In this episode, I'm sharing a recording of an interview that I did for the podcast, "Tell Me A Story" a few weeks ago. Hosted by Sara and Ljubica, two young leaders in Serbia, this podcast seeks to use the art of storytelling to inspire others and incite change. I am so honored and humbled to have been featured by them and I enjoyed our conversation so much. We discuss identity, stereotypes, and the role of the media in society today. This is only the second half of our conversation together, so be sure to check out my previous episode to catch the first half! Welcome back to the Hybrid Podcast, everyone! We're back with IFYM for our first *zoom* podcast given the situation with COVID-19. In this virtual meeting, we spent time talking about how our respective faiths help us cope with the situation with COVID-19 and how religion can be an outlet during this very difficult time. Another outlet we discussed was art and media and how these influences play a role in religion from our personal experiences. This episode is a little on the longer side, but we hope you all take part in our discussions from wherever you may be listening! Note to listeners: This footage is raw for the most part and meant to highlight the candid nature of our conversations. A small warning, however, because it tends to get loud at times (especially with how much we tend to laugh) and there is food involved so you may hear part of that as well! Again, we hope you all enjoy it and learn even a little bit along the way. Among other events we do around the city, IFYM meets monthly and have really interesting discussions about religion, society, and growing up in the U.S through the lens of our perspective faiths and cultures. Follow us on Instagram @ifymiami Also, join the conversation! Email me at thehybridpodcast1@gmail.com or leave a voice message using the link in the Notes section below to include your input into the next episode. In the time of a pandemic impacting everyone in the global community, racism against the Asian community has spiked. While not a virus, racism against Asians has been spreading like one. Manifesting in many fields ranging from the fashion industry to food services, this blatant xenophobia has proven especially harmful. In this episode of The Hybrid Podcast, we explore America's history of attributing minorities to the cause of disease and how those same patterns are repeating themselves now. If you want to learn more and read some stories of how this has affected real people see: https://www.kut.org/post/spike-prejudice-asian-americans-dfw-face-racism-coronavirus-spreads https://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000007028034/racism-coronavirus-asians.html https://abcnews.go.com/US/backlash-asians-hinder-efforts-coronavirus-expert/story?id=69556008 Join the conversation! Welcome back to the Hybrid Podcast, everyone! We're back with IFYM for our first podcast after the new year. In our first meeting of the year, we spend a little time discussing our respective new years' traditions and our personal resolutions for the new year. We also learn a little more about the Islamic and Jewish new years, which are very different from the traditional new year! Note to listeners: This footage is raw for the most part and meant to highlight the candid nature of our conversations. A small warning, however, because it tends to get loud at times (especially with how much we tend to laugh) and there is food involved so you may hear part of that as well! Welcome back to the Hybrid Podcast! We're back with another discussion with IFYM. In this second half of our December meeting, we begin with a little history lesson into how religion has been a source for reforms and discussed conversion practices, and even brainstormed an idea for students to be able to pray at school! Note: This footage is raw for the most part and meant to highlight the candid nature of our conversations. A small warning, however, because it tends to get loud at times + there is food involved so you may hear part of that as well! Again, we hope you all enjoy it. Welcome back to the Hybrid Podcast! I am very excited to announce this next section of the podcast. In this series, I will be recording segments of InterFaith Youth Miami's meetings. IFYM is an incredible group working to reduce barriers among young people in Miami and foster connection and understanding at a time when our country desperately needs it. Among other events we do around the city, we meet monthly and have really interesting discussions about religion, society, and growing up in the U.S. Follow us on Instagram at: ifymiami In our December meeting, we began by talking about different faith traditions around the wintertime and the conversation took off from there! This footage is raw for the most part and meant to highlight the candid nature of our conversations. A small warning, however, because it tends to get loud at times + there is food involved so you may hear part of that as well! We hope you all enjoy. Our conversation lasted quite a while, so this is just the first half of our meeting's discussion. Be on the lookout for the next half! Join the conversation! With the hashtag #CLOSETHECAMPS trending recently, I found it imperative to record an episode on the Uyghur Crisis occurring right now in northwest China. In this episode, we learn more about who the Uyghurs are, what is going on in their native region of Xinjiang, and most importantly, how we can help in this crisis. For the past few years, the Uyghur Islamic minority of China has been the subject to a plethora of human rights abuses and systematic discrimination by the Chinese government. Through torture, extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, and violations of religious beliefs and practices, the Uyghurs have witnessed a complete loss of their way of life. International leaders have done little to nothing to prevent these horrific abuses and this crisis has also failed to be a focal point of coverage by international news outlets. They have become current victims of destructive and repressive policies which the Chinese government continually denies and thus, it is ever important to do all we can to shed light on what is happening and be agents of change in ending these atrocities. As we delve into this topic, I invite you to do more research on these people and their plight. Here are links to a few articles which might be helpful in this way: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-45474279 https://www.vox.com/2018/8/15/17684226/uighur-china-camps-united-nations https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/chinas-crackdown-uighurs-xinjiang Here is a link to a template you can use to contact your representatives in government: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dNKJNtn0mZ3Q-4LxuFWzyGrj9LtHjPqby8BPrVJcOF0/edit?usp=sharing Also, Happy International Podcast Day! In this episode, we take a closer look into the life of the unique Third Culture Kid. Who are TCKs? What makes up their three-part culture? Prior to recent decades, TCKs were an exception in mainstream society, but as globalization advances exponentially and the world grows and grows, TCKs are becoming the norm in society. Their distinctive situation puts them in a position where they have, oftentimes, an expanded worldview and a higher cultural competence. However, there can be negative social implications to being a TCK too, especially with regards to exclusion and inclusion among groups of people. As we explore this topic on a deeper level throughout this episode, I invite you to take an intrinsic look into your own identity and cultural upbringing. How was this identity shaped your interactions with people who share this identity? How about with those who don't share it? Join the conversation! In this episode, we delve deeper into questions of American multiculturalism, specifically the conflicting "melting pot" and "salad bowl" cultural ideas. From the 1780s until now, the idea of what American culture is composed of has been highly debated and is ever changing. Join me as we explore these two ideas and their impact on American people and our nation as a whole. What does it mean to fit into "American culture"? How has our view of American society affected minorities and changed what it means to be a citizen of this country? Join the conversation! Email me at: thehybridpodcast1@gmail.com
Hey all! My name is Aisha Chebbi and welcome to the Hybrid Podcast! This first episode is pretty short and meant to serve as an Introduction as to what this show is about and what I hope to accomplish throughout the later episodes. I hope you'll stick around as we delve into learning more about identity, culture, and how we can actively create a more inclusive and understanding world.
