Nowadays, a lot of students seem to want to move away from the East after the graduate, as the West supposedly would have more to offer. Though, is this assumption fair? Enschede houses a lot of innovative, very student friendly engineering companies, of which Dynteq is one of the best examples. In this episode we talk with Rob Lenferink, who founded Dynteq with two of his friends after they developed their plan during and after a school assignment. How did all of this come to be, what is the company involved in now and how can an engineering student prepare themselves for Dynteq (or another engineering company)? Find out here and now! As our committee consists entirely of students, every now and then comes a time that some of our members graduate, or find another path in life, and therefore move on from the university and our committee. Currently we have arrived at one of these points, which means that we will have to take some time to find some fresh recruits for our podcast. At the same time, the recording studio is going into a renovation, which prevents us from using it. Though, as we need some time to extend our member count anyway, this will probably not limit us all that much.We hope you are looking forward to our return, and to meet some new faces in the future! On insta we share our journey to find out how broad our horizon as Industrial Design Engineers can be: @the_icarus_idea (always open for DM’s) Content: 00:00 Intro 01:57 How does Dynteq, Rob’s company, operate and what do they get involved with?12:20 The origin and development of the Fulpra cargo bike, and an insight into various other projects of Dynteq23:31 Rob’s view on the future of product design and development and Dynteq’s role within that future29:12 Rob’s advice
Who doesn't love boardgames and toys? Exactly noone, but games and toys are also products which should be designed so that's why we are talking to Kasper Schriek this episode. He started in the summer of 2018 with his new job at Goliath and already worked on numerous products, his favorite is Reaxion, a mix between LEGO and Domino, but how does that work and what should you keep in mind designing this? Learn this and more in the latest episode of the Icarus Idea. Hope you enjoy! XXX the icarus idea Some interesting things: Reaxion: https://nl.goliath.services/product-categorie/reaxion/
What do you do if you got asked to design a thing you have never heard of? Will you back out or will you grab it with both hands and start getting busy? Jeroen van Erp did the last thing when someone asked him to design a website in the early 90's. And that website was the start of Fabrique, a strategic design agency that has created the sites and platforms for IKEA, Lowlands, Rijksmuseum and many more.    Besides that Jeroen is an author, one of the books he wrote is "think like a designer, don't act like one' a book you should defenitely check out. But how does a designer think, that's what we try to find out in this episode.   What do you think is necessary to think like a designer? Let us know in the comments.    XXX- The icarus idea Worth checking out: https://www.fabrique.nl/ https://lowlands.nl/ https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/f/think-like-a-designer-don-t-act-like-one/9200000081031975/ https://www.fabrique.com/blog/2021/12/hack-system/
We're back with another episode and this time with someone that isn't technically a designer at the moment but we thought she was so cool so we should interview her.    She started outworking at Philips and later working for Philips as a freelance designer. She desigined a lot of things like coffeemakers, shavers for which she even won an award.    However around 2005 she became an artist, making beautiful paintings. So why the switch? And can your job as a designer influence your work as an artist (or vice versa). Find out in this episode.   Let us know what you learned on instagram or send us an mail at icarus.podcast@gmail.com   XXX - theboisandgurls   Check out Saskia's work at:  http://www.saskiadingelstad.com/
Welcome back! As industrial designers it is our goal to come up with new innovating ideas in a wide range of fields and this is something that we can do well. But what do you do after you come up with an idea, do you develop it yourself and go through the whole process of production, selling, starting a business? What if you don't want to do that, what else can you do with your product?  This month we talked to Rudo who is a designer in multiple fields such as yachts, board sports, guitars and much more, some ideas he actually developed into a product but some ideas he just sold as an idea. But what are the benefits to this? And what are some things you should look after once you've sold your idea. Find out in this episode! Hope you enjoy! xxx-The icarus idea Check out Rudo Enserink at: https://www.enserinkdesign.com/ What lesson did you take out from this episode?  Let us know!  Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy!   @the_icarus_idea
When you say Eindhoven, you say Dutch Design Week (and PSV and philips, but let's not focus on that right now). Luckily we were already in Eindhoven interviewing Coen van Ham the 19th of october so the four of us (Rowen, Maede, Anna & Bram) headed out to the different buildings with our equipment and tried to interview some cool designers about their projects. For this episode we've selected four designers with completely different projects.  Have a listen to it and get some inspiration.  First fragment: Designer: Katie Pelkian Baselj with her project: Landscape Lab https://ddw.nl/en/programme/6360/landscape-lab Second fragment:  Maastricht Institute of Arts representing Max Dekker with his project: Nothing will save the world https://ddw.nl/en/programme/5925/the-class-of-2021-exhibition-klokgebouw Third fragment:  Naomi van Straalen with her project: Maatje https://maatje.ndri.es/ Last fragment: James Grünfeld with his project: Visual Noise https://ddw.nl/en/programme/6020/graduation-show-2021
New year, new season! The icarus idea is back to bring you the best advise from actual working designers. We started with two new hosts Maede and Rowen who are going to interview an industrial designer every month and talk about their work and projects and how they got there. We start off with someone that has done it all, from working at the television to creating art, to designing and most intrestingly an identity coach. So what does that mean and how can it be implemented with design. Find out in the coming 30 minutes!  Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy! @the_icarus_idea
This is the end! Multiple endings to be exact, first of all the end of season 2 but it's also the end for Joris and Bram as hosts. So the perfect moment to reflect on last two seasons and to get to know everyone of the icarus idea.  In four segments you'll get to know all the active members of the icarus idea. What do they do, some random facts but also what they have learned when working on the podcast. Hope you enjoy listening! There was more to talk about than we could fit in one episode. So here is part two! Who did Daan look up to when he was a student? How can you and I proactively create this Protopia? What if I want to run my own studio? What if I don’t? Also, Russian literature, Greek philosophy and chairs. All in one episode. We hope you enjoy our conversation, we sure did! We did not expect Daan to have time for two students that just want to learn from him. All the more thrilled were we when we got to hear that he found an hour in his schedule. We got the opportunity to casually sit down with him and discuss things like: “What was Daan Roosegaarde like as a student?” “Why is being a voluntary prisoner of your own idea good for the future?” and “Do fishes survive being flushed down the toilet?”. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode half as much, as we enjoyed recording it. Let us know what you think! Have a great holiday season and we’ll see you in 2021.
