It's been a fun year here at HOD.  Thank you for listening!  Haseeb Qureshi was guest #1; so we thought we would invite him back on for another good back-and-forth.  That is what House of DelVento is all about.  THANK YOU for listening and supporting us through this podcasting journey.  Haseeb is one of many meaningful online connections I have made since starting the show.  Haseeb Qureshi is pursuing his PhD in embryology with further specialties in neuroscience and genetics.  He also has many other research areas and interests outside of his primary field. In this episode we talk new scientific innovations, future implications, ethics, sentience, culture, big questions, "pseudoscience", and more! *GUEST'S LINKS* Twitter: https://twitter.com/HQ_of_the_scope  Researchgate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Haseeb_Qureshi FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

Georgia Fort is a two-time Emmy nominated journalist.  Her mission as a storyteller is to change the narrative by amplifying truth, citing diverse sources, and contextualizing social justice issues.  In this discussion we touched on some of Georgia's experiences in the field, journalistic methods, biases, strategies for the future, and more!  This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Website: https://www.georgiafort.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ByGeorgiaFort/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/byGeorgiaFort Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/byGeorgiaFort/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@bygeorgiafort FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

After reading "Progress and Poverty" (1879) by Henry George, I came across a whole world in which this man actually has his own "ism".  Georgism.  Like Karl Marx, his writings and ideas have been codified and theorized by so many after him.  Unlike Marx, Henry George is much less well-known today.  Enter, Mark Mollineaux!  Mark hosts "The Henry George Program", a podcast exclusively related to Georgism, and Georgist applications to modern issues such as housing, inequality, taxation, etc.  Does Georgism stick? Let's see!  This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Podcast: http://seethecat.org/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/bufordsharkley FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

#16 - Odna Copty

2021-06-2301:12:25

I actually connected with Odna Copty through a conversation on the ClubHouse app.  She is a Palestinian film student based in Tel Aviv, with time spent outside of the country as well.  It is a true blessing and privilege to be able to host a platform for so many people and stories from across the world; but this one surely brought with it many emotions.  It's hard to put into words, as Odna's narrative is one I will never experience.  Living in and out of the Zionist machine.  Her unique perspective crosses gender, religions, politics, and so many internal / external narratives of trauma.  All of these inevitably lead us to focus our conversation on modern Israel/Palestine politics.  This is her reality, and perhaps this reality can help us better understand Israeli apartheid.  Big picture, little, where the US fits in, etc!  This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/odna_copty ClubHouse: https://www.clubhouse.com/@odnacopty FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

Lesley Williams is a member of the coordinating committee for the Jewish Voice for Peace in Chicago, and a founding member of Tzedek Chicago, a non-Zionist, pro social justice synagogue in Chicago.  Lesley has twice visited the West Bank with the Center for Jewish Nonviolence for solidarity work and resistance with Palestinian and Israeli peace activists.  She has also spoken on Islamophobia, antisemitism, and Zionism at the American Studies Association conference, the MAS-ICNA conference, and the American Muslims for Palestine conference.  We initially connected through the ClubHouse app, and spent the podcast discussing the US education system, lobbying groups, zionist definitions, critical race theory, antisemitism, and much more in this mildly meandering chat!  This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Twitter: https://twitter.com/lesleywilliams Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/crankylibrarian Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/crankylibrarian FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento
Tamara Johnson-Shealey is a Georgia native whose journey into politics began in 2011 as  a concerned citizen/business owner.  She placed 6th in a field of 21 during the highly publicized 2020 special election in Georgia; running primarily on a platform of reparations for descendants of slavery.  It was a pleasure to have her on as our first of many guests in an ongoing series about this very important policy.  What once may have seemed "out of reach" now has a direct path to the halls of congress!  This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Website: https://www.tamaraforgeorgia.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/tamarashealey Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TamaraForGeorgia Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/tamarashealey FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

We are interviewing the guy behind the graphics in this casual interview!  Elvis Salic has been doing my designs for almost a decade now, on dozens of projects.  His quality, work ethic, and dedication really set him apart; and it has been a real pleasure collaborating with him all these years.  His path as a freelancer is one many aspire to in these days of "internet money" and independent contracting.  In this chat we went over some of Elvis' early motivations, learning through internet, securing gigs, finding a "niche", specific projects, and more!  This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Website: https://www.elvissalic.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/elvissalic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elvis_salic FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

Rukiye Turdush is an ethnic Uyghur and researcher at the Uyghur Researcher Institute.  She has been vocal and outspoken in recent years against human rights abuses against the Uyghur community in China. This issue started trickling into global news a few years ago; but Rukiye's experience, and the plight of the Uyghurs goes much further back.  "East Turkestan", known officially as Xinjiang, is an autonomous region that actually predates the modern Chinese nation-state.  One side wants independence, another wants submission.  One side suffers (state-sponsored) atrocities, another denies them outright.  The world has heard this story before, sadly.  This was a prerecorded episode.  *GUEST'S LINKS* Twitter: https://twitter.com/parlabest Medium: https://medium.com/@rukiyeturdush FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

Ahmet T. Kuru (PhD, University of Washington) is a Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University. His recent book, "Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment: A Global and Historical Comparison" (2019) aims to offer a fresh perspective as to why Muslim-majority countries exhibit high levels of authoritarianism and low levels of socio-economic development in comparison to world averages.  Colonialism?  Religion?  War?  Most answers to this question have tended to see things from these lens; while Dr. Kuru pins it on what he calls an "ulema-state alliance".  The discussion centers on these main ideas from his book.  This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Website: https://politicalscience.sdsu.edu/people/faculty/kuru_a.html Twitter: https://twitter.com/prof_ahmetkuru FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento

Dr. Eviane Leidig is a postdoc on the INTERSECT (Intersecting Flows of Islamophobia) project, and an affiliate at the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) at the University of Oslo. Her current research compares the role of women in the far right in India and North America. She looks in particular at influencers on social media who promote Hindu nationalist and alt-right narratives, respectively, and the transnational connections between these movements. Our discussion centered around her paper "Hindutva as a Variant of Right Wing Extremism"; and recent occurrences of right wing radicalization in the US.  What does it all mean?  Dr. Leidig's research goes a long way at trying to put it all together!
