the church in the U.S. And Holy Post producer, Mike Stralow, challenges the hosts to a quiz show decathlon. Plus, Al Pacino says there’s no afterlife, and scientists discover strategically constipated tadpoles. The election is just three weeks away and Phil is exhausted, Kaitlyn is concerned that evangelicals supporting Harris are making the same mistake as those supporting Trump, and Skye blames the whole mess on WWJD bracelets. Based on Kaitlyn’s recent Religion News Service article, the Holy Post crew discuss a better way for Christians to think about politics and voting. Then, Wheaton College professor of theology and history, Jennifer Powell McNutt, talks to Skye about her new book, “The Mary We Forgot.” She argues that the Mary Magdalene we encounter in the Gospels is not a scandalized prostitute, but a significant supporter of Jesus’ ministry and “the apostle to the apostles.” Also this week—more useless fruit fly science. 0:00 - Intro 1:51 - Show Starts 4:54 - Theme Song 5:15 - The National Association of Evangelicals - Listen to the Difficult to explore how Christians can become peacemakers. Being a cultural Christian used to be an insult, but more people are embracing the label with pride. The Holy Post crew unpacks what’s behind the growing affection for cultural Christianity, and they explain why it’s more important than ever to embrace the weird, supernatural beliefs of the faith. Historian Kristen Kobes Du Mez is back to discuss her new documentary, “For Our Daughters,” about the sexual abuse scandals that have shaken the faith of many in the church. She sees a link between the theology and culture that created and covered-up sexual abuse in the church, and the rise of political idolatry within evangelicalism. Also this week—hurricanes are now political, and a Haitian pastor in New Hampshire with a sense of humor invites pets to his church. Steve Bezner, a pastor in Houston, had a troubling realization—his people were being shaped more by social media, YouTube, and cable news than by the Bible, and their views of money, sex, and power looked more American than Christian. He talks with Kaitlyn about his new book, “Your Jesus Is Too American,” and how being more relational than organizational may be the first step toward healing our churches. Also this week, are American evangelicals going through the five stages of grief? If so, what does it mean to accept our loss of cultural influence? For the first time, new data says Gen Z men are more religious than Gen Z women. Why are young women leaving the church and why are young men coming? In a military operation straight out of a spy novel, Israel infiltrated Hezbollah’s communication networks and detonated pager bombs and walkie talkies. David French and Skye discuss the operation and the long term ramifications. Then, they break down Pope Francis’ controversial comments on salvation that have sparked backlash among conservative Catholics. Finally, they unpack a surprising trend: why are young men returning to church in greater numbers than women? Is it a sign of hope for the church, or something more complicated? 0:00 - Theme Song 0:17 - Episode Starts, Update on Israel 13:19 - David French on the Pope Francis 18:50 - The Pope and Existential Humility 27:56 - Sponsor - Faithful Counseling - This episode is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. With both the election and polls getting closer, new research from Lifeway says a record number of pastors are refusing to say who they’re voting for—even on an anonymous survey. Mike Erre says he wouldn’t answer the survey either. His reason may surprise you. Phil explores how Pat Buchanan’s 1992 presidential campaign was a harbinger of today’s politics. And diversity experts featured in Matt Walsh’s new documentary claim he lied to get them to participate in the film. Walsh says it’s okay to lie for the greater good of winning the culture war. Is he right? Then, Kaitlyn interviews America’s Government Teacher and social media sensation, Sharon McMahon, about her new book “The Small and the Mighty.” McMahon says history can give us hope and resilience to live faithfully in our divided times. Since then the community, which was already facing significant challenges, has been shaken by deepening divisions, racism, and even bomb threats. We look at how church leaders in Springfield are responding, what’s really behind the pet-eating lie, and why some of Trump’s Christian supporters are embracing the demonstrably false story. Then, Skye talks with Robi Damelin, an 80-year-old peace activist he met during his recent trip to Israel. Robi’s son was killed by a Palestinian sniper in 2002, and since then she’s been partnering with grieving parents in both Israel and Palestine to advocate for peace despite growing resistance from leadership in both communities. Today’s show is all about perspective. First, Phil offers his perspective on the news stories fans send him on social media about Icelandic cucumbers and water buffalos, and how they compare to articles he actually likes about robotic mushrooms and avoiding gluteal amnesia. Then, a recent article explores our culture’s focus on products, practices, and apps designed to increase our happiness, and why focusing on happiness is a sure way to miss it. And Christine Emba’s latest article in The Atlantic looks at why government support and financial incentives have failed to reverse declining birthrates in many countries. She argues the decision to have children isn’t about money but meaning. Then Amy Low shares about her memoir “The Brave In-Between” and the perspective she’s gained by living with a terminal cancer diagnosis for five years. Plus, Skye and Mike Erre have different perspectives about holiday decorations. A very old trend is making a big comeback among Catholic women—veils. Is the turn toward head coverings rooted in Scripture, a desire for sacred symbols, a longing for traditional womanhood, or is it just a nostalgic fashion trend field by TikTok? A new study says what separates conservatives and liberals is how hierarchically they view the world and the importance of maintaining strict boundaries. And why are very conservative political personalities starting to talk more about Christian theology? Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn each offer their explanations. Then, Jemar Tisby is back to talk about his new book, “The Spirit of Justice,” and the remarkable stories of heroic, but largely forgotten, Christians in American history. For the first time in decades, the Republican Party has removed all pro-life language from the party platform. Trump has also called for less free-trade, more government regulation, and he is indifferent about Russian aggression in Europe. At the same time, the Democratic Party is embracing patriotism, law and order, tax cuts, and retreating from its more progressive social and environmental policies. What's happening? David French and Skye Jethani discuss the realignment of the parties and whether this is a permanent change or just temporary rhetoric. Also this week—Donald Trump has completely abandoned the pro-life movement, sending some conservative evangelicals into a political crisis. In the last two presidential elections about 8 in 10 evangelicals voted for Donald Trump, but can Kamala Harris steal some of those votes in 2024? We discuss the recent “Evangelicals for Harris” call and why it’s so difficult to get Christians to think more theologically about politics. Ed Stetzer argues that abortion should still be a top priority when voting, and Tyler Huckabee says we should be uncomfortable endorsing any candidate. Then, Skye talks to New Testament professor, Dr. Gary Burge, about the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and what the Bible really says about Israel’s claim on the Holy Land. 0:00 - Intro 1:30 - Show Starts and Kaitlyn’s Opinion on Vacations 4:53 - Theme Song 5:16 - Sponsor - Go to https://www.fromourplace.com and use code HOLYPOST to get 10% off site wide on beautiful cookware! 6:21 - Sponsor - Blueland - Get up to 15% off your first order by going to https://www.BlueBlueland.com/HOLYPOST 12:21 - Discussing the Evangelicals for Harris Call 21:08 - Jemar Tisby and Thick vs Thin Theology 29:03 - Ed Stetzer and the Umpire Analogy 33:30 - Which Party is Better for the Pro-Life Movement? 43:40 - Phil’s TwiXter on Watching Political Conventions as a Nonpartisan 48:14 - Sponsor - Faithful Counseling - This episode is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. Donald Trump made headlines last week when he questioned Kamala Harris’s racial identity. Phil, Skye, and Esau McCaulley discuss his comments and how the politics of division often cause us to categorize people into a single box. Then, should Christians embrace the spiritual uses of psychedelic drugs? Megan Basham's new book claims progressive powerbrokers have corrupted evangelical leaders with money, praise, and prestige, but many of her citations are being called into question. Which evangelical leaders are really being seduced by money? Perhaps Trump won because of Canada where we illustrated authoritarianism can also come from the left 🤔
do you read these comments?
Not enough discussion about new Marvel movies.
You're right Skye. Religion is America has flourished as long as it has, because it wasn't imposed. The current moves to force Christianity on people isn't working and it is even backfiring with the children of these people rejecting the faith if their parents.
I live in France and they were very offended by the Olympic Last Supper. There is some kind of government petition that thousands of French Christians are signing to let the government know this. Unlike the USA people in France who are religious are suppose to keep it private meaning hidden away. The government is suppose to be neutral about government, but there is an obvious bias against religious people especially Muslims. I'm glad that Christians world wide complained in support of Fr. Chris
Neumann brought up a topic that wasn't directly related to terrorism, but will have a major impact on the country if Trump is elected and that is loyalty. I have lived in countries where the number one criteria for working in the government is loyalty. As a result incompetent people are hired with a corresponding decrease in the ability of the government to work efficiently. I hope you and others can begin discussing this aspect of a Trump government. It will take years to fix after he is gone.
This cuts off mid sentence in the Cosper interview. Bummer that was the good part too.
We say that it's harder for kids born outside of marriage so we decide that the answer is having more kids born in marriage, but why don't we just look at how to make it less hard? It's just interesting how we decide what the answer is and then solely focus on that as an answer without ever looking beyond that, especially when it never brings an improvement.
Why is Gen Z leaving the church? They are school trained acolytes of post modernism. That is their religion.
This interview with Felicia Song was empty of any kind of information or content. They spent 15 minuites saying "Wow, teens live in a different world right now." My response is: Ummm, yes, correct, now what were you bringing to the table? oh nothing...
This podcast sounds like a bunch of retarded communist crap
England and Australia have no country boarders like we do. Sky’s argument about state lines also applies to country borders. Guns will come in from Canada and Mexico.
fantastic and challenging episode. The comment that Skye made about America has an autoimmune disorder stemming from our free speech was spot on.
excellent interview and discussion of where the church might focus its work in spiritual formation/discipleship and how to actually measure maturity and growth in disciples.
This was a great discussion on Biblical inerrancy vs people's interpretation of the inerrant Bible. I still have questions I wish I could have asked, but Skye and Dr. Bird cover some great gro7nd with logic and wisdom.
this is a fantastic episode! thank you all.
awesome episode :)
I'm a huge fan of the show, but I disagree with the take on Afghanistan. What is the goal of staying? If we stayed another year, 5 years, or 10 years would the outcome have been different or delayed? It's impossible to say with certainty; however, we've been there for 20 years and the Taliban took control immediately. This seems like an inevitable outcome, and that's tragic, but how were we supposed to stop it. Also, sure, only 66 Americans were killed in the past 7 years, but over 47,000 Afghan civilians have been killed during the war, many of those by the US. Only 51,000 Taliban have been killed. If our civilian casualties are as high as the casualties of our enemies, that's a problem. I support leaving Afghanistan because the US effort there has been wrought with errors and in the end nothing changed.
Sounds like there's very little that's practical from Francis on this topic when there's much more in Scripture that's not left in the abstract. I wish Francis would be more concrete without being simple.
You guys were hilarious today!! Phil: There's a peep store at MOA. Syke: I don't think that store is what you think it is. 🤣🤣🤣
